After moving to a new town, troublemaking teen Jim Stark is supposed to have a clean slate, although being the new kid in town brings its own problems. While searching for some stability, Stark forms a bond with a disturbed classmate, Plato, and falls for local girl Judy. However, Judy is the girlfriend of neighborhood tough, Buzz. When Buzz violently confronts Jim and challenges him to a drag race, the new kid's… From TMDB

unlabelledView post →We just watched -Goodfellas-. 35 years. It’s a movie made 35 years ago. JFC. If I were watching a 35-year-old film when -Goodfellas- was in theatres, it would be -Rebel Without a Cause-. I’m gonna have to pick out my casket and cemetery plot next week.
unlabelledView post →Watched The Breakfast Club with the family on kid’s request. Delightfully, achingly dated now, in a way that reminded me of how I felt watching Rebel Without A Cause for the first time. Which I now realise I did in 1995. When that film was as old as the Breakfast Club is now. Sheesh.
unlabelledView post →Important film history here. They Hays code was so strict and *evil* that as @mattbaume.bsky.social points out in his great documentary on REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, the Hays Code approved of the film having a gay character because the he gets gunned down by police at the end, considered a just ending.

His breakout role in Ray's "Rebel Without a Cause"(1955) is often cited as the first "gay" teen on film

unlabelledView post →I especially love the way the writer keeps going on about James Dean in "Rebel Without A Cause," CLEARLY MISSING THE POINT OF THE ENTIRE FUCKING MOVIE. Also the fact that Dean was criticized (including by his own father) as being insufficiently macho at the time.
unlabelledView post →I think part of the problem (if it is one) is the rise of disposable clothing. We had a lot fewer clothes in the past. Our old ones were for hanging about the house, and our newer ones were for being seen in. Even if you look at an old movie, like Rebel Without a Cause, the t-shirts are well made

He began acting as a young man and achieved immediate success. Sadly, he was killed in a car crash at the tender age of 24. #JamesDean

Rebel Without a Cause changed my life, and I even knew that was the case when I was first watching it on repeat at thirteen years old. Here's some writing on the film for @letterboxd.social: letterboxd.com/cmnewland/fi...

"Death Of A Cockroach", of course, is about the death of a cockroach. Its parenthetical title comes from a bit of dialog from the film "Rebel Without A Cause".
