60 of 149 · most liked firstWell... Here is the continuation to Runaway series, Runaway: The Dream of the Turtle, made in 2006. Aside that little bit of factual definition, there is not a single good thing to say about this game. If you've played the first game and declared it a tasteless, tacky and overcomplicated little adventure full of character stereotypes as I did, be warned: This is way worse than the first game. At least, the first game was working properly! Adventures of self-acclaimed genius Ken doll Brian…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh Gina that ass This game made me aware of Pendulo studios which makes good point&click adventure games but are not very well known developers. Runaway 2 art style and atmosphere reminds me of Broken sword, but I can’t say it’s a copy f that game. It has its own soul and that's the most important thing. As always in point&click games gameplay consists of collecting any garbage you find on the way and using it or combining with something else. And of course talking, a lots of talking…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short version: 37% The second Runaway game is more beautiful and even stupider than the first one. If you like immature sex jokes and rampant racism, and don’t mind horrific plot dump dialogues, you may have some fun, but otherwise just skip it. (It’s not even needed for the third game.) Long version: Runaway: A Road Adventure was a beautiful, but overcomplicated point ‘n’ click with ridiculous puzzles, terrible voice acting, and a story that eventually turned out to be quite nice in the very…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Runaway, Dream of the Turtle is the second installation after Runaway , Road adventure which I also played. Those games are made in the typical point and click adventure styles which was made famous by classics like Monkey Island or day of the tentacles in the 90s. Those games with some others made in the 90's are seen as the pinacle of adventure games, with their smart puzzles, great stories and humour, a golden age which is gone. Although adventure games are not as numerous or famous as they…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Positives: - beautifully drawn backgrounds and the cell-shaded character models look good (unless in extreme close-ups, which the cutscenes love to use) - sometimes(!) the main character is, for your convenience, very smart when solving puzzles and will automatically combine the correct items if they are in the inventory, or even pick up needed, but trivial to obtain items without further input required (e.g. early on, stranded in a jungle, you can't reach an object, and Brian automatically…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In some ways, an improvement on the first Runaway game, in others, it's not as good. If you enjoyed the first game, I'd pick this one up for sure, but I probably wouldn't recommend approaching it without. The first half of the game is set in beautiful tropics and the colour and art is actually really nice. Some... interesting writing and a few annoying puzzles, but the last half hour will be some of the most frustrating that you will have ever experienced. It is probably best as a buffer…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love adventure games. I do. And I lkied the original Runaway way back in the days of VGA. But this, despite having gorgeous art, and the point and click modality down to a science, is a "skip it" game. Pendulo has to have some of the worst dialog and plot writers working in games, or their translators should be horsewhipped...it's hard to know who to blame. But either way, the dialog and plot are stereotypically gawd-awful. And the puzzles suck. Suck hard. No happy ending either. Just a "to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's bad. It's really bad. Everyone that says so is right. I have enjoyed many a Pendulo game, but this one takes the cake. I'd heard the Runaway series was not great and I had bought it years ago and I was always hesitant to play, but finally I started playing them and I got to the second game and it was so bad. It was anger inducing bad. Brian has become a grade-A d-bag. Other reviewers have said this, and it's absolutely true. He has become the kind of guy that no one likes. You want bad…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →NOTE: I had a lot of trouble running this game on my Windows 7 64 bit PC. It was unplayable even after attempting every fix I could find. Apparently this is due to an issue with AMD video cards. I had to run it on my laptop and use the new Steam In Home Streaming option to play on my PC. However, I still had issues with crashing, especially towards the end of the game. Keep this issues in mind when choosing whether to purchase this game. Runaway, the Dream of the Turtle is a point and click…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →2006 point-and-click adventure game in which Brian Basco travels through exotic locations while solving puzzles ✅Significantly improved graphics compared to the first game ✅Some puzzles are logical and satisfying to solve ✅The game preserves the classic point-and-click formula, which I am a huge fan of ✅The price is good ❌The story jumps between multiple plotlines and locations, making it feel like several different stories stitched together into one ❌Many puzzles require illogical actions or…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is bugged. Not only that there are game breaking bugs that never got fixed, on Windows 8 at least there are also severe lags in the cut sequences. Overall it makes the game really not worth getting. I played until chapter 4, but after chapter 3 the cut sequence wasn't only laggy, but simply broken and wouldn't let me get to chapter 4 at all. I used a savestate at the start of chapter 4 just to find out that there is an effect in that chapter that slows the game down to a crawl. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game rocks and I recommend it to any fan of point and click adventure games. Yeah the ending leaves a lot to be desired but it is the second game of a trilogy. The writing is hilarious and most of the puzzles are fun. Definitely try it out but play Runaway first!