Midnight Express
Billy Hayes is caught attempting to smuggle drugs out of a country. The courts decide to make an example of him, sentencing him to more than 30 years in prison. Hayes has two opportunities for release: the appeals made by his lawyer, his family, and the American government, or the "Midnight Express". From TMDB

It'll be interesting to see how the ramped up brutality of the US state will change perceptions.

I've often thought of that film as I traveled to *other* countries. That exceptionalism is gone.

Fantastic performances all the way around, and the movie makes you feel like you're in a grimy old Turkish prison right alongside the main character. Tough to watch, but outstanding.

He's been starving himself, sleeping as little as possible, doing everything he can to get in the mindset of an inmate at a brutal prison, but still isn't satisfied with his performance. Meeting a Hollywood icon and one of his idols, he asks Olivier for advice. Olivier looks down his glasses at his and says "well son,…
