Split verdict: praised for old-school soul, panned for bugs and unfinished state.

Many players praise the game for capturing the old-school RPG feel of Gothic, with rewarding exploration and no hand-holding. One player says it 'scratches that old itch' (R1), while another calls it 'Best Gothic-like since Risen' (R8). [1][8]

However, a significant number of players criticize the game for being buggy and unfinished. One player warns 'DON'T BUY THIS GAME! At least not yet' (R28), and another says 'it is not in release state' (R36). [28][36]

13-year-old me had endless time to beat Gothic II every possible way. 34-year-old me is lucky to squeeze in 1–2 hours of gaming per day on a good week. But I finally found a game that scratches that old itch… even if the journey now comes in tiny, hard-won slices of free time. Cheers Older-GAMERS. I really wanted to like this game. It’s the kind of game where you can feel the passion the devs had for the project, but unfortunately I can’t recommend it. So for you who’s unsure whether you should buy it or not, here’s my quick take: Don’t buy this game yet. Save your money and come back in six months or a year. The game was released, but it’s not complete. In its current state it will give you a few hours of fun and some open-world challenge (a challenge that sometimes borders on unfair…

👍 Recommended (40+ hours played) The Best Aspects Old-school RPG vibes — no quest markers, no hand-holding, just raw exploration. Tristan starts weak but grows into whatever you want: crafting, combat, thievery, alchemy. Factions add replay value: Order & Free Hunters, plus Smugglers, Graverobbers, and Bounty Hunters. Combat is stamina-based and tactical — dodges, parries, and timing matter. Huge world with tons of quests, treasures, and freedom to get lost. Fair price at $30 for the…

After over 60 hours in the game I feel like sharing my thoughts. For context I am 55 and have evolved through all stages of RPG gaming - from Ultima, Elder Scrolls, Gothic and Risen. While I enjoy the modern RPGs, I find that being given a full map, minimap, direction arrows, quest markers, fast travel between any explored areas, etc completely destroys any sort of exploration. Players are rewarded for reaching the quest point as quickly as possible, completing the quest and more often then…

I am not writing reviews very often, mostly I am just supporting games by paying for them. This time I have to make an exception because I have such mixed emotions. Of Ash and Steel provides that kind of exprience I had a long time ago playing Gothic. Tough begining, skipping areas to get back later, happy about any loot found, there is never enough money, etc. In that sense, I really like this game even if there is ton of small bugs (environmental, npc movement, character movement, graphic,…

I am amazed how they were able to create such a great game with a true hardcore Gothic soul! The resemblance is uncanny! I mean you will feel Gothic-soul in everything! Awkward movement, horrible jumping and climbing, poor animations, clumsy combat and terrible terrain, lots of bugs and broken quests. It's like I went back in time really! But we love Gothic for other things: story, exploration, multiple choices. If you're a Gothic fan it's a buy. If not - pass. You will feel physical pain…

So tried the demo and felt it was OK so got the full game on release. Now at 11 hours in, heres my viewpoint: TL:DR 7/10 - good bones but needs some surgery The game is great in some aspects, but severely lacking in others. Pros: - Lots to explore, like LOTS to explore - So many quests, they are everywhere - World feels dangerous, no hand holding here - Old school feel in many regards (this is personal preference but for me its a pro) - Graphics are ok, not amazing but they get by - Voice…

After 86 hours and 100% completion, I really wanted to recommend this game… but I just can’t in its current state. What makes this frustrating is that there is something genuinely special buried in here. You can see the vision. When the combat flows, when a quest gives you just enough information to work things out naturally, when the atmosphere, music and world all click together, the game becomes genuinely immersive in a way very few modern RPGs manage. There were moments where it felt…

Disclaimer: Despite all the flaws I've listed below I still enjoy the game. I will keep playing it and complete it. But here's a few things that you should know before you decide to spend money on it: I wish I could recommend this game, I really do. But I can't. I love the concept, the world, the old school feel without quest markers flooding the map. But the current state of the game makes it disgustingly unplayable. Enjoyed the prologue and took a break after a few hours. Went to try to load my manual save and crashed. Tried the last 3 auto saves. 2 crashed and 1 loaded me back to the prologue area with no inventory and no npc's. DON"T BUY THIS GAME! At least not yet. Wait till the game breaking bugs are fixed. Will adjust my review once the game is playable.

