60 of 192 · most liked firstHonestly if the developer turned off permadeath by default and made it optional, I think they would see MUCH more commercial success with this game. But 99% of the reasons I didn't like it ended up being because of permadeath. Combat feels like an absolute dumpster fire. You'll throw one projectile that bounces 6 times off every object in the room and then something explodes and insta-kills your character. That happens all the time. That comes off as "hahaha so funny and quirky" when you're…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This little gem surprised me. I hadn't heard anything about it and randomly ran across it, and I'm glad I picked it up! The game play loop is easy and quick, but that doesn't mean it's not fun. It's easy to pick up and spend some time in, but thankfully the short levels make the growth and development not fee like a chore. There are some unexpected gameplay twists, like how your team members can get captured and you have to go rescue them, but the game is actually enjoyable. The items…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is frustrating and not fun at all, which is a shame, i will keep at it for now but i seem to just keep dying lol and as a result not moving the game forward.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fredo's Game-Os: Mr. Sun's Hatbox This one was a pleasant surprise - I know it had a bit of a following but had not checked it out until a recent humble bundle. It's a very interesting, a kinda MGS-like with the mechanics of something like spelunky.
unlabelledView post →We are really having fun with this co-op base builder. It's got all the fun of building out an X-COM style base with light platforming ( and heavy humor ) instead of turn-based tactics. Just got started on it, but it seems well worth the money, as there seems to be a lot of content to yet unlock. The developer has an extensive Itch.io page, with a lot of prototypes of their other ideas. Well worth checking it out. I enjoy seeing an indie developer who "throws a lot of spaghetti at the wall to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Go on mini adventures where you collect new weapons and gear, while trying to level up your minions. Risk+reward with character permadeath. Really addictive gameplay loop. Despite the crude pixel graphics, it's quite charming and hard to stop playing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A decent roguelite platformer let down by its core gameplay loop and frenetic, frustrating combat. An XCom-like hub serves as your base-building foundation, which unfortunately has just too many systems in place to keep interest in the long term. Admittedly so because the game includes an auto-fill feature so you don't have to do it yourself. The key selling feature for me [the reason I bought it] - Co-op - is ultimately lacking in fun. The permadeath feature of the game means that the stakes…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a stealth roguelike platformer with base building and metaprogression, featuring permadeath for your "operatives" similar to Watch Dogs: Legion on its hardest difficulty, the ability to use a Fulton extraction system like in Metal Gear Solid, and plenty of other mechanics besides. It's hard to think of another game that combines all of these ideas into such a cohesive package. There are a few rough edges in the controls and UI/UX, but you get used to them quickly. Highly recommended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game rocks. It's basically Metal Gear Solid V's gameplay reduced to it's very core. In case that means nothing to you, you enter a stage, kill, kidnap and loot as much as you can, run away, repeat. I'ts really fun. Between the stages, you hang out in your base, using the kidnapped dudes and stolen resources to make yourself and your base stronger. It's a very rewarding loop. After ~10 hours, I had mastered the gameplay, and thing began to become a bit stale, as unfortunately the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →4/10 i played 41 days and it hardly evolved. same things over and over - combat is bad - you can hurt or stun yourself with weapons you use such as a grenade launcher that clips the corner of a shelf and comes back at you or a single throw of a boomerang - god awful mobile game grind to slowly unlock new things. not the worst ive seen, but its bad - i hate the send item home system. snake hat only way to send it home is to take it off. it takes so long to send it home that the snake bites me…

unlabelledView post →Terrible optimization, game gets extremely slow every time the alarm goes off (like really!!!?????? in a 16-bit game??). Furthermore, if there is a crash, which will happen thanks to the many bugs never fixed, and you are on a run with full party (7 characters), they will all die; all that leveling and keeping-your-characters alive effort for nothing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's addictive and fun, but I can see why some folks don't like it all that much. But I think it's something that you can work around. So the problem some folks have is that essentially, there is a lot of chaos going on. The longer you play, the worse it gets, in a given save file, especially if you keep getting more magic hats. It is possible to get the magic hats before you have really mastered the skills leading up to it, and if you do that, then you'll wind up losing like 80% of the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm absolutely blown away. This incredibly deep stealth playground was made by a solo dev. Explains why he put his name on the box. Think of Metal Gear Solid V's immersive-sim stealth mechanics: sneaking missions with lots of tools, balloon-extraction of knocked-out enemies, mission rewards for no-alarms and no-kills, and a base full of everything you carried home or balloon-extracted. Now add the silly physics of Duck Game, where there's tools like slippery banana peels and accidental deaths!…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game edges on being -really- fun. The gameplay is almost solid, unfortunately, too many things can go wrong, jumping can trigger a dozen of horrible reactions that will doom you extremely easily, some of the levels you can go to are simply too much of a gamble for no more reward than the more straightforward ones. I do not mind difficulty, and chaos can be fun, but most of the time I die, I have this dejected feeling that the death was unfair and unfun. At its best, Mr Sun's HatBox is a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My nephew and I love this game. Silly enough for him to enjoy yet tactical enough to keep my attention. Every time we find a new hat that lets you infinitely bounce around the room it's a great experience. Frog too strong
