Stillwater
Bill Baker, an American oil-rig roughneck from Oklahoma, travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter, Allison, who is in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit. Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences, and a complicated legal system, Bill builds a new life for himself in France as he makes it his personal mission to exonerate his daughter. It was during an April snowstorm. Still remember the eating the banana scene. Might have to watch this bad movie again just for old time's sake.

unlabelledView post →The band Stillwater in the film ‘Almost Famous’ is so plausible that they could just have Peter Frampton write a few songs for them and we believe that of course they have fans who also catch Led Zeppelin on tour. But if Bowie & Iggy not exist, ‘Velvet Goldmine’ would not fly.
unlabelledView post →Stillwater isn’t supposed to be that good, which helps it work. “Fever Dog” could be on the radio in the 1970s. But if the movie tried to say Stillwater was the next Led Zeppelin, the audience wouldn’t buy it.

A widower from Oklahoma travels to Marseille to see his daughter who's in prison & tries to help her get out. He ends up staying for months & gets into some trouble. Brilliantly done & you can smell Marseille, it's very real.

unlabelledView post →The thing I've never quite gotten abt that movie is that it's based on Crowe's early life, and the specific band most similar to Stillwater was The Allman Bros—but Stillwater isn't supposed to be remotely that good or successful. He didn't hang w/ mediocrities IRL, so why in the movie?
