Can anyone build an empire in a place like this? Other factions are naturally suspicious of newcomers and may wage war at the first sign of unidentified craft. Here, a natural death is an uncommon luxury. From the Steam store page

Almost all of the reviews, both good and bad, are lies. This game in its current state is a disaster. The base code is a mismash of a bunch of much better games spackled together poorly and with bad graphics. Anything you might like about this game comes from nostalgia for other games you already own anyway. The ship building is a crappier version of StarDrive, the races are not quite stolen from Master of Orion, the planetary interaction is identical to every other space 4X ever made except…

It is a crime that the reviews on average for this title are "mixed". Although there is certainly room to criticize Polaris Sector (no game is perfect) it succeeds on so many levels, where all others have failed, and most importantly, Polaris Sector has that "X-Factor" missing in nearly every space 4x game made in recent memory. Where Polaris Sector succeeds in particular, is in capturing the true epic nature of what you would expect intergalactic warfare and expansion to be. Efforts to…

I want you to picture a civilization with a strong military, expanse and economy. They make allies with a space Koala's who adore us and we fight many war's against the filthy Drill and Sharatar armies. We are such great friends that allow them to settle colonies in my area and I in their's. I move my fleets from their borders and toward the Drill fronts in the name of effiency and trust. Koala's immedietly demand stars from me and declare war. Their fleets are in my territories because of pre…

So , with what i've played so far this is my personal opinon. The game isn't bad. though as some other reviews have said there are definitely other games out there. the tech tree is okay as a novelty but it doesn't really have much in the way of "random" breakthroughs. it tells you exactly how long the tech will take to research and it shows it for all techs based on current amount of generated research points. the ship design is kinda lack luster. You have color coded slots where you can…

I have mixed feelings. I think this game probably has the best tech tree of any 4X game ever and that's saying something. The tech tree is original, fun, allows for rapid adaptation of strategy, but really, most importantly, it shows us something new that we haven't really seen before in the increasingly tired and already-done-before 4X genre by splitting fundamental and applied sciences and allowing research focusing w/ priorization. True game design innovations don't really happen that…

Ok I wanted to like this and I played quite a few hours and did get entertainment out of it but I figured initially you have to play a bit to figure out there is a great game underneath. I like the combat and the naval feel in principle - staring at tiny animations is a bit much - but its just isn't balancd or that fun to keep playing. Its becoems an excercise in strategic micromanagement and tactical space battle frustration. So even early game everyoen seems ot be abale to pack way more…

First off, check out the positive reviews for why you should play this game. I think the game itself has a lot to offer for select players. My negative review centers around the fact the game simply isn't fun and does not have a lot of flexibility in terms of how you can play it. See the below notes. - I've played against the AI at "Normal" and "Challenge" settings. In both cases the gameplay is rather stagnant in the sense that there are only 1-2 optimal strategies. I.e. The first species to…

This 4X game may not have that much graphics. But it makes up for it with these things. - Formidable AI that can ruthlessly crush you if you turn the difficulty up. - Research system is different from other 4X games in a good way. - Ship designing is fun. - Good challenging tactical combat. A thinkers game not only strategicly but tacticly as well. - Unusual spy system. You build stealth ships that spy instead of sending agents. The only thing i could wish for is-- -The techtree has about…

TETRIS in Spaaaace!! There are a some things to like about Polaris Sector. Tactical combat combat is fun & interesting. Planet management forces tough choices on the player - science, industry, or agriculture? But these good points do not make up for the negatives. 1. Ship design is a game of fitting rectangles into irregular holes. Btw you are not allowed to rotate any of the rectangles even though it would make sense. Your scientist are too dumb to figure out how to make a 6x4 shape…

Very much worth picking up for fans of space 4x. PS doesn't do anything revolutionary, but it is compelling throughout. I'm a huge Paradox fan and have been for years, but I keep choosing to play Polaris Sector over Stellaris. Especially if you care about designing ships and ship combat tactics, PS is clearly superior to Stellaris where those criteria are concerned. A good 'middle ground' space 4x. Deeper than Master of Orion or StarDrive. Not as overwhelming as Distant Worlds.

