Score: ◆◆◆⬖◇ (3.5/5) TLDR: Funny, charming RPG with good writing and clever parody moments, but held back by uneven systems and often frustrating, RNG-heavy combat. Worth a look on sale, preferably on a lower difficulty. If there was ever a game that I’ve come away from with a love-hate relationship in recent years, DONAC (zero chance I’m spelling out the entire name every time I mention it) would fit the bill. This game has pretty great potential and it even occasionally reaches it, but…

The random elements of the game are bad, the sheer amount of luck you need is way too high. Swing and miss seem to be the norm, and when you think your power abilities will be there to help; it won't, but only waste up your turn.

The more I think about this game, the less I like it. I want to be clear here, I wish I could like this game, the writing is good enough to tempt me to keep going in spite of how bad the actual game part is. But the actual game part is so bad. The common thread in other negative reviews is that the RNG feels unfairly biased against you, and I'd have to agree. I've seen review replies and forum posts saying that's the point because it's supposed to be funny and on theme with the original…

The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk (DoN) is a tongue-in-cheek attempt at a dungeon-crawling RPG. Full of weird humor poking fun at RPG tropes, tactical battles, a story that goes in multiple directions, distinct classes and colorful graphics; this game should appeal to most fans of the genre. There are two make-or-break characteristics of the game: 1. Let's start with what makes DoN distinct and that's the humor. This is not a serious game. The humor doesn't always work but…

I feel a bit rude writing "it's not bad, but I still don't recommend it" but that's where I'm at. I thought the game was just "fine", but nothing specific stood out to make me want to commit to playing through it instead of dropping it and playing something better-than-just-fine - particularly given it's toward the longer side of things. I will briefly note that the combat often felt a bit too puzzle-y (where there's disctintly right/wrong approaches to combat that can make the same fights…

At first glance, The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos is a fun and quirky game. Its early hours offer lighthearted humor and entertaining moments, but the experience quickly turns repetitive and monotonous. Core mechanics are either underdeveloped or barely used, surfacing only once or twice in a campaign that can stretch to around 30 hours. Combat, while initially engaging, soon suffers from repetition. After the third or fourth chapter, battles rely less on strategic depth and more…

I don't usually write reviews, but for this one I'll make an exception. This game is an absolute master piece. So much fun and humor and RPG in one game - you don't often stumble upon. The game is all about tactics and honestly I don't even mind, if my characters made a mistake, because it's again so much fun just to listen and watch them fail - you don't usually 'enjoy' this part in standard games. I think I didn't even use the load button, because you don't have to. Sometime you just want to…

There is a strange charm in well done parodies that are also consistent in themselves. They are rare, hard to pull off, and most of them just aim for giggles rather than a fleshed out experience. To see games like this one, with gloriously long titles, is an overall pleasant experience in this regard. If a fun dungeon adventure with all the known D&D tropes sounds fun, this is the game for you. Watch out though, fleshed out and consistent as it is, it still has horrendous RNG and a good amount…

So far I’ve spent 30+ hours wandering through The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk. It’s been a real delight. It’s funny, strangely enchanting, and you actually start to like the characters. The art is vibrant, the story is fun, and even the side missions feel alive with that chaotic good energy. It’s made with a sense that the characters are self-aware and it comes up frequently. I made The Elf my Steam background. She may be a walking blonde joke cliche, but she is probably the kindest and most…

Any positive or good qualities this game may possess don't matter when every combat encounter devolves into watching your heroes miss every single attack turn after turn. The comedic incompetence of the characters doesn't work as a basis for a game that has a tactical turn-based combat system at its core. Why am I punished for trying to play this ?

I played through it twice, once on release and recently. All in all this is just a genuine good game. It's not perfect by any means, i'd say it's even quite bad in some aspects (navigating around the dungeon, which is like, half the game, is quite tedious; you can easily miss some sidequests if you don't use a guide; and the sound effects are sometimes very annoying, especially the eating sounds in tavern areas (this is somehow worse in the DLC, i don't know if i have misophonia or anything but…

Generic dungeon crawler with some attempts at humour that often had me wince instead of laugh. The tactical gameplay seems passable and a bit fun. The game is held back by camera controls being locked on the party making traversing any map a chore instead of fun. It's not a terrible game but also not worth spending your money or time on.

