I don’t want to leave a negative review, however I simply can’t give this a thumbs up due to the lacklustre AI. It was said to me over at winter war (their other game) the AI was being improved, and that with each game the improvements would be ported back. This seemed reasonable and the SGS games certainly get much more support than other Avalon Digital titles (more on that later). However there has been no improvement, or rather if there has it’s minimal. I’m not looking for expert AI, but…

Information / Review English SGS Afrika Korps is a strategy simulation game that depicts the campaigns and battles of Erwin Rommel's legendary Afrika Korps. The game was developed like its predecessor by The Strategy Game Studio. Gameplay / Story In mid-November 1941, the British Eighth Army launched a major offensive in North Africa in order to inflict as devastating defeat as possible on the German Africa Corps under Rommel, which was used to victory. The previous attacks - formal…

There are six campaign scenarios to play: Operazione E 1940, Afrika Korps 1941, Battle Axe 1941, Crusader 1941, Afrika Korps 1942 and El Alamein 1942. The scenarios recreate some famous battles involving Erwin “Desert Fox” Rommel and the legendary Afrika Korps which took place in Northern Africa between 1941 and 1942. The campaigns last between Four turns for the short campaigns and Forty - Two turns for the longer campaigns, with each turn equal to two weeks. After choosing the campaign, you…

I wanted to like this game, and there is a lot to like. The mechanics of the game seem like a fine way to simulate this campaign, and I did occasionally have some interesting battles trying to break through at some points while holding others. The fatal flaw, though, is that the AI just isn't very bright. I played as Rommel in the 1941 and 1942 campaigns, and easily blew through the 8th Army, taking Tobruk and Alexandria both times. Also, it seems like there are more air units than land units.…

That's a pretty in depth game that provides quite a lot of game hours when you like the topic. The card-based system is simple enough but deep enough to provide significant depth.

SGS Afrika Korps is one of the smaller-sized titles, a good entry game to the SGS series. Pros: + Interesting combat system, different enough from the classic hex-and-counter wargames. It takes a while to get used to the d20 attack mechanics against no armor/defense factor for the defender. This system is extremely luck based and usually, unless a great number of units are involved, results in very few strength points lost following a battle. + Generally speaking, the presentation is quite…

This is a wonderfull wargame , it's actually a PC version of the boardgame Shifting Sands, looks good and is great fun. However ; the game is unfinished , it locks up constantly in the 'allied reinforcement fase' , so I could not finish 3 out of my last 3 games. There are unused features that dont do anything (strategic bombing , money) with no explanation to them at all , and even obviously less use. This has huge potential , but seems a bit unfinished at times. Update 10-2-2020 ; the issue…

I've only played the first scenario as the Axis (Operation E). I lost on Expert AI difficulty 3 or 4 times (historically accurate), and barely squeaked a win on Basic difficulty, although if there were more turns I certainly wold have lost on the following turn (the Axis merely has to hold Tobruk to win this scenario but that's a heck of a task to accomplish as the Brits are very strong). It's a different war game than I'm used to playing but it's very engaging. There's replayability because…

A nice old school wargame. You can lead the Axis or Allies troops in the North African front. The game offers the possibility to play the major battles plus a long campaign lasting from the early 1941 to late 1942. The gameplay reminds a classic board-game stile, the counters are informative and beautifully crafted, every turn consists of a number of phases in which you draw and play event cards, place reinforcements, move air wings, troops and resolve battles. The event cards impact the…

The game is endless fun to play. The card systems give each game a new ripple. The only down side is that my game constantly freezes on the reinforcement section, so I have to exit out, and restart as a saved game. I read the same exact comment on the sister game "Winter War" , I am fairly sure they share the same engine. Otherwise the game is fun to play.

With AI set to expert. AI poor. Game locks up often. All UK forces out of North Africa turn 20 Afrika Korps 41 scenario. Will be better as a human vs. human game. If bugs are worked out and AI improved I would recommend this game.