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What did I expect: exciting and dynamic adventure with hot bimbo, interesting characters, bright events, simple and fun story with cartoon villains. What did I get: babysitting obnoxious middle aged freak in a company of other annoying middle aged dudes, in a very sluggish, convoluted and boring story, with stereotypical aliens and aged TF2 Sniper as a villain. Huh... where do I even start? Well, obviously, I've seen those negative reviews. But you never know, right? Maybe it's another hidden…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After the not-so-smashing effect the first Runaway game had on me, I was a bit wary of the second. Unfortunately, I was more than right. To make it simple, the second game is like the first one in almost every aspect, only more so. That means the visuals are even better, the music... well, it's not quite as good but still superb - and that's where the positives end. The characters are either a-holes or idiots, our protagonist being the prime example of the former class. And he's not even funny,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For those of you who don't know this is the second in the series and much like the first it once again follows Brian Basco or at least a man with the same name. This time around Brian finds himself crashed on an island filled with secrets and it's up to him to find Gina before something bad happens to her. To be honest I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first but it was alright, I prefer the Brian from the first game and it almost feels like the two are completely different characters…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still not funny. Still an obnoxious character. Still have to do things in a very linear order. Still can't get him to do the obvious unless he has already figured it out (somehow). Still difficult to locate items or action points. On top of that, the game stretches on wide monitor, which is pretty annoying. You could use DxWnd on non-Steam versions to fix this. (Note: that's why the playtime isn't properly reflected). Oh, and some cutscenes are weird: it feels like important events are missing.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →2nd Runaway game keeps the feeling from first game partially in it's puzzles and feeling, but it's very odd totality when starting to look it as a whole. It's easily worst title out of three, but still it has some good points. At start it seems you have story going on and motivation and goal, but then it kind of loses itself on the way and goes literally all over the place and in the end ends to a cliffhanger where the motivation and goal hasn't been reached basically almost at all from the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was...pretty much a disappointment for me. Not a huge one, more like a big meh feeling. I think the only upsides were the new environments/backgrounds and that they finally cured the game of pixel hunting-itis. The items you can interact with and pick up were a lot more visible and obvious now. But then, everything else seemed to have rolled downhill from there. I brushed it off initially from the first game since I was convinced it was a one time thing, but sadly, they kept the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is just... absurd. It tries to be funny, Monkey-Island style, but fails miserably. The puzzles are sometimes really annoying and there's that thing I hated in the first game as well - you can clearly see an object A, but Brian (main character) will refuse to take it. However, after having a completely unrelated dialogue with another character, Brian WILL pick up object A because it now makes sense (does it?) to pick it up. I'd call this a poor game design, even though it may look…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gonna keep this one short as Runaway - The Dream of The Turtle (or just Runaway 2) is rather similar to Runaway and therefore my review for part 1 is pretty much the same. My major problem with R1 was it's illogical sometimes infuriatingly dumb puzzles. Puzzles have gotten better for R2, but you still run into bad puzzles. Still can't recommend this game, as it's story is plain dumb, voiceacting is very flat and the pacing is off all over the place. Just a short example: In chapter 5 there is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended as part of the Runaway trilogy, well, sure, I guess, but I have a hard time recommending this by itself. This game combines all the flaws of Runaway: A Road Adventure (pixel hunting, and to be repeated same interactions most of all) with none of its redeeming qualities; protagonist has gone from nice-guy to bro-doofus; every other character is seemingly (also) used as an irritant alone. The writing is all over the place, and with the game ending on a true low note. First…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The shakiest part of the Runaway trilogy builds on the previous game bringing everything that you liked (or didn’t) in full force. The road is a bit rough, but views are great, and the company is fun! The story picks up not far from where “The Road Adventure” left off with Brian and Gina enjoying the cash they scored at the end of the last ordeal, spending it on an island vacation. A seemingly innocent, although adrenaline-fueled activity of skydiving forces Brian to push Gina out of the plane…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In Chapter 4 of the game, the snow slows down the processor so the graphics lag, and the game sometimes quits unexpectedly during this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love the original Runaway, but found this sequel weird. Brian transforming into a 'Bro' is character progression, but I never liked that Brian fell in love with Gina in the first game and then decided to be "serviced" by a stranger in this... From a point and click veterans perspective the series is up there with the best, but it is hard to recommend this one even though I can admit I enjoyed playing it. There was huge backlash with this game and the way it ended, and I remember the developers…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dropped on the 4th chapter because I don't want to waste my time fixing optimization bugs that developper doesn't care to fix.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Introduction Runaway: The Dream of the Turtle is a point and click adventure with humorous story. It is a sequel to A Road Adventure, most of the cast returns and it makes a lot of callbacks to the first game’s events. Luckily, it has a recap as on option in the main menu, so playing the original is not required. Pros & Cons Pros: + Beautiful locations and animation + A lot of funny jokes + Nice soundtrack Cons: - Awful technical state - Story is all over the place - A lot of illogical…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After being somewhat disappointed by its predecessor, I have now also played through Runaway 2 - The Dream Of The Turtle. And I think it's the worst adventure game I've ever played. Whereas in the first part at least the story was somewhat cool and the puzzles were annoying because of that stupid gimmick that Brian doesn't use or take everything directly, it's even worse here. Runaway 2 builds on an annoying side character from the predecessor and everything that was said there as a joke for a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very laggy in chapter 4. The developer has no solution.