My Neighbors the Yamadas
The Yamadas are a typical middle class Japanese family in urban Tokyo and this film shows us a variety of episodes of their lives. With tales that range from the humorous to the heartbreaking, we see this family cope with life's little conflicts, problems, and joys in their own way. From TMDB

unlabelledView post →My Neighbors the Yamadas is another fantastic addition from the late Isao Takahata. Out of all the film from Studio Ghibli, this is their most grounded film yet. The visual are minimalistic yet there is so much depth to the characters and their lives from hardships, regrets, and fulfillment.

Though part of me wishes for an extended anime TV series of it because I want more shorts of this family. I also appreciate the Moonlight Mask homage.

It’s Isao Takahata’s penultimate film, MY NEIGHBORS THE YAMADAS, and we couldn’t resist adding it Joining us to revel in the brilliant (and surprisingly vindictive) mind of the man called Paku-San is our dear friend and digital producer, Nik Long!

Solo: A Star Wars Story could be funny? Maybe Pearl? The Bob’s Burgers Movie? My Neighbors The Yamadas? Eight Crazy Nights?!?!
unlabelledView post →I don't know what's weirder here: it being an all-CG Ghibli film in this boring of an art style (at least My Neighbors The Yamadas went for an unusual look!), or Kacey Musgraves being in the English voice cast. 🤔
unlabelledView post →Watched the anime movie My Neighbors the Yamadas. It's directed and written by Isao Takahata. I wasn't sure what to expect heading into it. I was surprised it was a 1999 movie. I was also surprised how much I liked the animation style because I put off watching it for so long because of it. #filmsky

unlabelledView post →Oh definitely. I think he's a harder sell for Murrican audiences, as I think his work is more directly in dialogue with Japan, but that's not really a problem in my experience. Though the use of poetry in My Neighbors The Yamadas doesn't translate well, so I miss out on that. Good movie anyway.
unlabelledView post →1999 was an excellent year for anime movies too: "Adolescence of Utena", "Jin Roh", "My Neighbors the Yamadas" (and, if you're a big fan, "Pokémon the Movie 2000') 🥰🥰🥰.

unlabelledView post →My Neighbors the Yamadas (Film, 1999) Friend group is working our way through every Ghibli film, this was next. What a weird film. The movie has no overarching plot, but instead was a bunch of isolated character vignettes. It worked for me in Napoleon Dynamite but not here. Cultural differences?

It's a simple and cute movie about the lives of a chaotic yet loving family. One of Studio Ghibli's most unique films.
unlabelledView post →Well that was My Neighbors The Yamadas. It was cute but wasn’t even a movie, it was just a bunch of shorts grouped together based off a newspaper comic. If I were to describe it, imagine if The Simpsons were rated G.

Are there any similar movies that give off the same feeling for Americana in the 2000s or 2010s?
