unlabelledView post →When playing Donkey Kong Country Returns, you may notice that Donkey Kong never clips through platforms even when he logically should. The secret is that Donkey Kong does not actually exist on the same plane of reality as the rest of the game, and is merely superimposed on top of it.

unlabelledView post →Previously, I have shown that Donkey Kong Country has a surprising amount of levels set underground, being more than half of the game. Donkey Kong Bananza is set *entirely* underground, appearing to finally reach the logical conclusion of Donkey Kong's underground tendencies.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Alright. Kong: Survivor Instinct is done and dusted. Although not without issues, this is a very good Monsterverse game, and it was pretty fun overall. So, let's dive in. The story set-up is that King Kong has returned to the surface from the Hollow Earth for unknown reasons and is tearing up the city this game is set in, also for unknown reasons. People are perplexed by this because Kong was previously a heroic figure who fought on the side of humanity against other Titans. But now, he's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sideways thumb. I can't bring myself to leave this a negative, it just wasn't my type of game. It's barely a metroidvania. I mean it has branching paths, fast travel, permanent health & ammo upgrades to find.. but everything so far has been item or key gated, not ability gated. I would argue that finding the gun which you use to shoot off locks is an ability gate, but that's all I've seen which resembles one. I expect proper traversal upgrades in a metroidvania. I will say that the map…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This more than doubles the distance you're able to cover underwater before you start to drown (6000 game units vs 13,500 game units). This actually makes a lot of side-areas (such as the flooded tunnel in Hong Kong) viable to explore when they wouldn't be otherwise.
unlabelledView post →Kong: Survivor Instinct is a surprisingly solid "Monsterverse" metroidvania that features excellent level design as well as a decent combat system reminiscent of that in the Batman: Arkham series. The story is about as simple as it gets: One day the Titans (Kong, Abaddon, and others) suddenly attack an unnamed American city, leaving it in ruins. An evacuation is ordered and you, David Martin, head out in search of your daughter after your calls to her go unanswered. It doesn't take long…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not really a Metroidvania, instead it's a somewhat linear 2.5D action adventure game. You'll backtrack occasionally, but because you got lost not because you acquired a new key item etc. Survivor Instinct's main problem is that the basic gameplay loop is set in the first 30 minutes and it doesn't really change. There's some real epic high points here where you'll escape from Titans in sequences similar to the Ori and the Will O' The Wisp boss battles, but they're not that common and the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I liked a lot, but it felt like an old on the rails quicktime event type of game at points. Glad I finished it but wont play it again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a massive Kong fan and collector I was so excited for this i eagerly purchased as soon as it went live and got to say I’m really disappointed. The visuals and style are cool the kong encounters are cool. But the script the dialogue and the combat is all dire so much so it just makes the game feel cheap which is ashame because all the stuff in the background is epic and cinematic but the combat and dialogue is that bad you are zapped out of it. Im refunding I may try it again in the future…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like Kong which is why I bought this game. I just couldn't stand dying all the time because of unresponsive controls. Very frustrating.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good idea for a game, but again, I don't understand the creators adding a few more weapons or options to the game and it would have been more interesting. I don't recommend it