The game is blatantly unfinished. Not in the normal eurojank way, but quests are broken, items vanish from the world, quest progression and dialogue is incomprehensible, and the devs go out of their way to be hostile towards the players. Crossbows don't even work. As in you literally can not fire them once equipped. There are a lot of great ideas and the bones of an amazing RPG under it all, but as it stands the game is fundamentally broken, poorly balanced, and wastes the player's time…

There's a lot "it's Gothic!" rhetoric going on but it is only attempting to be a gothic-like, tho there are questionable game mechanics not just bugs and performance issues, besides some hideous character designs. I did play almost all Gothic/Risen games before (several times, excluding arcania *eurgh* and forsaken gods) and besides the open world feel and janky movement (even worse here) it is a vastly different experience for me, even tho I'm just a couple hours in. - My biggest personal…

I'm so torn! I'm four hours in and if the current narrative and direction of the game is anything to go by, continuing the game will be an absolute pleasure. The characters are so grounded and the voice acting is a pleasure to listen to, I find myself actually listening to them as a posed to skipping dialogue. The combat too is very incrementally slow in terms of progression, but that's a plus in my eyes. However, the bugs in this game seriously diminish it. Crashing, duplication bugs, quest…

I like a game that doesn't treat you like an idiot and hold your hand the entire way through it. The concept is great but the execution is terrible. No floating quest markers, no interactive maps that act like a minigame in itself and no reducing everything down to a checklist. All a great start! However this isn't the real world where you can just ask for directions from any rando or read the signs or use a paper map. Instead, I guess they expect us to memorize this entire city's layout, even…

EDIT: I completed the game. Still do not recommend it because of the atrocious quests. - Combat is fine. Better than what we come to expect from games like these. - Every time you are out in the world exploring and fighting, the game shines. It's actually engaging and fun. Exactly what I was missing and so hard to come by in modern RPGs. - Most of the systems work as intended, crafting and survival is pretty decent. Nothing special, but works ok with the game. - Quests, for the most part, are…

If you're a Gothic veteran or are willing to put in the work, this is the place for you. Otherwise, I hear the sect loonies are taking in anyone. I waited for patch 1.0.6 to review because I couldn't either give it a thumbs up or down. I played for 200h before 1.0.6 and I felt I got far more than my money's worth, but on the other hand there was also a lot of frustration and digging into discord for workarounds to the game's many bugs and issues. There is a solid foundation for a game here, but OMFG, some aspects of the game... jeez! I understand you want to create the illusion that this is one of those old-school games that does without a map, compass, quest markers, and fewer explanations in quest dialogue. But for the sweet love of LIFE, the areas are so huge, empty, and just filler that actually trying to find a specific location is too damn slow. There are so many filler NPCs in crowded areas. what a game! I am in my 50s and love old school RPGs, you start with nothing and a weak character and you build from there. The game is challenging but not unfair. You dont magically get a perfect map or anything given to you. You have to earn it. If you loved Gothic, Risen etc you will love this. but if you want a game to hold your hand from the start then maybe not for you. 9/10

This game has massive potential, but judging by how slowly the devs are fixing even the most obvious problems (like the game freezing when you try to sell items to an NPC whose inventory is already full), I seriously doubt it will ever get properly polished. Right now it is playable, sure, but “playable” is the key word here. You are basically enduring it and trying to force some enjoyment out of it, instead of simply having fun. Because of the low budget (it is obvious at a glance, with…

You can't complete quests because the person that is supposed to be involved isn't there, you can't turn in the items, it bugs out and closes the quest giver interaction. This game is not ready to be considered a "Full release". While Janky systems was what i expected, it is simply too poorly executed, combat needs some more love before it flows properly. Stealing things needs to be clearer, so you don't accidentally loot that one carrot that was flagged as owned. This game has potential but its nowhere near release ready, it should be listed as early access at best. Enemy scaling is painful, introductory quests are missing items, with vanishing npcs. Most city quests can't be completed without using a debug console from modders. For some reason, save files aren't sorted chronologically? It feels like the initial release is the first playtest this game is getting. Revisit in a year, this game could be solid with considerably more time in development.

As of now, this game is confusing Solid voice acting, good writing (as in it gets to the point, just like Gothic), good sense of progression, Ranta mini game is fun But then... Confusing directions - Often times the voice actor says something, but then the subtitles say another, and when you finally get to the place you're stuck going around looking for a random sprite in the ground. It's a hidden jewel that truely hits that nostalgia from Gothic/Risen genre but it's still a big "work in progress". They've launched their game with critical bugs that made your items vanish in your inventory. They fixed that in patch 1.05 but it's still very buggy. A lot of bugcleaning to do.. and not just barkbugs ^^ Really like the game but as long they don't fix the constant crashing when autosaving/quicksaving/etc.. it's a downvote.