I wanted to like this game but there were certain aspects about the combat that just felt horrible. Like having a 140% chance to land a hit and it gets dodged... and I understand the game has a built-in system to combat bad luck by giving a charge meter with different abilities available based on bad luck. But it did not make up for the frustration that came with it. Game overall left me unfulfilled and upset, and that's not what I want in a game.

Honestly, despite being the usual Critical Roll "turned my D&D stream into a video game" slop, it actually had some potential, I mean good writing is good writing, even if it's mainstream. Sadly, the spoken dialogue - THE primary reason to play the game - is executed terribly. Most of the voice acting would be solid, but there was no effort or care taken for direction. The tones of the characters often mis-match the conversation or the scenario. The actors clearly recorded all their lines…

Dungeon of Naheulbeuk is not at funny as it thinks it is. I did chuckle at times but its not a laugh riot unless you think a Barbarian talking about foot odor and a Dwarf swearing at everybody is hilarious. Luckily it makes up for it by being an excellent turn based strategy game. I really enjoyed how unique each character felt and how the team support and cover options worked very well. The battles tended to add twists to keep things from getting too samey too! If you enjoy turn based…

Fun dialog, well-architected storyline, very self-aware and sarcastic about RPG design. Definitely worth whatever I paid for it in some bundle and then some. Hours played was a lot of background idling, could probably finish the main storyline in ~10h and another ~10-15 for the side quests in the base game. Kudos to the devs for an incredibly polished and enjoyable experience!

This is really a middle of the road game (wish Steam had a "maybe" rating). If you like turn based rpgs with a LOT of loot and exploration and can put up with REALLY bad writing and voice acting, then sure, go for it. But if story and dialog mean a lot to you (as they do me), this is going to be painful. The writing seems like it was done by teen boys, and 3/4 of the voice acting is just bad. I thought it was going to be funny from the trailer, but it all makes me just roll my eyes and want…

Dungeon of Naheulbeuk, as a concept, was created in 2000 as a webseries-type thing. Back when making jokes about Tabletop Games' culture and tropes was niche, and seen as groundbreaking if there was decent equipment. A lot has changed since then. The humour if this game is a time capsule. Some things are best left remembered fondly rather than being confronted with what it actually was like. On a technical note, it was annoying as hell when you would stop moving to check something, but then…

This must be one of the most infuriating games I've ever played. Early on, everything was fine, but now I'm at a point in game where enemies deal HUGE amounts of damage( single target and AOE ), they outnumber your team, summon even more enemies, debuff you like crazy with grenades and spells and have an insane dodge chance. I feel like the game is balanced in favor of the enemies all the time so I can't bring myself to continue through this slog of a game. And I'm so dissapointed, because…

Arcadey turn-based tactics with a fairly no BS learning curve or mechanical difficulty to it (I'm looking at you, Gloomhaven). A solid TRPG addition to any library and great "pick up and just play" title where you don't need to worry about character creation sheets with stat sheets, creation decisions you'll regret, or min-max metas (at least on normal difficulty). TLDR: Buy it on sale, and temper your expectations. It's clear a lot of effort and love went into it, but the game is very average. I got the game relatively cheaply in a HumbleBundle bundle. $35 is an insane price, especially considering the game's age. Navigating the game world/ combat wasn't terribly engaging or fun. The game idea is fun, the realization has a lot of pros, but there are 2 factor that I can't really stand: 1st thing the game is completely unbalanced: you can stumble upon battles that just can't be won if you don't follow the story step by step grinding every single xp to reach the point. Second point it is too highly relying on luck. critical hit and critical fail occours very often on both side. There's no ESRB rating, which isn't unheard of but makes it extremely difficult to find details on what kinds of "mature content" are in the game. While the story is fun and interesting, the combat is beyond tedious. It's bad enough that it is turn based, but it is incredibly slow most of the times as well, especially when you are grossly outnumbered. Expect on average to spend about 1/2 hour per combat encounter (assuming you win), with most of that time waiting for your opponents to make there moves (many of which are attacks designed to make your characters lose a turn). There are mechanics like critical failure rolls to make the game more challenging but this is just lazy and annoying.
