As much as Sciamma’s previous film, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, this one, in its quiet way, is sublime. It made me feel better about life, & what more could one want from a work of art?
positive · AI labelView post →Watched Céline Sciamma's Petite Maman (2021) last nite. It was an enchanting French movie about love and grief featuring twin girls who were charming af. 72 minute runtime that felt like a half-hour. I ended up rewatching most of it. I've seen 3 films by Sciamma and they're all excellent.
positive · AI labelView post →Waited much too long to watch Celine Sciamma's Petite Maman. Gentle, powerful. Thinking a lot today about what children need from adults. It's not a foodie film, but I loved all the easy meals, even just the ritual of pouring milk on cereal. This is what parents do.

positive · AI labelView post →I'm still mad that they published My Life as a Courgette - an Oscar nominated feature film!! - as a special feature on the Petite Maman disc.
neutral · AI labelView post →Petite Maman would be worth considering, if you liked Past Lives - another "quiet" movie with a nuanced examination of the relationships between people.
neutral · AI labelView post →Rewatched 'Petite Maman'. Really one of my favorite films. A beautiful and tender 70-minute piece about lost childhood and generational connections. And the actual best time travel movie.
positive · AI labelView post →Hit up the #barnesandnoble #criterioncollection sale with my fellow #filmnerd @jmar1244! I got Céline Sciamma’s PETITE MAMAN , Brett Morgan’s MOONAGE DAYDREAM, Hal Ashby’s BEING THERE, and one new-to-me film, Martin Scorsese’s AFTER HOURS. Can’t wait to see the Scorsese flick! 🤓🎞️🎬

positive · AI labelView post →I picked up a couple almost free movies from Criterion (thanks to surprise coupon codes). Petite Maman is a wonderful movie that almost makes me cry every time I think about it. Don't Look Now is probably in my all time top 5 so I feel real good about picking it up in 4k. Great movies. 📽️

positive · AI labelView post →I rewatched “Petite Maman” (I think it actually was the Criterion edition) and loved it even more the second time. The kid actors in particular were extraordinary. Helped obviously that they were twins but they were so good together. And I normally think kid actors are terrible. The most amazing thing (spoilers I suppose) was the scene where Marion talks about her dream of becoming an actress, and Nellie’s face falls for a tiny fraction of a second, and then recovers. Marion doesn’t notice…

One of the things I find fascinating about movie prices (and clearly I'm speaking for the US) is how I can pay the same thing to see PETITE MAMAN or AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER. A "feature film" could be Chaplin's THE KID or Lean's LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. Running time, budget... all elastic.

And five years ago, I picked The Social Network as a top three film of the 2010s — that pick is aging *magnificently* in my view. Watcher was one of my favourites from Sundance 2022. 👍🏻