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I finished this game but I don't recommend it unless you get a 90% discount. It has racist depictions of jamaicans, latinos and asians. It has sexist, misogynist depictions of women. It isn't very funny, mostly sad and boring. The artwork is very nice, the music is pleasant and the cut scenes are well rendered. I ran into a Windows processor affinitiy issue that caused me crashes in chapter 5. 5 out 10 is generous.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A nice little point and click series. Not the best out there, put worth a play if you like the genre.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not gonna waste your time: -Brian's a douchebag -Almost all of the new characters are completely unlikable -Music is worse -Puzzles are more obtuse, picking up items is somehow even more context/exposition sensitive -Story is almost completely incoherent, random events sort of just crop up to pad the story along -Chapter 3 features Brian going blackface for the entire chapter -Chapter 4 features Brian tricking an innocent guy into getting raped by a polar bear then laughing it off -Ends…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A lot of things is a matter of preference when in comes to old school adventure games. I believe that the inability to highlight objects should be a huge no-no for any game after 2010. Here, you will have to pixel hunt your way out of many situations. Moreover, all the plot holes are covered by extraterrestrial deus ex machinas. Also you'll have to fight some technical issues to finish it. Chapter 3 I'm looking at you. I prefer the first game. At least the first game was rooted in reality and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Runaway, The Dream of The Turtle The sequel to a weird and totally derailed adventure for Brian Basco and his girl Gina Timmins After ripping off the Sandrettis in the first part of the series and bailing out with millions of dollars Brian and Gina decided to take a vacation on the islands of Hawaii. But as expected things went down pretty fast. Brian conviced Gina to a basejump trip which went horribly wrong. Not very long after this incident you will encounter weird things - even weirder…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disclaimer - Runaway: Dream, of the Turtle is a decent point and click adventure game very much built and driven around the same principles of old-school point and click classics you'd expect. So this recommendation is not about the game, it's about the version on Steam. You will experience technical issues unfortunately which require way too much heavy lifting to solve for a game of its size and nature. If you love Runaway, go to GOG.com and buy their version. Unfortunately, Steam version…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I should have listened to the other reviews. This is by far the worst Runaway in the series. My first hour playing the game felt gratifying with its puzzles and challenges, but then when I got to the chapter with the snow, the game was painfully slow because of the falling snow effect/graphics. I dunno if it's my laptop or the game itself. Still, I trudged through that chapter but then the next ones - the puzzles are too ridiculous, the dialogues too lengthy, and the ending, very disappointing.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Words can not describe this game. It trapped me for a good 25 minutes not allowing me to exit before I unplugged my PC...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good graphics and interesting story with some humour. Voices and music is both good too! Opening music specially pretty good. Puzzles are ok and not too hard. Some can be weird if you have not played many point&click games but for veteran players there is no challenge. Only bad things is that many times you can't complete clear puzzle if you have not first talked to someone about how to do it so you must play slower. Very big shame that Steam does not let take screenshots in this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seriously sucks. Look in the plane front trap, picks a few items, but leaves an important item needed later on. So you just try anything and everything, until you look again in the trap, and then "ho, this might be useful"... ♥♥♥♥ off.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommended the first episode of Runaway (A Road Adventure) but I cannot do so with this one. If this game was bug-free, it could basically write the exact same as for the first episode: it has plenty of defaults (stereotyped dialogues, uncoherent puzzles that sometimes frustrate the player for hours) and yet the story and the characters prove to be interesting enough to push me to go further at every chapter. However, the Dream of the Turtle suffers from crippling bugs: screen going green…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I won't bother giving a review of the game in itself. My biggest issue is that this is a game that shouldn't be sold at all. It has known bugs that there are no patches for. To knowingly sell a product that doesn't work doesn't put Pendulo Studios in a good light. I got to chapter 4 and there in the glitchy, buggy, snowy Alaska the game froze to death. It had multiple deaths in Alaska and there is no way to bring it back to life. I say don't buy it, as that rewards bad behavour (selling ♥♥♥♥…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed the first game, and was finding this one fun, however the game ground to a halt on chapter 4. Became very glitchy etc. I have a powerful machine, so seemed strange. I reset my machine, and booted into game. It was still glitchy. For this reason I cannot give it a thumbs up.