60 of 184 · most liked firstRecently, I wanted to make progress on my Steam backlog and was in the mood for a story-driven detective game I could finish in a few evenings without it dragging on for weeks. Whilst scrolling through my library, I came across Lacuna, developed by DigiTales Interactive, a small German indie studio, and remembered the high praise it had received when it was released in 2021. I probably bought it because of that praise, but it eventually took a backseat in my backlog due to other priorities.…

You play the role of Neil Conrad, a CDI agent in a world torn by political tensions. He’s assigned to unravel a murder case that seems to involve a conspiracy spanning the entire planet and reaching throughout the colonized solar system. Story The game starts with a flashback prologue, introducing Drovia, a poor and religious planet yearning for independence. However, it…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story is fine, but the gameplay is lacking. The hook is that it's a point-and-click adventure where your deductions move the story forward. You actually have to review evidence to draw conclusions. The idea is great, but in practice the interface doesn't facilitate this at all (no searching your conversations, notes, clues, news, etc). Sifting through evidence when you don't have the time to play the entire game in one go is therefore frustrating. Doubly so when two answers might both be…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love these types of puzzle detective games but this is just boring. I finished chapter 1 and none of the characters are particular interesting, the plot seems familiar, the excessive smoking is the only charismatic thing the detective does and that is really the bottom of the barrel trope. The detective still comes fully equipped with divorce, disillusionment, a beloved pet, and he needs to run around in circles so that was ... expected/well done? I don't know if I care enough to finish this.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A nice detective game, although there's a few issues also present in other titles by this developer. You can't skip cutscenes and you can't manually load any save. This is unbelievably frustrating, especially since there's achievements for all endings. Developer, listen to me: no one wants to play the same game a bunch of times just to get an achievement. Stop forcing your views (or laziness?) onto the players. I don't care about the same cutscene I watched four times, let me skip it and be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a decent little noir/detective game. The story was nice, although not too complex and it could have been a little longer. The art style and the sound effects create a nice atmosphere and the world is quite immersive (though I would have loved to see more of it). At 16€ it is quite short, so I would recommend to wait for a sale. 7.5/10 I hope there will be a sequel with an even bigger world and a more complex story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's... ok, but tedious to play. Several of the achievements are... simply not worth it. I could not imagine playing through this to get every ending. Only buy this if it's on an extreme discount and you're incredibly bored.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got the game in a bundle and I didn't know anything about it going in. This game is more or less a choose your own adventure visual novel except you have to run everywhere to do stuff. Running requires holding the shift key ... all the time ... forever ... why ... why must I choose to walk or run when none of it matters ... just default run ... all the time ... or tap shift to toggle if I must casually walk for hours to the next scene. Unfortunately, I discovered this game is less like a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed the story and presentation of Lacuna quite a bit. It's essentially a visual novel with light detective work. Unfortunately, the ending felt abrupt and happened right as I was most invested in the story. I would've loved one more chapter to explore and flesh out more of the characters and plot points; instead, this information was rushed and played out as scrolling text at the end of the game. Still a worthwhile play, and I'll be following the dev's future games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dogsh*t. Imagine if a Telltale game railroaded you into an unsolvable situation because you made the wrong choices along the way. Like, imagine if you get to the end of the game and Clementine is guaranteed to die because you keep trying to save her every chance you get. I've literally reached a point where I don't have enough information to solve the case correctly because I made choices I thought were correct in the moment but turned out to be wrong. Guess I'm just not playing the video game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a standout sci-fi noir with a gripping story, gorgeous pixel art, and a haunting soundtrack. The investigation mechanics are simple but effective, and your choices really carry weight. What stuck with me most was the narrative - tense, emotional, and full of moral gray areas. If you're into detective stories with consequences and sci-fi atmosphere, this one's worth your time. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3534873050…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The camera twitch when you stop running sadly makes this game unplayable to me. How it is not an optional camera behavior is beyond me. :/
