Shoplifters
In the outskirts of Tokyo, a poor but close-knit group living on the fringes of society survives through shoplifting and odd jobs. When Osamu and his son take in a neglected young girl, their already fragile existence begins to unravel. As the family grows attached to her, buried secrets surface, forcing them to confront the true meaning of love, belonging, and what makes a family. From TMDB

It's set in 1979 and it's about four sisters who are all dealing with infidelity... #kdrama #asiandrama

unlabelledView post →Having watched GODZILLA MINUS ONE and rewatched SHOPLIFTERS and MONSTER last weekend at the Japanese Film Fest, I think Sakura Andô might be our subtlest interpreter of ambivalent, besieged, perseverant relationships to motherhood. She's painting with colors no one else has. 📽️
unlabelledView post →The best films and shows usually challenge worldviews by poking holes in them, only to find ways for the audience themselves to then reinforce their worldview through basic human empathy. Kore’eda’s “SHOPLIFTERS” is an absolute masterpiece of an example of this. A magicians trick of a film

By far the best lineup yet for the mini Japanese Film Festivals happening the last few years, including SHOPLIFTERS, MONSTER, & AKIRA. #desiwatch 📽️

No ajd, nakon toga njegov zadnji, Monster, koji je isto odličan. Šteta što nije upao nijedan od starijih, jer je komotno mogla bit večer remek-djela.

It's rare that I enjoy a movie that's mostly drama the way this is, but always love it when it happens. #filmsky

unlabelledView post →The reason this drama isn’t for everyone, aside from its slow pace, is that the realism of the story undercuts any fairytale ending. The humanism & warmth of the #Shoplifters family is offset by the imperfect interests pulling at the character’s lives. Yet it is an understatedly beautiful film.
unlabelledView post →Shoplifters (2018) Director: Hirokazu Koreeda I was very surprised by Shoplifters. I spent years avoiding spoilers but this was not what I was expecting. Surprises throughout and very good.

unlabelledView post →Film wise I love everything Hamaguchi has done. Kore-eda my favourites are After Life, Maborosi and Shoplifters. Kurosawa - Ran & Kagemusha. I also love the 60’s films Oninaba and Kwaidan. Not sure what any of these titles are in Japan. All the best.
unlabelledView post →Saw 'Perfect Days' by Wim Wenders, lovely film, Kōji Yakusho is amazing. Kind of interesting to think about it alonside Kore-eda's 'Shoplifters', a possibly inferior film but one that takes its politics seriously; Wenders crafts a really carefully depoliticised experience of (self-)marginalisation.
unlabelledView post →I watched two great films yesterday. Both Japanese. One was called "The Shoplifters".... a 2018 award winning film. The other was a 1953 movie called "Tokyo Story". Highly recommend both of them.
unlabelledView post →I believe that I might like Hirokazu Kore-eda’s ‘Shoplifters’ more than that other ‘disfunctional family’ film ‘Parasites’ They have a few similarities, but the ‘Tokyo Godfathers’ aspect of ‘Shoplifters’ and the cute as a button rescued kid is enjoyable. It does end on a sad note, though Recommended

This hurt my heart but honestly this movie is lovely. Many of the shots are so nicely composed and the camera doesn't move so much, so it gives it a beautiful quality :)

unlabelledView post →So far the best show I’ve seen on TV this year has been Netflix’s Asura. 🎥 It’s a wonderful period drama directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda who I think qualifies as an auteur. I think most western movie fans will know him for Shoplifters. Waiting to see if Andor takes the spot later. 📽️ #filmsky

It's an exceptional fim about chosen family under precarity and solidarity against the (insufficient) status quo. You might catch feelings!