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →From the opening moments of this game, I didn't care for what I was seeing. And that feeling didn't let up. It wasn't long before I couldn't take any more. Writers sometimes say that a good editor editor will cut out the third of the manuscript that's just chaff. This game was in dire need of such an editor, both for the cinematics and for the dialog. Cinematics in this game quickly wander to places that do nothing to further the story. Dialogue keeps talking for too long....and, worse…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The second part of the Runaway story is as high flying, gravity defying mixture of good and bad of adventure games clichés. Graphicwise Runaway: The Dream of the Turtle follows in the footsteps of the first game Runaway: A Road Trip. It is partially hand-drawn and partially 3D rendered considerably smoothly animated graphics. The outcome works out very nicely. On the sound department the game balances between good an corky. The melody of the theme song is rather catchy and personally I liked…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quirky doesn't really cut it. Everything I've played from Pendulo has a twisted element to it -- and not really in a good way. Concerning this particular installment, I'll say this. I don't know if any wife would accept that her husband rationalized receiving sexual favors from a hot island woman in his search for said wife. That's the kind of messed up stuff they do in these games, and it really portrays their protagonists as non-heroes that I want to see FAIL instead of succeed. I played…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent adventure!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sorry I bought it on sale. Graphics are great, dialog is lame, and puzzles are ludicrous not so much hard as they are ridiculous. Kept on having to refer to a walkthrough guide to progress along and there was nothing else about the game that makes it worthwhile to.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This sweetly schizoid and rather lengthy adventure is the high point of the Runaway trilogy. The puzzles are difficult enough, the story is all dreamlike insanity, the graphics are colorful and the humor is well done. It is truly unfortunate that the third and final game does not run on in the same vein.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fantastic adventure series with an excellent storyline thats a nice challenge, make sure to play all three in order for continuity.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very enjoyable and more of the first one. This one has a storyline you certainly can't predict and it has that comedy to it too. :) If you enjoyed the first one you should definitely buy this right away, it's fun and awesome! Edit: It's one of those certainties in these kinds of worlds with mystery and intrigue that even going on holiday after the stressful and crazy adventure where you met your significant other, you get pulled into a whole new mystery that puts your lives on the line once…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Boring.. Dumb story.. strange setup.. 4 of 10..
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →my childhood game :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The best part of the trilogy
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought this trilogy and with every game I have the same issue - the screen flickers and scrambled video makes it unplayable. For some reason I can't force it to run in windowed mode. If I try to set compatibility with the .exe the game just crashes and won't run. Buyer beware if you are trying to run any of the Runaway games with anything Windows 7 and above as there is pretty much no more online support.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an excellent point and click game! I cannot comprehend the low steam rating it has received at all. It's as good as other titles with 80% or so thumbs up for sure. The attention to detail in the animations all-throughout the game are far above and beyond what you'll see in most other titles in the early 2000s... heck even compared to more recent ones. I absolutely love games that don't cut corners. There is lots of dialog to be had, most of the characters and voice work is both…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played the first one recently and while it was dated, it was still decent and I enjoyed it for the most part. I was unable to finish this one because it was so buggy that I couldn't get past chapter 4. The cutscenes were horrendous. Extremely slow and buggy. P.S. It says I played almost double the hours I actually did because when it bugged out and I closed it, Steam still kept tracking it like it was running - I guess just a part of the bug. Steer clear, even if you got it for free.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For this current day and age of a lack of interest in point and click adventure games I don't recommend this title, it being the weakest of the three in the Runaway series. In addition to that I personally find Brian to be a hands down douche and just can't connect with him as the main character. Furthermore the main supporting character in Joshua is even worse. Most of the puzzles are okay however there is that annoying trait in Runaway games where you need to "stage out" a problem in order…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A classic point'n'click adventure. Canonic. It's good to change the games you play. I like it but think there are better adevntures over there
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Verdict ✅ Strongly Recommended One of my absolute favorite point-and-click adventures. If you like classic adventure games, this is a gem. Personal context 🏆 This is my 15th favorite game of all time. ⏱️ Finished once on Steam in about 11 hours. 🕰️ I also finished it as a kid around release, and I remember it so strongly that I literally had dreams about this game. ⚙️ Just like Runaway 1, I had to lower my Windows resolution to around 800x600 to play it comfortably. Who this is for 🎯 Play…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dont't bother buying this game as it's unplayable in it's present form. There seems to be no support either from steam or pendula studios for the fix. I'm totally frustrated looking for an update as i want to continue to play this game. Total waste of money if no fix is done for windows 10.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Runaway: The Dream of The Turtle feels like 6 separate poorly designed point and click adventure games strung loosely together by extremely dated racism and sexual "humor" that culminates to a cringe worthy cliff hanger that was clearly intended to hype the next game but fails miserably. First, the game suffers from some critical design flaws. Namely performing tasks requires flags to be triggered. Say you search a trunk and find nothing. Go fish some goggles out of a puddle and suddenly…