No. But it offers a level of difficulty that is missing from modern games. It’s not a 'Soulslike'—it’s harder, because it actually forces you to use your brain. A lot, all the time. It can be frustrating; you’ll fail even when you do everything right. The game constantly pushes you to try harder, explore, and pay attention to every detail. You have to listen—if you’re the…

You can tell a ton of heart and soul went into this game. It's a game without many compromises in terms of feature set and world building. It really takes you back to the magic of old Bethesda RPGs where you could go anywhere and interact with anything. I'd characterize the game as a mid-fantasy world and the best way to describe is if Skyrim and Kingdom Come Deliverance had a child. You start off like Henry, super weak exploring the world and trying to make sense of things, while you have some…

Really enjoyed this one The best part for me was the beginning, playing on hardcore with no map. Getting lost, slowly figuring out the world, trying not to die from every stupid mistake - that was exactly the kind of oldschool RPG experience I wanted :) I would recommend it to people who miss Gothic style games, but maybe wait for a few more patches. On patch 1.07 the game is playable and completable, but there are still small bugs here and there that sometimes mess with the balance and…

Put it back in its not done let it bake properly!!! I have given this game a good chance, i mean its an interesting story well thought but there is just to many bugs and not the (feature) kind, this game has great promise but i really wish the devs would of taken the time to sort everything out in the game before they decided to fully release it.

I am ABSOLUTELY loving this game so far ! I usually tend to avoid giving early reviews for longer rpg games like this, but after only a few hours I can say that this game is a hit for me. I've never played any of the Gothic games before, which apparentely a lot of people claim it's where the game took it's inspiration from. But for me, it weirdly reminded me of Fable ! The progression feels great so far. The optimization is great ( running smootlhy with fps locked at 85, no stutter…

Eurojank? Yes. A bit. But that's part of the charm of these games. The story, dialogue and quests more than make up for it. While i haven't yet had a chance to sink enough time into this to be certain - the opening pieces i have played have been fun and make me excited to sit down and play some more this evening This is one of those wonderful old school RPG games that doesn't do anything to hold your hand. You don't have an easily accessible map with waypoints all over your screen. There…

As a Gothic fan, you can go for it, but it is damn frustrating until you learn to think like an utter idiot. Then it gets easier. I still don't recommend it, but I can give it the high praise of "Marginally better than Demonicon" As any normal person without heavy burden of fandom. Get out ASAP, this is not for you. The problem is that it copies Gothic heavily without understanding Gothic. Why did Gothic restrict your access to cities and you had to work for it? Why was Gothic stat system as…

I'm a dummy for buying this despite the bad reviews. I have a high tolerance for jank and bad combat systems, so I thought I might still be able to appreciate this game. For the jank to be unbearable even for me means that it's very, very bad. The only reason whatsoever to play this game is if you're a hardcore Gothic fan looking for something similar. Clearly, the developers were trying to emulate that series as closely as possible. It does well with all of the superficial elements that make…

Let's be clear: this isn’t a AAA title, and because of that I was prepared to overlook many shortcomings… except for the some deeply frustrating design choices. Here is what i mean: The world actively fights against player orientation. Distinct landmarks are scarce, leading to interchangeable landscapes where it quickly becomes difficult to discern where you are. Repeated building assets compound this issue, and the complete lack of a map - even a basic one - throughout the entire first…

I recognized the music in the game some of it also appears in Elex, made by Piranha Bytes. You can tell it’s a low budget title, but it still manages to capture that Gothic atmosphere, maybe even closer to Risen 1. The environment, the hostility, and the roughness are all there, giving it a distinct charm. Overall, I like it and I’ll keep playing. What I don’t know yet is whether the game includes pickpocketing, since that was one of my favorite mechanics in the Gothic series. If you enjoyed…

Stop to ruin score to this game, this is a classic Gothic game. If you don't like to look around and you need pointers - you don't like Gothic games. Go play Skyrim. This is a hard, but a very nice done open world. Each place in this world has meaning. It is buggy, clumsy, but this reward open world allow to forgive everything to this game.

This game is just not finished yet... I played for around 20 hours and had some fun with it. It is punishing and unforgiving in the early game, which I really enjoyed. You really feel the progression of the character with every level. The world is really immersive and invites exploration. However, there are several points that I want to share with you: 1. Exploration On first glance, this game invites exploration with some neatly placed items or quests in the starting zone. It's a lot of…
