Developer Ice-Pick Lodge

Pathologic 2 (Russian: Мор, romanized: Mor, IPA: [mˈor], lit. 'Pestilence') is a 2019 horror-themed role-playing game developed by Ice-Pick Lodge and published by tinyBuild. Pathologic 2 was originally conceived of as a remake of the developer's earlier 2005 video game Pathologic, but during development grew to encompass a much greater scope. The game has variously been described as a remake, a reboot and a… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

After 5 years of posting, I've done it. I've come up with the least relatable post in the history of the world. This is for me and no one else: No horror video game will ever quite match the feeling I had as, while playing Stardew Valley just now, Pathologic 2 auto-launched in the background

Pathologic 2 (first third of a three-game remake) makes things clearer and doesn't allow for so much save-scumming, but is also more forgiving. More about building an atmosphere of helplessness that you have to mentally overcome. You're trying to save a village that REALLY doesn't want to be saved.

Pathologic 2 is most emphatically not for everyone. It's (just like its predecessor) initially difficult to grasp or appreciate, both mechanically and narratively speaking. Most people understandably don't have the time or patience to experience what Pathologic 2 has to offer. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's not by any means a customary game in the sense that it can be easily categorized. If I were to describe Pathologic 2 to someone who has never played it, I would be inclined to…

An engrossing, surreal exploration of a strange town in the Russian steppe that I absolutely had no fun playing. By design. Its constantly stressful, you're mostly just walking around expect when you have to engage is the awkward combat, and its so difficult that you'll often have to repeat sections of it to make progress. This is the intended experience and its great because it will actually instill in you empathy and understanding for the people that inhabit the town and what their own lives…

Huh. Pathologic 2 is neat. Held off for years thinking it was some HARD CORE HORROR kinda game, but no not at all? Like the world is deeply unpleasant and all that, and there's tension in choices and time passing I guess, but that's a very different thing that doesn't really bother me the same way.

If the main character, the author, or the reader is suffering, then it’s Russian literature. If the author, the main character, and the reader are all suffering, then it’s a classic of Russian literature. And Pathologic 2 is, as you guessed, a classic of Russian literature.

Almost everything in this bundle is both great and super cheap. £1.45 a game if you buy 7 or more. Amid Evil, Dusk, Stop Dead, Post Void, Sprawl and Hyper Demon are rad FPS games. The Dread X collections are fantastic indie 'cryptkeeper' style horror anthologies. Pathologic 2 is art-game hell, etc.

So after only 8 hours in, which is not very much AT ALL, I can definitely warn you of several things. This game is meant to elicit many negative feelings, and that's kind of the point. This game makes you a sarcastic but skilled doctor who walks through a town enveloping in disease. Every conversation and task feels like a stressful, confusing, tiring chore. However, despite all of this, it presents itself in a very unique way. Games can definitely qualify as art, and this is one of the games…

I'm of a firm opinion that no game needs a remake. Fixing up old games so that they can be played on modern systems - yes please. Remaking the same game but """better""" - no thanks, I'd rather see something original and new come out There are some exceptions like Pathologic 2 which is basically a remake but also a reimagining, but those are exceedingly rare.

This game is an ADHD simulator and worst nightmare all in one. There's a million things you have to do, with very little way to know what to prioritize and constantly getting distracted by new quests or finding items in trash cans or delicious egg. The roads are as confusing to navigate as possible and by the time you realize you forgot something important you need to pick up, you're already like halfway across town. And the clock is constantly ticking and you always feel like you're too late…

What happens when you gather a bunch of philosophy majors and theater kids and tell them to make a bad game? You get Pathologic 2, a game that simultaneously insists upon its own bad design in the name of meaning, yet also implicitly asserts that it has none. I'll start with the redeeming qualities: P2 nails presentation, has SOME interesting dialogue, and has a mysterious world and lore that hook you from the start. That's it. I enjoy "stressful" games; games with stakes that punish losses…

It was only through trial and a lot of error, and a few deaths, that I managed to get to the end. Pathologic 2 is one of those games that I would recommend to everyone, but not to anyone I know in real life. It is a work of artistic expression that the West has never really seen, especially at the level of quality and dedication to minute details. I cannot recommend it to people I know IRL because frankly Pathologic 2 is purely about the narrative first and how the world itself does not care about you, the player. The concept and atmosphere are totally unique and I really enjoyed the first couple of hours, exploring the town and taking in the mix of depressing realism with intriguing surrealist aspects. It feels strange to recommend this considering I never actually finished it, but I have never had an experience like this before with a game. It is truly unique. I left it with only one more day to go, because everything had fallen apart and I felt immensely stressed. Pathologic 2 is perhaps THE BEST apocalyptic game in the recent time. Note that it is NOT "POST-apocalyptic", but a game happens during an apocalypse, meaning you get to experience the progressive desperation of a regular person trying to survive during a plague and I really mean it. The game is in control of you in that you will never be able to achieve a sense of optimization in how you play. It is refreshingly humanizing. The world exists with or without you. You can't focus on the story because you have to constantly search for food and a bed to sleep in, then if you die because of hunger or exhaustion the game becomes much more difficult. I really gave it a go, but ultimately couldn't progress because I got caught in a loop of being broke, tired and hungry. Maybe I didn't get it, I really tried, but the game lost me.

The core message is that suffering and death are inescapable but one can find meaning in them. The problem is that the meaning in the game isn't proportionate to the suffering the player experiences during the game (if the narrative is fully felt). The irony is that the game becomes an anti-pattern for what it's trying to teach the player about: a nihilistic, meta-narrative about how disproportionate suffering is to the joys of life.
