Matthew 5:16
Scripture
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:16 (NIV)
(Other translations: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” — KJV)
Reflection
Jesus has just called His followers “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). Light is never meant to be hidden under a basket—it exists to push back darkness and reveal what is true and good. In the same way, your life is not meant to blend into the shadows of this world. The light you carry is not your own brilliance, personality, or achievements. It is the light of Christ living in you through the Holy Spirit.
When you let that light shine through good deeds—acts of kindness, integrity, forgiveness, compassion, honesty, and love—people don’t just see you. They see evidence of a heavenly Father who is good, generous, and worthy of praise. The ultimate goal is never self-promotion or earning applause. It’s that others would glorify God because of what they observe in your life.
This is both a great privilege and a sober responsibility. In a world full of darkness, confusion, and self-focus, a quiet, consistent Christian life that reflects Jesus stands out like a city on a hill. Your words, your work ethic, how you treat people who can’t repay you, how you respond to difficulty, and how you love even when it’s hard—these become the visible “good works” that point straight to heaven.
Today, on Divine Mercy Sunday, remember that the light you shine flows directly from the mercy you’ve received. The same risen Jesus who showed His wounds to Thomas and brought peace to fearful disciples wants to shine through your healed and forgiven life.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for calling me out of darkness and into Your marvelous light. Today I choose not to hide the light You’ve placed in me. Help me live in such a way that my words, actions, and attitudes reflect Your goodness. Let every good work I do today—whether big or small—cause people to look past me and see You. May they glorify You, my Father in heaven.
Fill me afresh with the light of Christ so that I walk in mercy, humility, and boldness. Keep my motives pure: not for my glory, but for Yours alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Today’s Challenge
Look for at least one intentional way to let your light shine today. It could be:
- A kind word or act of service no one expects
- Choosing integrity when it would be easier to cut a corner
- Responding with grace in a tense situation
- Sharing the reason for your hope when someone notices your peace
Then, quietly give God the glory in your heart. Let your light shine—not so others will praise you, but so they will praise Him.
May your day be bright with the presence of Jesus, and may many see His light through you.
Blessings on this Lord’s Day. ✝️”
