60 of 237 · most liked firstThis is a decently fun beat-em-up with playable Kurisu from Steins;Gate, but it's an inferior version of the same game on PS4 and Switch. The newer Overdrive version is pretty much the same game with more content and was released in 2017. Nearly 5 years later, this PC version has not received any of those updates, which is a big slap to the face for early adopters. And even more years later, this game has what is essentially a definitive edition with new content. This version of the game is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a fantastic game to play with friends. The music is great and the playable characters are adorable. There is also a lot of variety on their moveset, and they have Kurisu from Steins;Gate, so extra points for that. This game is really underappreciated for what it is tbh. tl;dr: Get it if you just wanna have fun with your friends while beating up otakus and creepy egg dudes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To preface this: despite me not recommending it it's still a fun beat-em-up that can fill the Scott Pilgrim shaped void after you adapt to the game's more..."unique" gameplay features that stem from the series' origin as a fighting game. I initially disliked playing it but I adapted, came to really enjoy it and eventually was able to beat it on its hardest difficulty. Compared to another beat 'em up, Fight N' Rage, this game is a walk in the park. A beautiful walk in the park, I should add,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm very happy this version of the game got relisted. As much as I love the new remake, I just want to see the original version to be around to appreciate how it was before they improve it.

Phantom Breaker Omnia The developers of Asuka 120% got together later to work on this anime game, which inherits the same ideas like clashes and guard cancels. unlabelledView post →I got it for the local co-op but only P1's progression is saved. You can't actually play and progress through the game with couch multiplayer without having to level up each character one by one as player 1, and that just ruins the experience. Really bad design because other players can still pick up EXP and it shows it applying to their character, but when you return to main menu to actually apply skill points, it all resets.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The boss fights sure seem to be broken. I was playing on normal, had no trouble whatsoever getting to the second boss, it wasn't even remotely difficult. Then the boss comes in and absolutely wrecks me. They were doing all sorts of special moves and every time I'd get up and try and counter they'd block my attack and rip out a big combo that'd send me flying. Even my special attack did almost no damage. I got lucky near the end and somehow cheesed them into a corner and dealt some good…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's #RandomGameSaturday time again and this week I have Phantom Breaker: Extra. It's a fighting game with a visual novel character as a fighter! You'd think that would make for a novel (heh) oddity in the genre, but I can think of at least 4 other fighters that also have VN characters, so...

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is a fun little gem of beat 'em up genre. Even more enjoyable with friends, but it's okay as a single player game as well. This is a pretty short, but highly enjoyable game. You start off with 4 base characters and can unlock 6 more by playing through the story mode. If that's not enough, you can also purchase 2 extra characters as DLCs; Kurisu DLC also raises the character level cap. Every character has a unique move set and a nice character design. The whole…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was able to get back into this game recently I played it to work on some achievements. I tried to load it up today and the game won't load, it is just stuck on a black screen with a character frozen on the bottom. There are some very extensive fixes with drivers, or downloading random stuff. Which is completely unnecessary and shouldn't BE necessary for a steam game to run.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been playing Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds Overdrive and I'm happy to say they've finally did it after iterating on the same game for over a decade they have finally made a version that cuts out the tedium and feels snappy to play

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really like this game. A very fun Beat 'em up with multiple characters to choose from, and great ways to do combos. It's one of those games that I enjoyed so much, that I decided to level up every character to the Max. despite having no associated unlockables or achievements for it. Controls felt great, responsible, and the music is just awesome. The Stage 1 theme in particular kicks ass, especially the variants when you play as Kurisu and Frau (DLC characters). I can't say much about the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A Beat 'em up game with a Fighting-style control scheme that locks the players in two side scrolling lanes instead of allowing the free roam of enemies in a 3D plane over a 2D camera. That's brilliant, in my opinion. I always had trouble with depth perception in regular Beat 'em ups, as well as not finding much joy in 1 on 1 traditional Fighting. However, this game nailed it for me. Ten distinct characters with their own combos, specials, and techniques, eight somewhat repetitive levels to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is good and I like it, but I think it's messed up how they didn't update it to be phantom breaker battlegrounds overdrive or even release that version on steam. So I can't really recommend this one, because you aren't getting the full experience. Overall this version of the game is fun, but incomplete. Get it for cheap.

unlabelledView post →The game has a lot of charm and is almost good, but it didn't click for me and I believe it has a few design flaws. - The AI for the enemies is weird. Sometimes they keep standing still not doing anything for a long time. Sometimes they will just combo you over and over. - In some stages, some enemies appear out of nowhere without any kind of transition or animation. - There are item drops when you hit and defeat enemies. There are health pickups, coins, gems. However: - - The coins disappear…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're a fan of beat-em-ups and like some more depth, this is a decent overall pickup. More going on than a Scott Pilgrim, but not as charming as the game goes on. Some okay level design, decently designed mobs, and a great combat system are bogged down as the short 7 Level Campaign goes on. It simply gets worse as it goes on from level to level, but since it's so short there isn't too much to complain about besides the last 2 levels. Each character has a unique moveset, combo/specials, and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Originally owned thie game on the Vita, bought it twice. Because I loooooooove this game! The groovy music, the stylish 8 bits, the fun fighting system.... The fighting is a lot more complex than it lets on, be sure to read the tutorial! It's a beat-em-up for beat-em-up fans, so if you like the genre you'll find yourself coming back to this gem. Only 7 stages long, so expect it to be short. But go for score maybe...! Or time races. If it's on sale it's definitely worth it.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played a lot of beat 'em ups over the years and Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds is one of my all-time favorites, dating back to its initial Xbox 360 release in 2013. What sets Phantom Breaker apart from typical sidescrolling beat 'em ups is its deep, complex set of moves and combos, similar to a fighting game. This makes the gameplay feel a lot less repetitive than your run-of-the-mill 2D brawler, where you mash the same 1-2 buttons and perform the same 1-2 combos over, and over, and over…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like this game. I really do. It has amazing pixel art visuals, a great soundtrack and can be a satisfying beat em up...when it works (I've not tried it co-op). It's even got Steins;Gate DLC, which drew me in the first place. The biggest issue with this game are the bosses. They are FRUSTRATING to fight. You either get combo'ed into the corner of the stage and struggle to counter it, or the boss will just spam the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ moves over and over again until you die. There's a huge…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended. 8/10* Very cute looking pixel art, the environments looks like a cool mix between 3d models and pixel art, the character designs are great, really loved the first akihabara themed scenes, the gameplay is solid, great beat em up like guardian heroes from sega saturn where instead of moving up and down, you need to press a button to go on upper or bottom rails, the animations and controls are really good, and the game its really challenging, till now only beat it with one character,…

My son got this game from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is very amusing. Played this coop and is really fun, of course as all beat 'em up games there are not that many levels. In this game there are a total of eight stages. You unlock an new difficulty each time you clear one, so that will keep you going. I would say 10 hours of play time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really didn't like my experience with this game. I love Beat Em' Ups, but eh. My friends and I all got bored real quick.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I sure hope they don’t ruin this franchise with a bootleg Travis Touchdown[Diego] and a character so generic[Minato] she wouldn’t even fit into other fighting game franchises[except for maybe Phantom Breaker]. Also by focusing on the spin off but without the volleyball or FUN.
unlabelledView post →It's a classic sidescorlling beat 'em up. Not that I am the biggest fan of these to begin with. But Phantom Breaker didn't appeal to me. I felt like mashing buttons was good enough to win. And the story is just fluff on top. Overall not for me.