The game is obviously well researched and interesting OOB and cards. A few issues i have are as follows - 1. Capture of Benghazi and Tobruk must mean a lot more than the odd desert fortress or random waypoint. 2. Capture and holding of Benghazi and Tobruk means the ports work which should mean a cascade as the whole NA campaign was about logistics more than battles. why? A port meant supplies reached the front, the war ran see-saw simply due to overstretch and logistics. Keeping ports and…

I came across SGS Afrika Corps via a Youtube "First Look" video which then led me to a couple more in depth videos. After watching those and the Developers own short tutorial videos I was hooked! Why? Because I think it is a nice blend of complexity and simplicity combined in one game. I like a game like this that offers a variety of interesting scenarios, some short, some longer. That can be played in an evening or longer depending on the scenario. The variety of cards that can come into play…

I am a big fan of Philippe Thibault since the old Ageod games. This new series (SGS) of his newest company (Avalon Digital) is getting better all the time. This last game covers the North African Campaign, with scenarios covering the main operations and two full campaigns. The AI is much improved with the "Christmas" patch and gives a real fight against the Axis forces. The events and cards give enormous amounts of diversity and flavour. As the previous game of this series (Winter War), I…

Very good wargame ! Although the interface is too big in my opinion, it has the advantage of gathering a lot of information which gives a feeling of clarity of the game very pleasant. I hope there will be a patch with an option to modify the size of the UI. Keep up the good work !

It looks promising, but I have asked for a refund after a very short time with the game. The UI is way too clunky. It has a very jerky unfinished feel while navigating the game and screen. Too bad, it looked very interesting.

Fun game. Recommend playing with delay set to 0, expert AI, music and audio turned down. Playing Axis is typically most challenging. The AI is okay but after about two or three games you can find weakness in its play. Still a fun game.

I didn't like it at first but after a few games I've warmed to it. There are issues - its buggy....and enough to be irritating. And, the AI is very poor......especially for a bookshelf game you need the AI to be strong because, save for nostalgia the game has little else to trade on. On the hardest setting you can cruise a campaign even whilst making daft mistakes because you didnt fully read the rules. It looks really nice though....Unit cards depicting Osprey Men at arms graphics and really…

Too many bugs, Vehicle pictures shown on counters but no identifying information. AI is mediocre at best, this is 2025 and AI is becoming very good and I expect the same in games like this. Some of you are calling it a "beer and Pretzel" game. I'm middle-aged and wanted a turn-based game that resembles old boardgame/wargames. I really had trouble learning the system at first, but after 5-7 hrs of play on the abbreviated scenarios, I learned and discovered the system is fun and worthwhile. I can't say I recommend it to others, because everyone has different tastes, but the system works for me and I'll probably purchase other games from Avalon Digital. Everything feels slick and works well, some minor bugs here or there but the save system is pretty effective. While I enjoy complex, hex-based war games, I also enjoy fast-paced games, provided they are a realistic portrayal of events. I find this game most satisfying, as it has depth, yet is fast moving. It simulates the key things (movement, reinforcement, supplies, etc.) a commander need manage, yet does not have time-consuming micromanagement. Looking forward to future offerings from SGS.

---=== VERY NICE ===--- A really cool historical strategy game depicting quite well the ebb and flow of operations in the desert and along the coasts of Lybia and Egypt. It’s a game for historical gamers who will look past the game flow, perhaps a bit too segmented to my taste, but that’s probably a necessary evil as you can this way plays a lot of historical cards and events during your turn. Great game about the fighting in North Africa in WW2. The legendary AftiKa Korps under Rommel and the Italians, against the British Empire. A good successor to Avon Hills Afrika Korps board game. The vastness of North Africa makes for a large battle area. This game factors in maintaining your supply lines while you advance across the vast desert. What a walk down memory lane for lovers of Avalon Hill's Afrika Korps. My initial take was the joy of memory, I am not adding to that pleasurable moment of re-engagement. This game is so much richer than the board game, for one thing, instead of a single scenario, it has a scenario for each phase of the war.
