The Holdovers
A curmudgeonly instructor at a New England prep school is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually, he forms an unlikely bond with one of them — a damaged, brainy troublemaker — and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam. From TMDB

Alexander Payne truly did achieve his goal of making a movie that seemed to be OF the era rather than merely about the era. It’s a real movie. It takes its time. It lets you marinate in the moments. Great close-ups throughout.
positive · AI labelView post →Just watched The Holdovers. Remarkable movie, and really captures the spirit of other early 70s films.
positive · AI labelView post →Didn't have time to watch The Holdovers before Christmas but the good news is it's also a New Year's movie! I've got time and so do you!
neutral · AI labelView post →“The Holdovers” is a great, under-appreciated Christmas film — and it solidifies Giamatti as one of our finest screen actors. 💕 (Payne, 2023)
neutral · AI labelView post →Now watched the Holdovers twice and, as my friend John Mitchinson said to me last night, it is surely destined to become a Christmas classic. A warm-hearted and beautiful film and boy do we need more of that in our world.
positive · AI labelView post →Let me continue my long tradition of being the last to know something and tell you that The Holdovers is a beautiful film.
positive · AI labelView post →I am not a Bourdain cultist and I don't have a lot of patience for macho-but-hurting-inside chef drama. But I just saw the movie Tony and thought it was very strong and well-made. I was esp. impressed by Dominic Sessa; his remarkable debut in The Holdovers was not a fluke. (Bonus: Ptown locations!)
neutral · AI labelView post →My favourite Movie of 2023. THE HOLDOVERS (2023) Do check it out if you haven’t yet, it’s entirely wonderful. Paul Giamatti Dominc Sessa Da'Vine Joy Randolph Alexander Payne

neutral · AI labelView post →Just watched The Holdovers and it's such a perfect little old-school indie movie for the holidays. Paul Giamotti is a treasure. 📽 Filmsky

neutral · AI labelView post →Just watched The Holdovers for the first time. A beautiful little film. Lovely performances. Very moving.
positive · AI labelView post →As it wasn't released in time for Christmas in the UK, a reminder that The Holdovers is a bloody brilliant Christmas film.
positive · AI labelView post →It's only a year old, but I know The Holdovers will be an every year Christmas movie watch. Masterpiece. Paul Giamatti is incredible. And don't ever believe movies today need to look like trash. It's a policy choice.
positive · AI labelView post →THE HOLDOVERS is on Peacock. Strong recommend. Giamatti on god mode. Really all 3 leads on god mode. Polytheistic movie
positive · AI labelView post →I was a "good, not great" person on The Holdovers a couple years ago, but I rewatched it on a whim yesterday and liked it much more. It might be a movie that improves with multiple watches. I still wish it didn't spell EVERYTHING out in dialogue, but at Christmas, we pull the subtext into the text!
neutral · AI labelView post →The Holdovers (2023), my favourite movie of 2023 and my recommendation for you all to watch over Christmas.. I remember I went in to this blind when it was released because of a radio appearances by Paul Giamatti and some fascinating stories he told. It is a lot more thoughtful than the "Christmas comedy" tag would suggest and is full of amazing characters. I'd welcome any recommendations from the community too if you have any favourite festive movies.
positive · AI labelView post →The Holdovers: what a lovely, lovely movie. The kind you want to live in a while, even though it’s about three sad people stuck together in what seems at first like a miserable experience. Giamatti, Randolph, and Dominic Sessa are all fantastic.
positive · AI labelView post →The Holdovers: Well that was a melancholic delight. Keep following me for more bang up to date movie reviews.

I guarantee fantastic results with the following choices - FORD V FERRARI (Hulu): tipsy Boomers go absolutely apeshit for this one - THE HOLDOVERS (Prime): duh - WILD ROSE (Tubi or rent iTunes/Amazon): has never failed me ever
neutral · AI labelView post →Watching The Holdovers for the first time. The movie has Paul Giamatti (Starfleet Academy) and Gillian Vigman (Lower Decks' Dr. T'ana). As per Star Trek headcanon rules, this movie can be considered a holodeck program.
neutral · AI labelView post →(Belated film watch) The Holdovers (2023): as if Wes Anderson had directed one of the sadder John Irving novels. This is a big compliment.
positive · AI labelView post →I watched The Holdovers with my daughter last night (she’s 20) and she really enjoyed it. 😊 I love introducing her to movies that I know she’d never watch otherwise. When she loves them, it just gives me the warm fuzzies. Also, I love that film so much.
positive · AI labelView post →I thank god and Alexander Payne every day for The Holdovers, for no other movie has encapsulated the vibe of New England during the holidays so well. The RICHNESS the tones the everything
positive · AI labelView post →This line from The Holdovers (great movie) still lives rent free in my head. bsky.app/profile/popp...
neutral · AI labelView post →The Holdovers is a sweet and funny movie I thought was perfect for the holidays. No way did it feel like it was two-plus hours, so well-paced, too. Excellent script plus acting.
positive · AI labelView post →The Holdovers is a great *this is what the Humanities is about* Christmas film.

There has been recent news that several critically acclaimed, award nominated movies will not be getting a 4K Blu-ray release, or even any type of physical release in some cases. But, there are also instances where movies being decimated by critics and audiences alike are somehow getting the 4K Blu-ray treatment. > > Take, for instance, All…

unlabelledView post →Everyone should watch Alexander Payne's wonderful film, "The Holdovers," and his most recent film before that, "Downsizing," for a truly terrible double feature that makes no sense. Worst idea I can think of, you should do it
