The Last Samurai
Nathan Algren is an American hired to instruct the Japanese army in the ways of modern warfare, which finds him learning to respect the samurai and the honorable principles that rule them. Pressed to destroy the samurai's way of life in the name of modernization and open trade, Algren decides to become an ultimate warrior himself and to fight for their right to exist. From TMDB

unlabelledView post →Ken Watanabe's character was the Last Samurai. Did you see the film?

unlabelledView post →Their wait paid off in the mid 19th century. Remember The Last Samurai and how it was a battle between the supporters of the shogun and the Emperor? That movie is trash but the conflict happened and women fought in it. Nakano Takeko led a group of female warriors called the Joshitai (Women's Corps).

unlabelledView post →I'm not sure The Last Samurai is a GREAT movie -- it might be too much of an Edward Zwick white-man-saves-history movie for that -- but I like it. Watched it a lot when I was younger. It mostly stands up imo. Mostly.
unlabelledView post →This was as much a fan service movie as was "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" Just because you didn't enjoy it doesnt mean it was bad. It was 1000x times better than the borefests from James Cameron and his 10 foot alien "Ferngully: Dances With The Last Samurai Of The Mohicans" movies.
unlabelledView post →Me too, because its been a while since any of my students have seen "The Last Samurai" and I need a new Hollywood film to deconstruct! :)
unlabelledView post →Coming soon: @aggressiveazeri.bsky.social and I rifftrax "The Last Samurai." Details to follow, but just so you know: this was a movie I saw in freshman year of college and loved it. Now, 21 years later, I have a doctorate in this era of Japanese history, and uh....hm. Torment. Much torment.
unlabelledView post →I don’t remember the movie super well but I feel like probably the non-samurai in The Last Samurai had a point
unlabelledView post →I watched the first Avatar movie and was so unimpressed that I've refused to watch the others. Yes, the visuals are great, and I can understand why some love it, but I have no intention of watching four more variations of "Ferngully: Dances With The Last Samurai Of The Mohicans."
unlabelledView post →I don't hate anyone for their fave movie :) And The Last Samurai is good. When I think of classic Samurai, I think of Harakari, Throne of Blood, Yojimbo, Samurai Assassin, The Seven Samurai. B & W, 1950s and 1960s Japanese films. Something with some emotional weight balancing the action.
unlabelledView post →#NowWatching The Last Samurai (2003), dir: Edward Zwick. It's been a while, but I love this film. Some really beautiful cinematography, plus Hiroyuki Sanada is just awesome.

unlabelledView post →lmao the Avatar discourse is 100% right, i saw the first movie and it left such a bad taste in my mouth as a kid that i still haven't watched The Last Samurai or Dances with Wolves lmao
unlabelledView post →The Last Samurai (2003) this film is usually considered historical fiction, buy an hour in i know it’s actually a sci-fi film with the premise: what if Tom Cruise Travelled back in time to 19th century Japan?
unlabelledView post →Bit late to the party but here's a general gist of movies/shows, etc that I got into in 2025 that I really liked. Got back into a movie mood over anime last year. Excluded rewatches, otherwise I would have put stuff like Gundam 00, IBO and The Last Samurai here as much as I enjoyed revisiting them.
unlabelledView post →I had never before thought of The Muppets Take Manhattan as a White Savior movie a la Dances With Wolves or The Last Samurai, but Kermit's amnesia & assimilation into the native population of white-collar advertisers before eventually rejoining the Muppets & their native lady guide does fit...
unlabelledView post →A Tom Cruise movie I appreciate is The Last Samurai, because it's supposed to be a Tom Cruise movie, but he got out-movie-starred so badly by Ken Watanabe and Hiroyuki Sanada that it launched their careers in the West.
unlabelledView post →Yeah, "The Last Samurai" is easily my most hated movie ever and I honestly don't enjoy "Shogun."
unlabelledView post →Management at the supermarket did not take this seriously until one day during the filming of ‘The Last Samurai’ — the 100% historically accurate movie which showed how a white man (Tom Cruise) saved Japan.
unlabelledView post →I get to catch up with Jen & Sarah from @moviesanduspod.bsky.social next week! We will be talking The Last Samurai as we get closer to them joining the show to revise 2003. What do you think of this Tom Cruise film? #movies #filmsky
unlabelledView post →For Father’s Day, a movie that makes me think of my dad is The Last Samurai. I have a fond memory of us on an out-of-town trip when I was thirteen and going to see this movie. Good flick.
unlabelledView post →Time to watch The Last Samurai (I’ve lost count how many times). Say what you want about Tom Cruise usually being cast in the same or similar roles in his catalogue, but he’s very good in this and the movie overall is exceptional (IMHO). Hope everyone has enjoyed the start of 2025 🙏🏾❤️

unlabelledView post →Helen DeWitt’s The Last Samurai (no relation to the awful Tom Cruise film) has been my favourite novel since high school. In the mid-2000s I bought her self-published PDF follow-up, YOUR NAME HERE, from her website which then vanished into publishing hell. It’s finally coming out for real.

unlabelledView post →I have never read Helen De Witt and realised today I probably haven't because I thought her The Last Samurai novel was the basis of the Tom Cruise film of the same name. It isn't.
unlabelledView post →Whilst it’s obviously not a “great” (or even samurai) movie, I bet The Last Samurai would make a very entertaining episode

unlabelledView post →#NowWatching The Last Samurai (2003) Although only based on some historical events, with fictitious characters, I still love this movie. The samurai face off in their final showdown against a changing Japan now changing war strategy with the use of guns. 3.5/5 ⭐ #filmsky #moviesky