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spelunky with hats, base management, and the best feature from MGS V.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Right, so here's a game about a delivery man who loses a hat. That's it. That's the inciting incident. Somewhere a writer pitched "what if FedEx, but you can die," got a development budget, and nobody in the room stood up and left. Bold. Let's be fair, because I'm nothing if not fair. It is, technically, functional art - and I want to stress the functional part, because nobody could accuse it of being pretty. It's ugly. Charmingly ugly, sure, ugly with a personality, the way a pug is ugly and…

unlabelledView post →There is a lot to like about this game, however it is pretty frustrating that you can lose one of your favorite guys in 5 seconds of bad play. I suppose that if you like Perma-death In your meta-rogues, this is not going to be a problem for you and you can enjoy this game more than I did. To be clear I think it's a very well done game, I just don't like building up a character only to have them die because I made a couple of bad decisions in quick order.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's like the sandbox and discovery aspects of Heat Signature mixed with the chaos of Duck Game and the structure of Cult of the Lamb and if you don't know what any of those parts mean for those games, then find a different better review
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hate stealth games but in Hatbox despite it being optional(Hard to say no to +200% xp on top of +150% for not killing) I always try and enjoy doing it the sneaky way. Things can go to heck REALLY fast and wide variety of hats and weapons gives you a lot of options to tackle the levels and different guards with their resistances and weaknesses.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried liking this game, but between enemies randomly deciding they have spotted you from off your screen with normal view, and enemies just deciding that you die now, it's just not fun.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Graphics and sound design are good. Gameplay is difficult enough that it's a good challenge, having you need to adapt to your character's traits, positive and negative, while giving multiple ways to tackle levels, but it can feel a bit confusing/unfair, with all the traits, items, and hats you need to keep track of with relatively fast paced gameplay. The biggest thing I feel the need to say against the game though, and it's a big one that makes it feel genuinely upsetting to play, is the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has the bones of something good, but everything around those bones is grindy and frustrating
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Adorable and rude. Mr. Sun's Hatbox is Spelunky with the sharp edges sanded off to a smooth finish. You play a little Isaac delivery man who lost a package/hat and needs to return it. And in order to do so you need to XCOM the receiver's basement with building upgrades. Then you are off doing retrieval, delivery, abduction, and kill missions to earn upgrades and steps towards endgame. Every hat is your armor, every weapon is your tool for mayhem. And like Spelunky, this game will fly off the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute, fun game, and just the right length. Very very light story, but funny, and better for it. It combines a tight 2d-platformer with Xcom-style base construction between levels to let you manage, power-up, and equip your units. The platforming has significant difficulty (though there are settings you can turn down). There are a ton of hats and weapons with powers that are well-thought-out and fun. Levels can be tackled with violence, stealth, or a combination of both. Overall the best…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Creative, goofy, frustrating. This game has a few basic mechanics at the core (Jump on head to knockout, hat protects from that once) and enemies can do everything you can do. There are lots of hats that modify those mechanics in creative ways (like squishy hats that prevent your hat being removed by jumping on you). There's also lots of weapons to attack with that can bypass hats. The game's is fun. What's not very fun is unpredictable deaths costing characters (permanent death) that takes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game really doesn't work for me. Annoying "missions", combat is just weird, it's unclear what you need to do and what you can take and what the effects are.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game have so much potential, except the developer kinda just stopped updating it, despite less than a year since it was released... Fun game, sure, but the lack of new updates kinda kills it for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mr Sun's Hatbox is a solid platforming rogue-lite with a fun base building. The story is fun and entertaining and i enjoyed the exchanges with Mr Sun. I didn't try the co-op but the base game itself was a blast to play through solo and getting 100% of the achievements was fun. Overall I would strongly recommend this game and for the price it is absolutely worth it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got a bit of time off work and decided after watching Northernlion play this on his stream that it looked worthwhile. Ladies and Gentlemen, this game is exceptional. It's 2d platforming mixed with the base building and goofy as hell mechanics of Metal Gear Solid 5. I went from steam rolling through the game to having my best character slip on a bar of soap, get shot, and then finish his knockback animation into a medkit that then killed him due to one of his negative quirks. 