When my wife came home from work, she rewarded my decision by describing the premise in the bluntest terms possible.

unlabelledView post →So much is left up to imagination, CG, in special effects, and camera angles anyway, that it’s usually not very scary or dangerous. I remember hearing that the kids in Mysterious Skin were treated like they were making a completely different movie. No interaction with the abusive character’s actor.

unlabelledView post →Mysterious Skin (2004), Gregg Araki A movie I watched way too young before crawling back to it years later after my own assault. A nauseating bullet that everyone should swallow at least once. Monumentally important that it was made by such an openly proud celebrator of gay sex and love.

unlabelledView post →Mysterious Skin (2004) A brutal, bizarre, unforgettable film about sexual abuse and alien abduction. Trauma has been trivialized and turned into a cliche in recent movies and tv shows, but this tale of trauma has lost none of its potency. Written and directed by Gregg Araki - BOTD in 1959

unlabelledView post →Watching a movie, Mysterious Skin, in a VC with oomfs while playing Uma Musume and this is a strange juxtaposition of emotions... In one tab a tale of horrific sexual abuse of young boys, hauntingly told, and in the other King Halo is trying to jump for bread to win the fan fest, ojou-sama laughing

unlabelledView post →day eight and nine, i missed a day so i'm combining two into one post. Phantom Of The Paradise is required viewing if you're a fan of horror musicals like Rocky Horror. Possum is a horror movie so sad it rivals Fire Walk With Me and like Mysterious Skin is a solid month ruiner.

unlabelledView post →Not an original observation, I know, but… I keep thinking about one of the most common skeptic refutations of alien abduction narratives, of the common read they’re transparent narrativized spins on sexual trauma; something the film Mysterious Skin had made explicit.

unlabelledView post →Basically the complete opposite of that spiritually Mormon sex purge movie. Like a lot of Araki movies, a lot of fun (Mysterious Skin being the obvious exception). I kinda miss the goofiness of his older dialogue but he still has his eye on the ball.
unlabelledView post →Yeah, it's seriously pissing me off that a combination of scheduling and budget constraints means I've had to pass on both Greg Araki films playing the NZ International Film Festival at the moment - I WANT YOUR SEX and a restoration of MYSTERIOUS SKIN (which is a fantastic movie, but neglected).