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Funny game. Interesting lore and narration. The game doesn't give you the option to skip cutscenes or manually save your game so you can't go back and change decisions. This is nice for a first run, but it would be great that these options get enabled after that, so you can complete achievements without watching the same things over and over. The game gives you options inside the mainline story, the problem is that it feels that at some points my choices where merely for a few future…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →would have been a better game with a skip button, I feel like I wasted so much time trying to 100% this game just waiting for the dialogue to pass by. If you are not a completionist and will only play this game once, it is a good experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interactive sci-fi thriller with focus on politics and conspiracy. Don't expect a point-and-click adventure, or interesting detective mechanics. PROS: - Very pretty, meticulous, detailed pixel graphics with interesting city design. - Decent planetary sci-fi story. MEH: - There is no complex detective mechanics, it's almost a visual novel. Most of the game is just walking, and dialogue. - It's rather short, but without fun mechanics it might overstay its welcome if it was longer. CONS: - none…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lacuna is a great game, but not in the way you'd expect from the tags or the fact that the main character is a detective. It is technically a detective game but if I had to rank Lacuna among all the detective/narrative puzzler games that I have ever played, it'd probably be at the bottom of that list in terms of gameplay. The detective puzzles are not that challenging, and there isn't much else to the gameplay other than walking around and talking to people with RPG-style dialogue choices.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is meh, but graphics are lovely. The lighting that changes when you move under a lamp, or light a cigarette, perfectly executed panoramic blurs, occasional bokeh, and probably more… those make it worth it finishing the game just to see everything. If you're a fan of pixel art, and have it in you to ignore other issues, it's 10/10. The worst part is controls, e.g. there are two perfectly fine analogue sticks on every gamepad, but you still have to hold an extra key to run… and that key…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You play as Neil Conrad, agent of the Central Department of Investigations, and when a important planetary leader is assassinated it is your job to find out who is responsible. This is a cyberpunk noir style game with absolutely stunning pixel graphics and atmospheric music. The game knows this and will often times have designated spots to smoke and just take it all in. I don't think smoking really does anything aside from unlocking an achievement or two, but it help sell the feeling of being…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have my gripes on things like why we couldn't say no to X and stick with that choice or why game didn't gave us a final chance to do Y, however, for a choices matter type of game, game still does a solid job, way better job than most of the trash out there. Cool noir vibes. I like the detective work. Plot is actually good. Wish we had a search bar for going through the logs, emails and clues. That'd be swell.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really hard to recommend for one specific reason. I encountered a game-breaking bug on literally my last decision in the game, choosing one way, the one I wanted, soft-locked the game. So after some googling and restarts, I had no choice but to choose the other option. I'm okay with the ending I got still, but it didn't feel authentic to my entire play-through up to that point and how I felt about the decisions I was making. Its unlikely you'll end up in the same spot, only one person on the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gay race communism abounds! In the future, everyone is apparently black or mixed race! Yet somehow, the only couples you'll ever see around town still consist of a White woman and a black male, EXCEPT of course for the protagonist, because pretending black people play pixelated side-scrollers was too strong of a line to cross, even for these conniving developers. Notice how the images on this game's store page consist of virtually no brown people at all? These evil rats know what they are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cool sci-fi noir detective adventure. Puzzles are the logical deduction type and are reasonably straightforward if you're paying attention to the story. I liked the story, the world and the music. Doesn't overstay its welcome, I finished it in ~4 hours. It's meant to be replayed since different decisions can affect how the story turns out, but I'm happy enough with my one play-through for now.