I received this game as a reviewer copy and my life is poorer for it. If you have ever heard of a space 4X game that is not Polaris Sector, then you have heard of a better game. Polaris Secror is an unholy abomination constructed out the worst visuals, horrible audio design and levels of micro that Gary Grisby would find needless. I'll give you an example. If you want to have a carrier, you have to design and build a carrier. Than you have to design fighters and build them much in the same…

Not completely awful, but on the very low end of mediocre and not at all worth the asking price. There is essentially no planetary control, no economy, an entirely ignorable research system, and for a game with so much automation it comes down to an incredible amount of micromanagement since the only way to play is hyper-wide. Planets have basically up to 4 options, production, research, mining, or food. Each of those options has one or two buildings that you spam on a planet, and each one you…

Pretty interesting space grand strategy / 4X game. This is closer to what I imagined Stellaris would be, when Paradox first announced it - the gameplay feels a bit like Europa Universalis 3 in space in some regards (sliders and pseudo-sliders abound). The scale of space here is pretty nice as well, with fuel and ship re-fueling becoming pretty important if you are settling far away or attacking deep into enemy territory. The interface is a bit clunky at times, but it's functional once you…

So this review is going to be pretty simple I'll start by looking at where this game is weak, then I'll go over the good points. What this game isn't is: Pretty - The graphics are dated and pictures are retro and there's nothing mind blowing in the interfaces its all very basic and very dated looking. If you want a game that looks pretty this isn't it. What this game could do better; Exploration, while finding planets and the occasional caches are in, as far as 4x games go this is pretty weak…

The fundamental problem with the game is that it wastes a lot of the player's time. Example: a default game will have 360 stars, and for each star you need to manually send a scout to the star, respond to the notification that the scout arrived at the star, then look at the star to see what you found. There's not much to it in terms of actual discovery; for most purposes a star will have one of ~8 usable planet types & can be dealt with in a standard fashion. There's no auto explore option…

Polaris Sector is an excellent Space 4X game. It is now one of my favorite games to play. It can be a long game. There are different speed setngs for the stratgic gameplay. Star travel is by star lanes. The economy system is easy and fun to use. Building the econonmy up is very important if a large Space Fleet is desired. Initially posted a neg review because there is a lot going on here and the game seemed a bit scattered. I went back to it and gave another chance and Polaris has turned me around. Yes the graphics and music are indie level but the playability is great, especially once you take some time to get to know it. The AI and economics are both pretty solid, tech tree is rich, and it's one of the few 4x with both a strategy and tactical component to it. Go nuts

There is simply too much going on. The tutorial only really covers space combat (a minor part of the game from what I can tell) and glosses over the rest. Some ships can travel from planet to planet, and others with the same engines cannot and the only explanation is that it doesn't have the right kind of engine. About 5 minutes after I meet an alien species, they declare war on me regardless of what I do to try and foster good relations. The development tree is so convoluted that there is…

Suprisingly fresh-looking 4x space strategy, compared to relatively all-the-same 4x titles published in the last couple of years. Finally: 1. Relatively complex and deep tactical combat system, where every action means possible change of initiative and battle odds. Finally skill and tactical sense matters, and you can either lose your advantage if you make several mistakes, or you can win even against unfavorable odds if you make a few right decisions. 2. The ship cost is very high - they are a…

This is an excellent little title! It's light on the Colony Management piece for a Space 4X, but the combat is extraordinary and meshes well with both the research and ship design pieces of the combat to come up with a unique feel for combat. This game also really gets down the EPIC feeling of empires spending entire human generations at war with one another--the time scale is done just right and nothing happens too quickly. What is most different about this game is the research system. The…

I've played this game extensively (off-line), and many features are quite good. However, I have two main gripes: 1) AI gets unlimited fuel. This absolutely destroys any attempt at strategy, because small AI ships (Corvettes) can travel over huge distances (while you cannot) and sack your colonies--often while they are still defenseless. This is most apparent in the critical early game. Absolutely game-breaking for me. Some people praising the AI are probably just seeing these AI "super…

With the current glut of MOO2-wannabes, it's refreshing to see a game that brings something new and refreshing to the genre, and Polaris Sector does that in spades. It makes building and ruling a huge, galaxy-wide empire smooth, enjoyable, and full of interesting decisions, streamlining away all of the drudgery that drags down so many other games of the genre. That it has a "mixed" rating is completely unacceptable. This is the finest space 4X to be released in years.

