I definitely didn't understand this game in 1999. I bought it, hoping for Secret of Mana but better. It's not that. I kind of liked it, but didn't really get it. I felt like, despite wandering around a lot, I probably missed a lot. But I also had no idea what I missed or how to do things differently. So I'm not sure I ever played it a second time. Playing the remaster, though, I loved it. The updated storybook graphics are perfect. The gameplay experience is almost unique, even compared to…

My negative review is to bring visibility to this game not working on Steam Decks. There are misleading posts and videos claiming otherwise (from people who've played for less than 2 minutes), but if you enter into combat, the game will freeze. Period. The only solution is to delete all the audio files and play in silence. No thanks. Hoping this gets fixed someday.

Before everything was available online, some games were made with the express purpose of selling guides, magazines, or driving sales to phone tip lines. No game better embodies this strategy than Legend of Mana. This game is essentially unusable without a guide, and not just because of surface-level issues like convoluted dialogue decisions (à la Persona) or necessary boss tricks. Everything you do affects something else. The level of consideration required for whom you talk to, when you talk…

So Legend of Mana is a weird one, and I tried to like it, but in the end I just can't. It's pretty, the soundtrack is amazing and it has a certain charm, but the gameplay is broken. The approach of this game feels extremly nonsensical in it's structure and presentation of stories and dialouge. With a guide you can smooth out a lot of the problems, but the weird presentation of the story is something you either like or dislike. It also has some performance issues. Positves: + Music,…

It breaks my heart to write this. Legend of Mana is my favorite game of all time. I absolutely adore it. And this remaster has destroyed it. It's incredibly buggy and unstable to the point of being unplayable. I really hope they will fix this and release an update, but from other reviews it seems it's been broken a long time so I'm not getting my hopes up.

This game means so much to me. It is really difficult for me to be objective about it. My current playthrough would be the fifth time in my life I will have completed Legend of Mana and whoops I missed an early quest so I guess I will have to do a sixth playthrough down the line to get the achievement for doing all the quests in one run. I think this game's story was really misunderstood by the Western market when it first came out. Its episodic structure and collection of deeply poignant…

TLDR: ROSE TINTED GLASSES The original game was pretty fun in 1999, some serious nostalgia to be had here. The remaster specifically is very well done, from the graphics to the soundtrack - everything was so good before and as a remaster is even better. The problem and reason I can't recommend this game is because the backbone foundation of this game as an action rpg is just incredibly archaic. Character movement is very slow unless you use a fast weapon. The enemy AI and ally NPC AIs can't…

I feel bad for SE, because I know the team worked hard to repaint the backgrounds. But I miss the old look. Even though it's jarring at first, I'm happy that they kept the original sprites. I'm grateful that they give the option to use the original soundtrack and not exclusively the arranged version. Other than the backgrounds, the game is true to the original -with some added options. Legend of Mana is an absolutely beautiful game that is adored for its beautiful sprite work, amazing music composition and being an unconventional JRPG at its time (and maybe even now). The combat is in style of 2D beat'em-ups and have a rather loose feel to the controls which makes combat feel aged. I am mentioning combat early as the controls do take some getting used to and can be a make-or-break for most people. The game uses 2 attack buttons - quick and power. Quick attacks allow you to…

I was a kid when i first opened the Playstation disc tray and put the Legend of Mana cd inside it. The number 3 and the blue screen gave way to the Playstation Intros and then, to the marvelous opening cutscene. Sunday morning's light and perfume enriched the atmosphere and then the game started: I chose a land, a weapon and placed a house in a map. Four hours later, lunch time was mostly missed. I had finished The Lost Princess. And i knew: I would love games forever. Nothing more to say.…

However, that dream did happen again, but in a 2021 (2024 for this review) and feels not as authentic as your first dream. This is where we're going with this remaster. 5/10 - I had wanted to play this game ever since seeing it in some PSX magazine in 2000. And 20+ years later I couldn't pass on the opportunity with the remaster. However, the game left me pretty disappointed. It's... weird. Not much of a story, sidequests are incredibly dull, everything's missable if you just breathe in the wrong order, and the battle system leaves much to be desired. Graphics are gorgeous, but that's about it. I don't regret playing, though. It IS a classic; I just didn't…

I've loved Legend of Mana since the PS1 days, and this remaster nails the parts that made me fall for it: the hand painted backgrounds look gorgeous, the arranged soundtrack is lovely, and the dreamy vignette storytelling still feels like nothing else out there. Just go in knowing it's the same divisive game underneath, with clunky combat and a dozen systems the game refuses to explain, so keep a guide handy if you want to catch even half the quests. A watercolor painting from my childhood brought to life. A masterpiece of careful remastering. You know that feeling when you open an old game and fear the magic will fade? That the visuals will be harsh and the music will seem primitive? Well, the Legend of Mana Remastered is that rare case where the magic not only remains, but shines with new colors. It's the perfect example of how to treat a classic.

Umm... There's a lot to unpack here. Two things struck me immediately with the game: the pixel mismatch and the visual stuttering. The former I knew was going to be a small issue. However, I didn't expect the huge, blocky pixels of the sprites to be quite so jarring based on the recordings and screenshots of the game that I have seen previously. When you're looking at those images on the freshly updated backgrounds (which seem to have lost some of their warmth in the redrawing), it just…

This was one of my favorite games in my childhood, and probably the only game in the Mana series that I think actually holds up (sorry, Secret fans). It's cute in the way Winnie the Pooh is where you can appreciate it as a kid or an adult. Gameplaywise it's a pretty breezy beat-em-up. The RPG elements can be a bit difficult to understand, but doing so is optional, so it's more a labor of love if you end up really liking the game.

To me, I see it as a rich exploration of a world - presented in a storybook format with many heartwarming tales woven into it. The sound track is perfection. Loved the game as a teenager Played it recently, even though I'll always sort-of like it, can't recommend. - Deep systems that have no use since combat is resumed to spamming light attacks to stunlock even bosses - Narrative is completely incomprehensible, not sure there's even a point - Quests have the most obscure triggers and steps, can't get anywhere without a guide. Buy for nostalgia, big skip otherwise.
