It was the 16th highest grossing film of 1983. That isn't a hit, that's a very solid performance. Hits from 1983 include "Return of the Jedi", "Terms of Endearment":", "Flashdance" and "Trading Places". All of those movies crushed Scarface in theatres.

Flashdance and Risky Business were more definitive of mainstream 1983 than Scarface tbh. Some of those folks who paid to see it were literally walking out of theaters in the middle of it. No doubt, it was a big movie.. but nobody was wearing Scarface merch in the 80's. Nobody.
Scarface is a far more influential film. 80s culture was shaped by the 1983 classic.