Nice and deep space 4X game, definately the best of the recent releases. It also avoided a common fact with 4X which is that many features are copy/pasted beetween games, so it will feel fresh even if you're used to the genre. In a nutshell, it's a bit rough but a must for every space 4X fan. It shines in empire management, elegant mechanics, diplomacy. It would deserve a bit more streamlining. Why is it better than most other 4X? + Rewarding diplomacy: Interactions pretty rational. There…

Things I like: It has a no-money economy system, so there is no rush buying of things -- which makes every decision about what to build and when to build it very meaningful. The pace of the game feels real: travel between stars takes years, if not decades, as does planet development. So I feel like I'm watching my empire develop over a period of decades and centuries. AI - Good From what I've played the AI is quite good, both strategically (exploring, expanding, etc) and tactically (diplomacy, space combat, esionage, etc). Do not buy in its current state. The mid-late game is extremely tedious with the micromanaging of troops for invasions (which are inevitable as this is basically a war game and the automation is useless), fuel tankers for the clunky fuel system and constantly sending fighters to the front line. Entire combat system is based around small fighters, which you have to manually manage - and in some fights there are as many as 1000. Good luck sustaining an invasion campaign without a massive…

Aweful user interface, with no intuitive layout nor expected buttons. No tutorial, which even for an experience player is necessary due to the poor user interface. Graphics are atrocious, and far worse than what is displayed in the store page. They definitely cherry picks the images to make it look better than it actually is. Adendum: After the developer responded to my review indicating there was a tutorial, I went back to try the tutorial only to find it completely unusable. I've posted a…

Just a mild thumbs down. While there are some nice points to the game ,like I love watching the ships on the main screen moving in space and the unique approach to research, yet there are some very bad presentations for my taste. Ship building should NOT be a tetris puzzle, I find that part very silly and speaking of ships there is no real viable approach to winning other than building up a ton of fleets and just conquering. Diplomacy is there, while wordy still lacks depth or any sense of…

Great game! Designing your fleet from the scratch is damn fun and combining with other management features makes game really exciting.

I really wanted to like this game but I just dont. After the initial thrill of spreading across the galaxy there is really nothing left to do but fight. no real economy to speak of. Dissappointing.

Very good game! It is difficult to beat the AI. The interface is very good as there are various shortcuts to keep the micromanagement to a minimum. The battles are fun and so is the ship design system. Price is high but so is the value. Enjoy!

A little known Gem of the genre. I have played many similar games from Masters of Orion to Stellaris and everything in between, and Polaris Sector is a true Gem. Solid gameplay, with a unique style. Intensive research system Modular Ship construction Real Time battles Very enjoyable

Good Stuff! It's easy to see why some people aren't into this title. For some, this game is just too mean. For others, the interface has that "Indy" feel (but it works). The game doesn't crash--at least, it never has on me. It definitely feels MOO2 ish, in a good way. You build your empire, design your ships, and fight to the death on the tactical screen. Fortunately, that's what I want to do. Also fortunately, it has very good AI on both the strategic and tactical side. That's the best part,…

Honestly, there are alot of nice features or ideas in Polaris Sector that I wish were more common but the game just feels shallow. Pros: - interesting ship design mechanism with varied equipment options - fleet combat feels unique but still satisfying - economic model has some good ideas - races are unique and have intersting ship designs Cons: - very few building options on planets which makes planet development pretty boring - overall flavor of the game feels unfinished. Mechanically alot…

This game is really trying quite hard to do some things differenty than the many other games in the genre and actually manages to succeed in some points. The way it does research and technology is indeed a breath of fresh air in comparison to all the other games that do things the exact same boring predictable way. The ship design also feels more realistic and meaningful when you compare it with the mainly cosmetic and empty experiance of Galactic Civ 3. Also the space battles are done quite…

Having logged over 580 hours on this game i want to say a few words. Super cool strat game with a extremly high level of micromanagement "if you choose that setting" I think this game have been overlooked and underrated. You can customise the race you chose to play... unique techtrees... completly chose how to spec your diffrent spaceships, fighters, sattelites with a multitude of weapons. engins, fueltanks. generators, and a LOT of other stuff. Each Planet you colonize will ask you how you…

This game is really fun and good. I am enjoying myself a lot. I love the slow buildup until you unlock more and more (more tech, more systems, more ship designs). It's a very nice pace, though definitely not for those who are in a rush (although, I guess if so you can set colonies to automanage any of 8 or so preset builds (and you can even create custom builds for the automanager to follow!) and play with high time acceleration). But as I like to micromanage everything that just feels great…
