My Lucky Stars
Two Hong Kong cops are sent to Tokyo to catch an ex-cop who stole a large amount of money in diamonds. After one is captured by the Ninja-gang protecting the rogue cop, the other one gets his old Orphanage gang, dubbed the "Five Lucky Stars," to help him. They don't like this much, but they do it. It's a Sammo Hung directed Sammo Hung action comedy showpiece and my god is it fun fun fun fun. And crass and eye-rollingly off-color. But fun!

unlabelledView post →Those are the two standouts of the set by a huge margin tbh but My Lucky Stars is good (it is a Sammo Hung movie really, Jackie is not in it that much, but it's fun) and I think Spiritual Kung Fu is very underrated.
unlabelledView post →Always good to see more Jackie Chan from Criterion, but what an odd selection of titles. Fearless Hyena II, in particular, was apparently a blatant exploitation by Lo Wei of an unfinished film and My Lucky Stars isn't really much of a Jackie Chan film; he's in it, but not in a starring role...
unlabelledView post →Watched My Lucky Stars last night and even though this was in the Jackie Chan Criterion set, this is definitely a Sammo Hung movie. This now might be one my favorite fights in a movie though, the fucking flex is phenomenal.

unlabelledView post →Watched My Lucky Stars, probably the best example of a Hong Kong stunt team and some amazingly shot and directed fight scenes absolutely carrying a movie. So many filler scenes in the middle with alot of dated comedy again, but the final 30 minutes are just really entertaining.
unlabelledView post →Although bad luck had forced Jackie Chan's Meals on Wheels (1984) to be known as Wheels on Meals, this didn't stop My Lucky Stars (1985) from becoming the highest-grossing Hong Kong film, or Jackie having the courage to do Mr. Canton and Lady Rose (a 1989 film a.k.a. Miracles).

unlabelledView post →My Lucky Stars also good even though it's not a pure Jackie Chan movie: it's an ensemble cast made up mostly of dudes who were part of the Peking Opera School. Stunts were also coordinated by Yuen Wah (Landlord from Kung Fu Hustle who is also an alum)
