Pom Poko
The Raccoons of the Tama Hills are being forced from their homes by the rapid development of houses and shopping malls. As it becomes harder to find food and shelter, they decide to band together and fight back. The Raccoons practice and perfect the ancient art of transformation until they are even able to appear as humans in hilarious circumstances. From TMDB

I talked about Ghibli's weirdest movie Pom Poko on the @japanonfilm.bsky.social podcast. japanonfilm.com/pompoko
unlabelledView post →Pom Poko (1994) Lovely, deeply bizarre Studio Ghibli film about a bunch of raccoons with magic nut sacks. The English dub I saw years ago went to hilarious lengths to avoid any reference to raccoon testicles. Written and directed by Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata - BOTD in 1935

Loved the creature design, particularly for reptiles and amphibians. Oh, and I'm glad they did what Bad Guys wouldn't by letting the villain get eaten, haha.

unlabelledView post →I don't think I've changed my mind on a film as much as Isao Takahata's Pom Poko. There's a LOT of movie and ideas in there, and the episodic, repetitive nature is tough the first watch, but now I believe it is necessary to achieve the feeling of the film. Here's 10 brilliant clips.(Spoilers)

unlabelledView post →The scene where Miyazaki finds out Takahata passed away, immediately criticises his old friend and says Pom Poko was a boring movie ONLY to then discover via their producer that they screened the movie in Takahata’s memory and Miyazaki cried all the way through it? Just shoot me in the heart.

unlabelledView post →I watched Pom Poko this week for the first time, went to the theater totally blind, and I did NOT expect the emphasis on tanuki balls lmaooo 😭 great film! but yeah that caught me off guard
unlabelledView post →Whisper of the Heart is beautiful. Cat Returns is worth it for Peter Boyle's dub alone. Only Yesterdays is a truly great film that has been underrated for so long it might be correctly rated now. Pom Poko is plodding & ridiculously Japanese but my daughter loves it. Ocean Waves is mid but not bad
unlabelledView post →Semi-related, but the best animated movie about the environment would be Pom Poko (1994). Come for the tanuki testicle jokes, stay for the absolutely devastating existential dread.

unlabelledView post →The character design (of the various cats) in this movie is simply amazing. My second fav is Pom Poko. Only after these two some Miyazaki ones pop up.
unlabelledView post →I love POM POKO. Such an underrated Studio Ghibli film. Its ecological themes felt stronger than PRINCESS MONONOKE. Also, it's basically “what if we made eco-extremism the anime and then marketed it to children.”
unlabelledView post →This week's Sunday evening movie was Hoppers. I didn't really know what to expect but it was a fun low stakes family friendly movie. It's very Pixar - I'd describe it as Avatar meets Pom Poko. 🦫🦫🦫

unlabelledView post →The only addition I can possibly make to one of today's Discourses is to reflect on the Ghibli movie Pom Poko, and how one of the desperate tanuki stretches his scrotum into a boat in which his community sails away, and how this effort fails and his community dies.

I say it’s a combination of Avatar, Mission impossible, and Pom Poko with a sprinkle of the emperor’s new groove. 9/10 for me. #pixar #webarebears #hoppers #fanart #digitaldrawing
