The Hitcher
On a stormy night, young Jim, who transports a luxury car from Chicago to California to deliver it to its owner, feeling tired and sleepy, picks up a mysterious hitchhiker, who has appeared out of nowhere, thinking that a good conversation will help him not to fall asleep. He will have enough time to deeply regret such an unmeditated decision. From TMDB

Thomas Howell and Jennifer Jason Leigh, it quickly became a cult classic! 📽️ WATCH: youtu.be/AaU8vhDsqtM?si=iB4vSiTDsHqgwIlM #Horror
unlabelledView post →The Hitcher isn’t a great film by conventional measures. But what makes it worth watching is Rutger Hauer. Who takes a seemingly simple killer off the page and makes him layered, terrifying, and fascinating to watch. His microexpressions, the way he delivers lines steeped in subtext. Perfect. 💯

John Ryder was more terrifying to me than Freddy Krueger as a kid & the film still feels like a cinematic powder keg: from-the-desk-of-the-horror-chick.ghost.io/summer-of-mo... Rutger Hauer and crispy action; four out of five. film-authority.com/2026/04/08/t...
unlabelledView post →So underrated. Genuinely so beautifully shot. Rutger Hauer's performance is so good. One of the best serial killer movies ever. I need people to stop asking me for movie recs and just watch this. #filmsky My ★★★★★ review of The Hitcher on @letterboxd: boxd.it/bC5yBZ

unlabelledView post →The Hitcher is peak Rutger. And the film is brilliant. The question is never: How does Jim stop John while saving everyone else there? Everyone else there is already dead. The question is: Does Jim have the guts to accept that and still stop John so that John doesn’t go on to kill even more people?
unlabelledView post →I've published 3x single-film focused monographs of 30k words each since 2015 (on Dario Argento's Suspiria, Robert Harmon's The Hitcher, and Abel Ferrara's Ms. 45), and it's the perfect size for a project like that. The BFI single-film monographs established this as film crit norm, we're lucky!
unlabelledView post →Currently watching The Hitcher (1986) and I keep going nuts for how all the car chases are shot, like the use of multiple planes of action to convey distance between persuer and persued is incredible and wouldn't you know the guy who shot this also shot a little chase film called mad max fury road

unlabelledView post →Picking a random film from my collection to show off for no real reason! Day #65 "The Hitcher" (Robert Harmon/1986) White knuckle tension and Rutger Hauer as one hell of a scary serial killer in this incredible road film/horror movie. I can't say enough great things about this film, recommended!
unlabelledView post →Currently watching The Hitcher! This one is *intense*!
unlabelledView post →Just watched THE HITCHER, which I haven’t seen since the days of the video rental shop in the 80s. It’s a great film. The tension starts in the first few minutes & just keeps on escalating. And Rutger Hauer is wonderfully demented. Nice exploding helicopter too: @chopperfireball.bsky.social!

unlabelledView post →They don't make flicks like this anymore. Exceedingly grim, nasty as a toothache, COHEN AND TATE is one traumatizing, pulverizing thriller. Prior to making the movie, Eric Red wrote THE HITCHER (1986) and NEAR DARK (1987), and the three films form a trilogy of 1980s nihilistic cinema at its finest.

unlabelledView post →THE HITCHER is a movie is saw very young. I remember watching it when I was probably 9 or 10 with my older brother during and HBO free preview weekend. I remember being shocked with how bleak it was. Rutger Hauer really elevates the whole movie with an insane performance.
unlabelledView post →Have you ever seen The Hitcher? My favorite Rutger Hauer movie.
unlabelledView post →On this day, 40 years ago, Robert Harmon's "The Hitcher" (1986) had its limited release in the USA. Solid horror movie, with a memorable performance by Rutger Hauer as the baddie. Jennifer Jason Leigh was also amazing! #OTD #FilmSky #TheHitcher
unlabelledView post →I saw THE HITCHER at a young age and the movie really got its hooks into me, but as time goes by it's become sorta unsatisfying. The villain isn't tailored to the hero. He's just a random event. By contrast, consider the Twilight Zone's "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet." The gremlin is the perfect foe.
