The film (and book) are considered less than authentic depictions of geisha lifestyle and the film mired itself in controversy. Nonetheless, both the novel and film were successful. 👘🏯🍶 #filmsky #booksky

unlabelledView post →By far the funniest movie to have gotten an official UMD release and to imagine someone actually watching on a PSP is Memoirs of a Geisha

unlabelledView post →Film, too, has mythologized fall leaves. Think of crimson maples in Memoirs of a Geisha, or the golden cascade in Hero. Leaves become more than background. They are silent characters of fate. #LegendaryWednesday Art: Ven Gogh

unlabelledView post →Memoirs of a Geisha would have been the one but that movie has too much baggage and I would feel too hard-pressed to over-explain myself (like I am now) as to why it's an inspiration to me while also acknowledging how historically incorrect it is. lol.
unlabelledView post →I was young so maybe I'm misremembering, but I felt like "Memoirs of a Geisha" got a huge push in 2005, and the actual movie release kind of killed it? Got some minor noms & an okay box office, then nothing. I don't see any "underrated" or "let's dunk on this" chatter, not even a "remember this?"
unlabelledView post →Memoirs of a Geisha has the best cum snatch put to film.
unlabelledView post →this tweet is 20 yrs late but: in a rather mid movie, Gong Li slays the boots house down in Memoirs of a Geisha
unlabelledView post →Memoirs of a Geisha is a great movie and even better book.. It's definitely in my personal library.
unlabelledView post →@cosmic-stardust.bsky.social and I do a weekly movie night and I love how it shows how different we are. She showed me Memoirs of a Geisha, I'm showing her Blade Runner.
unlabelledView post →RIP Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa Among his many roles, he also starred in Picture Bride, a 1994 film also starring one of my fave actors, Yuki Kudoh (a standout as Pumpkin in Memoirs of a Geisha). It wasnt a huge hit but is a story worth having a look at.
unlabelledView post →Not a concert, but I was at a screening of the movie Memoirs of a Geisha where a fight actually broke out in the seats.
unlabelledView post →I don't think that way with books. Truthfully some of my favorite books were extremely discounted. Memoirs of a Geisha, for example, and 4 years later, someone decided it'd make a great movie. It did, and now it's full price again.
unlabelledView post →My #2 favorite movie is Memoirs of a Geisha. I’ve also read the book which I recommend since there are some key differences that the movie portrays. #gtkm #movies
unlabelledView post →Hated walking into a local Barnes & Noble many many years ago to be greeted with a display of 'Memoirs of a Geisha', except with the movie poster (look it up) as the cover.
unlabelledView post →I was disappointed by AI telling me that my Terminator 2, Chatmed, and Memoirs of a Geisha film posters that have real-looking autographs are most likely faked by getting a machine to do the signatures. They only advertised about 3 of each, so they could have been genuine. Still, nice posters.
unlabelledView post →Yeah, it's surprisingly well done for an American movie. I was afraid it would be like "Memoirs of a Geisha" or "Last Samurai" stuff but it's very artsy. More people should watch it.
unlabelledView post →True, I’m not Japanese. However, I’ve loved the culture since I was 10. My mom raised me with Asian philosophies. I also read Memoirs of a Geisha, so I know what not to do while writing. (To be fair, the book is more accurate to geisha etiquette than the film. That’s not saying much, but still.)
unlabelledView post →It's genuinely dumbfounding how a film by the director of Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Mary Poppins Returns can look this cheap. And it's the same cinemtographer he's been working with since Chicago. Even On Stranger Tides still looks expensive.
unlabelledView post →I wanted to choose a movie at random to watch after work, so I picked Memoirs of a Geisha and WOW... 🫠 Some Choices were made, huh... I mean WOWWW...
unlabelledView post →Also, you want to read a bigger hot take? I think Naomi Watts gave a better performance in King Kong than at least 4 of the nominated performances. And shoutout to Zhang Ziyi in Memoirs of a Geisha. I know that movie has received a lot of valid criticisms, but I always thought she was very good.
unlabelledView post →It was this movie that got me absolutely hooked on Asian films. It was so much fun. My favorite Asian film is Memoirs of a Geisha, directed by Rob Marshall. Ziyi Zhang was incredible in this film, as she has been in so many others. And no one can match the acting skill of Michelle Yeoh.
unlabelledView post →I didn’t see it but it sounds like @mattschley.com ‘s assessment that it was successful largely in the way Memoirs of a Geisha was describes it well. On soundtracks, I think K’s model of a perfect soundtrack is Silence (the Scorsese film, not actual silence, though also a lot of actual silence).
unlabelledView post →For pumping up: DKM and Flogging Molly have been on repeat. Sprinkle a little System of a Down and Metallica in there for good measure. For calmness: a lot of film score. Ennio Morricone spaghetti westerns are good as well as Memoirs of a Geisha and LOTR.