10/10. Can't praise…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This a really fun little title, it takes a good core concept and executes it well rather than trying to do too much at once. It won't change your life forever, but this has a fun gameplay loop, with very nice couch co-op to play with up to 4 people, that my partner and I have been enjoying it a lot. You really NEED to become comfortable with the concept of perma-death though. It's highly upsetting, but I've not at any point felt like the loss of one character was crippling or game ender, so…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Would have been 10 out of 10 for me if it had Online co-op
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great unique fun! Artwork and gameplay are great! Lots of upgrades and variety! One more mission!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The "story" can be completed in like 4-5 hours as all you need is 5 crowns and then the final stage. The gameplay is super super fun though and the varying skills and level difficulties keep things interesting... Where the game falls off is newgame+ onward. After you complete the final stage on a regular save, it locks you out and forces you to accept a new game +. So what is newgame+, just makes things harder right??? For some unholy reason they thought that there should be a rent-based…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game feels bit like Spelunky, but with a somewhat worse gameplay with a plethora of hats and items to swap. Hats are essentially passive skills. +Aesthetics, functional art +Player choice +Risk/reward -> perma death for your very expendable characters +Base building as a roguelite progression / metagame ---UX/UI is messy - things get on each other and the core loop of capturing, picking up, swapping gear etc is completely slowed down with things stacking on top of each other forcing slow…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have never had so many deaths that were followed by me saying "what the ♥♥♥♥ happened?!" There's a basis for a good game here, but.. too many times have things seemed to be going well and then I'm suddenly dead, losing everything and having no idea why. Fk this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wasn't for me. Controls feel a bit weird and I should've tried to remap them really and I'd suggest that for anyone who wants to play it. It also has a difficulty that doesn't feel very fun to me. A lot of chaos that can be tough to follow and not always feel like your fault when you get hit. The game is cute though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A Kenny Sun game? Instant buy. Mr Sun's Hatbox did the impossible and was a video game that was actually funny. (As well as a damn good little unique roguelike.)
unlabelledView post →This is a silly stealth action game that's lots of fun in small bites. Fair warning, it's possible to slow down your progress through the game accidentally! Play smart (like the behatted spy you dream to be).

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mr. Sun’s Hatbox, developed by Kenny Sun and published by Raw Fury, is a creative 2D platformer that expertly blends stealth, action, and strategic management into a cohesive and engaging package. Released in 2023, the game revolves around the quest to recover a stolen hatbox, but it quickly evolves into a series of diverse and unpredictable missions that challenge players’ reflexes, planning skills, and adaptability. Its combination of quirky humor, imaginative world design, and dynamic…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mr. Sun's Hatbox is the rare breed of game that doesn't over stay it's welcome, has an interesting design and executed it well. It's an under appreciated game that has a lot more going on than it's visuals and surprisingly low recognition would suggest. A great modern rogue-like that's absolutely worth checking out.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun and cute roguelite platformer. Lots of neat little interactions between your pre-run preparation (hats and such) and the goofy stuff that can happen during a run. I enjoyed doing a full campaign and finally returning the box to Mr. Sun. Good weekend game for me. I might replay it again one day on a higher difficulty.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →got this from a bundle a while ago, did not expect it to be metal gear solid v 2
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The mechanics are really good and entertaining, though taken from Metal Gear Peace Walker (and V) they are well implemented and with a twist. Lovely and engaging game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this is surprisingly good and addictive. 2d metal gear, with lots of fun and wierd equipments. Some achievements though are going to be pain in my poopoo-hole, so I don't really think that I am going to 100% cheevo it. upd: I did 100% cheevos
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mr. Sun's Hatbox is actually super fun, and it's enthralling if you've got someone to play the couch co-op with. The game is surprisingly deep and supports many different styles of play. While you can make strategic decisions to avoid virtually every instant-kill in the game, it plays far better if you're milling an endlessly growing army of lil' dudes through the meat grinder built from your own ineptitude.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun game. A little bit of XCOM/MGS5 Base building mixed with the best silly parts from MGS5's stealth mechanics in a 2D rogue-lite. All of the missions are very short making it a great pickup and play game. Would be amazing on Steam Deck.