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decent adventure with a unique playstyle - a 2D side on view with attractive pixel art. It looks like a platformer but it's 100% an adventire game. Plays well with a controller and flawlessly on Linux. It's Sci Fi setting is original, based in a place where Humans live in a solar system with a few habitable or terraformable worlds and there is generalised prejudice against a religious group. It gives a decent background world to the plot which is mainly around the protagonist who is a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is FANTASTIC. I wasn't expecting it to, but it landed in my favorites after completing my first play-through. The writing is standout, and has to be some of the best I've experienced in a point-and-click adventure game. The timed choices add a layer of action to the game, and are legitimately hard to make. AND they actually make a significant difference in the game. Anyone who likes dystopia, political thrillers, and detective stories should really enjoy this plot. Oh, also, if you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great point & click detective game. It is mostly linear, without much room for exploration outside the bounds of the area you are currently investigating - which I didn't find detrimental, personally. Gameplay consists of investigating areas to pick up clues, interviewing witnesses & suspects and cross-checking your evidence to fill in the blanks in your "sheet" to submit when ready. The mysteries are not particularly difficult to solve, but I enjoyed them and appreciated the fact…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thanks again to a good friend of mine for giving me this game. It's a great pixel art detective game, great story, beautiful graphics, interesting characters, the only thing that was a bit annoying were some of the achievements but other than that I really enjoyed this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What's with these very retro heavily pixalated games? I'm old enough to remember when that was what computer games were. We have come so far in those 30 years. Why would anyone want to return there? Even as a 2D game it is easy to get lost without any minimap with objectives. The dialogue is very mid-teen as it seems the characters are indeed that. This came as part of a bundle, otherwise, I would never spend money on it. 15/100
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yes! A solid point and click/visual novel game with a hardboiled detective (with crippling addiction you can help him kick OR ENABLE) in a futuristic cyberpunk setting. I could easily see this story being set in the Expanse universe. Like Curse of the Obra Dinn, you get to fill in "sheets" on each crime you are tasked to solve, with motive, info, etc. There is also a lot of reading, which might turn off some players, but I really liked it. It was well written and the main protag's voice…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A really interesting Sci-Fi Noir story A beautifully constructed world, with an atmosphere that drags you in. You can really connect with the main character, and try to make the right choices between morally ambiguous options. Gameplay is simple, but fun, and the detective puzzles aren’t very complicated, but you still get a kick when you get it right. I’m not really a pixelated graphics fan, but the game looks really nice, and the soundtrack really brings out the gritty ambience. Overall,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game runs extremely poorly on Linux. First of all, the game doesn't even start because the current Proton version is set to "Hotfix", whereas it should be bound to a specific version so it doesn't break when Proton updates. Once overridden, the game runs extremely poorly. Simple acts like loading a cutscene cause lag spikes of several seconds down to complete freezes. Unfortunately, this is a refund.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great story. Great investigation. One of the very few games I have read all notes in, some several times.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short and entertaining adventure with engaging logic puzzles. It's puzzles aren't as complex as, say, The Case of the Golden Idol, but that facilitates a briskly paced story. The writing is pretty hokey, but likely inoffensive to fans of detective fiction.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am not particularly fond of mechanics: no saves, replay if you made the wrong move But visual part and music is so superb. It would be nice to have OST on streaming
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A well done game to spend 1-2 evenings. If You want a detective story before bed - this is a good choice.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →fell in love with it the very first time i saw it mentioned on a youtube video about pixel art games. the music is so addicting and calming for my ears im so grateful i get to experience this whenever i feel down
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I couldn't get past the intro. The game might be fun later, but the tutorial was so boring I just couldn't get over it. Straight up gives you some news article to read through to answer fake history questions on for a character's fake test. I don't want to have to read an entire info dump about the history of lithium and colonization. No thank you.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lacuna, developed by DigiTales Interactive and published by Assemble Entertainment alongside WhisperGames and Mayflower Entertainment, is a gripping narrative-driven sci-fi noir adventure that forgoes traditional point-and-click mechanics in favor of a more fluid, immersive storytelling experience. Set in a richly imagined futuristic world brimming with political intrigue, personal dilemmas, and ethical uncertainty, Lacuna explores what it means to make choices in a world where the truth is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was an amazing experience, I enjoyed the story a lot. The little puzzles were enjoyable as well, it wasn't really hard but not that straightforward either. It also might be harder depending on some of the choices. Either way I had a blast playing through the game. One run of this game takes