unlabelledView post →yes, it is. I questioned myself one day back in 2004 about buying a signed library copy of Memoirs of a Geisha in a used bookstore. Movie came out a year? later. I won't tell you how much I've been offered now but I will tell you that $10 i spent was worth it.

unlabelledView post →Memoirs of a Geisha The book I believe came out in 1997 and I remember a good friend giving me a copy. Ended up watching the movie when it came out in 2005.
unlabelledView post →I agree she is very attractive. Omg, I freaking love that movie. I really loved her and Michelle Yeoh in Memoirs of a Geisha, too. She's been in a ton of good things.
unlabelledView post →"There is no credible information to suggest that Arthur Golden is a pervert; however, he was involved in a lawsuit with a geisha named Mineko Iwasaki for defamation-" Look, I love the movie Memoirs of a Geisha(read: daddy issues), but every year it gets harder to ignore its red flags.
unlabelledView post →How could I forget how great a movie, "Memoirs of a Geisha" is.
unlabelledView post →Just a few... there are more, but I truly enjoyed these (years are book publication date first then movie release date): ◇ The Last Unicorn (1968 / 1982) ◇ Three Thousand Years of Longing (1994 / 2022) ◇ Memoirs of a Geisha (1997 / 2005) ◇ Uglies (2005 / 2024)

Lets talk about how many times you've watched BOTH season 1 & season 2 of Arcane. Me: ...Yeah we both know its well over 6 times. SO: More than 16 even.

unlabelledView post →I always get so excited to share my tattoos. They're my babies. 😆 The text is a line from my favorite movie, Memoirs of a Geisha. I got it to celebrate moving into my career, finally not living paycheck to paycheck, and spending a year focusing on myself.
unlabelledView post →Because most white people don't know shit. Why did a bunch of Chinese actresses speak in English in a "Japanese" accent in Memoirs of a Geisha? That movie drives me insane.
unlabelledView post →I saw the movie years ago now I am reading Memoirs of a Geisha
unlabelledView post →Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) Watched on the plane home. Didn‘t know much going in. Extremely uncomfortable movie that ultimately ends up glorifying and celebrating grooming and exploitation. It is beautifully shot though so I‘ll give it that. 3/10
unlabelledView post →Every so often I'm reminded of the scene in Memoirs of a Geisha (book, not film) where Mother stuck her hand into her obi, squeezing the pouch of tobacco, worrying about war rations and availability. I'm not sure why 🙃
unlabelledView post →Memoirs of a Geisha??? If you like either a long game romance, Japanese culture, coming of age (ish), drama vibes this is a fantastic movie!
unlabelledView post →There's so many good ones out there that don't get the fame that they should have The movie Shadows with the playing of the light just just beautiful I'm again watching Memoirs of a Geisha tonight.. The choreography is hypnotizing
unlabelledView post →My favourite film of all time is Memoirs of a Geisha
unlabelledView post →I did that with Memoirs of a Geisha, and I couldn’t enjoy the movie because it didn’t even slightly live up to the book imo
unlabelledView post →Memoirs of a Geisha (US Box office): $57,490,508 The Last Samurai (US box office): $111.1 million Granted TLS had action in it, and Tom Cruise, but I don't knwo if that's enough to account for doing double the movie about Japanese culture and history focused on the Japanese POV.
unlabelledView post →Memoirs of a Geisha The main actress in this movie wasn't Japanese, she was Chinese. And her love interest was Dr Serizawa from the Monsterverse
unlabelledView post →Stop telling people to read before they see the movie. Let people enjoy shit their own way. I’ve never seen Memoirs of a Geisha; because I DID read and then see the movie Pay It Forward. That movie was such a bastardization that it ruined the book for me; I’ll not let that happen to memoirs.
unlabelledView post →How is Memoirs of a Geisha as a book? The movie brought me to tears & also an intense place of joy?!? Was a strange, but lovely experience.
unlabelledView post →Memoirs of a Geisha is a very 2000s Asian centered movie created by Hollywood, where as long as the actor was Asian it was good enough. The questionable casting of Chinese (and a Korean-American) actors in a WW2 era movie aside, the decision to "Americanize" (1/2)