about 2-3 hours, maybe longer. So I'd recommend getting it on discount. If you are an achievement hunter this is a nightmare. While I love the game, getting all of the achievements is just…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →❓ What is this Lacuna (2021) is a narrative-driven adventure game developed by DigiTales Interactive. It blends sci-fi, thriller, and noir detective elements, emphasizing exploration, environmental storytelling, and player choice. The game features a cyberpunk aesthetic, multiple endings, and a story-driven approach, though gameplay depth remains limited. As the studio’s first game, it shows promise and ambition. ❔ How I played I completed the main campaign over roughly 6 hours, exploring…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lacuna Nice Futuristic Adventure Title Worth a try Lacuna is a short point-and-click detective game set in a futuristic universe surrounded by conspiracies, political intrigue, and mystery. This game has a fairly linear story set across a series of separate chapters that gradually build upon each other. It doesn’t have a traditional save system like other point-and-click games, where you can save your progress at any time. Instead, the game automatically saves your progress within a chapter…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lacuna is a very good sci-fi detective point and click game. Set in a fictional solar system, you're put in the shoes of a so called CDI agent, a special task force unit for planet wide crimes. The investigation you carry out during the story is both intriguing and fascinating, and it really shines a unique light on what working in such an important crimes unit might actually be like, as the safety of the entire solar system hangs on yours and your partner's shoulders. The game is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very immersive, but the puzzles became too annoyingly hard and boring at the end. It's better to use a walkthrough to get the good ending when things start getting hard. 7/10

unlabelledView post →I still don’t know what a Lacuna is (i assume some kind of fish?) but I had a blast with this game. The sweaty trembling before hitting submit on my case sheets is an addiction. This only has auto-saving and case decisions are permanent, no going back if you did it completely wrong, you just have to live with the consequences and boy are there consequences. Devs should stop being annoying and put in an option to disable auto-save or whatever. I liked agonizing when i played it this time but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you love noirs would recommend. For its simplicity in design the story is pretty well thought out with morale stakes attached to decisions. Some of the detective pieces take some thought to solve. With 8 different endings is definitely replayable
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A short but fun detective game with multiple endings. The graphic is very simple, no voiceover aside from the occassional narration, and there is no manual save, the game autosaves when you reach certain points. If you often play mystery game, you'd likely be able to solve the case and guess the culprit early on, but it doesnt take away the fun. Has multiple outcomes but you'll have to replay from the start if you want to see them all. Overall recommended if you like simple spec guessing game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A pretty decent noir detective story with some very obtuse puzzles which i needed a guide to get through. The story is your bog standard oppression of a religious minority and social class war which was semi decent with some topics taken from real world issues(the vandalism and bomb plot of a place of worship by a group of extremists). I ignored the obvious social commentary and political leanings of the developers because when you look past all of that there is a beautiful game here with some…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Film Noir x Sci-fi lovechild! The pixelart is really pretty and the way that evidence and deducations are handled is cool. Not many detective games let you make mistakes and make you live with the consequences, so that's interesting! I love the main character and the storyline so far has been interesting, as it utilises its setting in a sci-fi world nicely. My only quarrel is that it's always very clear where I can find the places I'm supposed to get to, so sometimes I spend my time aimlessly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Juegazo.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm mixed on the game. There's a mode you toggle to where you can interface with objects but not with people but you can talk to people out side of the mode. There was never a time where the object is directly behind a person you can talk to, so why have the mode at all just have the object be interactable without having the hassle of having to go into a separate mode, a mode in which you also can't run and uses a different set of buttons to navigate with. Other almost pointless features…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(I only play once so this review could change at any time) Solid 9/10, amazing character and story, love the pacing, even though it feels kinda rushed at the end of it. I really wish that there are more that we could do at the end of act 3, like telling boyt about zora's fate, or fighting against dyson's lawyers at court with all the evidence that we've gotten through the whole game. Ending felt rather bittersweet since we got cat and conrad to be together, but that doesn't resolve the…
