What people are saying
Journey is overwhelmingly praised for its emotional, beautiful, and unique multiplayer experience.
Players consistently highlight the profound emotional impact of Journey, especially the surprising discovery that the companions they met were real people, not NPCs. Many describe deeply moving moments of cooperation and kindness from strangers, making the experience unforgettable. [1][2][6][10][18]
The game's minimalist design, stunning visuals, and evocative soundtrack are widely celebrated, with many calling it a work of art. However, a minority criticize the simple gameplay as a walking simulator, and some report technical issues with the PC port, such as audio compression and crashes. [5][12][20][33][35][36]

unlabelledView post →At the last section of the game, I was walking with a stranger I came across there. Suddenly the wind swept me and I fell down from a bridge. I didn't die or anything but I started from the beginning of that section. Without hesitation, my companion jumped down with me. He could've continued his journey but he chose to finish it with me. I'll never forget that.

unlabelledView post →Reviewing Journey is like trying to describe a scent in a memory using algebra, so I won't even try. I'll review the companions I met instead, the kind souls who made some steps with me, learned and taught, played with little noise patterns and stayed in awe, with me, looking at the scenery. Guys, you're a 10/10. As is this game. No words, just awe. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3750441800
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Since this game's release on PS3 in 2012, I have probably played this game 20 times. I have NEVER finished this game with another player, let alone played more than one level with another person... until buying this game on PC. I literally didn't even know it was possible (guess I never once looked at the trophies, WTF). This is clearly the way the game is meant to be experienced and holy cow, how different it feels??? It's a beautiful experience solo, but with another person?? My god.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Journey dials way back on actual gameplay n puts all its juice into clean visuals n vibe. Gameplay’s super bare-bones, basically just a walking sim, but that 2 hour single run hits so hard on immersion. Perfect for when ur feeling kinda burnt out, whole thing’s super chill n even kinda sleepy in the best way.

unlabelledView post →An incredible experience made all the more incredible because I went into this game totally blind and had no idea about the companions. I thought that really lovely person who was helping me not get my butt kicked / lost was an AI. Stranger, I have no idea who you are, but you're the most generous, patient human being alive. I literally got up and left my computer for several minutes multiple times (sorry!!), and you just patiently waited for me to return. I've never had a more awe-inspiring…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Luckily, I met a person who stayed with me til the end, showed me every secret, and waited for me when I disconnected. We even drew a heart in the snow together. It's moving to know that a stranger I've never met and never spoken a single word to was willing to help me like that. I will continue this beautiful cycle, and next time, I'll become the one guiding other people. This game is truly a one-of-a-kind experience, it redefined what's possible in this medium. 10/10.

unlabelledView post →I have just finished Journey, and I wanted to share a few thoughts after spending more than 9 hours in total and unlocking every achievement. I did not just finish the game once and leave it there; I played it across a few finishes, letting the experience settle in, and honestly, that felt like the right way to approach this game. What stood out to me the most was the atmosphere. The visuals are simply stunning, with vast deserts, ancient ruins, snowy mountains, and a beautifully minimalist…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Journey Review I was embarrassingly late to playing Journey, and I completely misunderstood one of its biggest ideas. Throughout my first playthrough, I assumed the companion I occasionally met was just an NPC there to help me through certain sections. It wasn't until I finished the game and looked through the achievements that I discovered those companions were actually other players. Wanting the achievement for completing the journey with the same companion, I asked a friend to help me. It…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is undoubtedly a work of art, but the PC port is a work of trash, especially the audio, it's compressed and tinny, walking through sand sounds like walking through dried bushes. Its a crime to ruin this game's soundtrack like this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Didnt realize until the very last level of this game that the "NPCs" I was playing with was actually players online. I was like "wow interesting choice to have NPCs that solve the puzzles for you sometimes and other times be complete dogwater". Beautiful game though- I'll definitely replay it sometime
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Journey is a beautiful, emotionally moving, and profound statement piece in regards to video games as a form of art. Set the tone before playing this one. Set your expectations. As I read in another user's review; this is a game you must be in the mood for before playing. It's best played alone, in a cold, dark room, late at night, with nothing but a single candle lit next to your screen. Maybe after everyone else in the house has gone to bed, or before everyone else in the house has woken up.…

unlabelledView post →idk man, I wanted to play this for years and decided to finally play my backlog. It was visually pretty of course and the music was nice but the gameplay frustrated me. A game that constantly has to take over your controls to show you the "cool thing" you're supposed to look at might as well just be Wall Paper Engine because its taking the emergent gameplay and player driven exploration out of the equation. Just as things started to get interesting the game ended. 5/10. I recommend playing it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a deeply human experience. it's simplicity breeds a sort of connection unmatched by anything else. you don't need to be anyone or anything to feel it, it's unconditional.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a beautiful game, both physically and metaphorically. Hits the emotions and leaves you feeling introspective on life. Please play it. I regret having waited so long to play and finish it. My journey was almost entirely alone. I found someone at the end when my journey became hardest. It made it so much more beautiful to reach the end of my journey with someone else. When it mattered most, someone was there to see my journey to its end.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I know others have had a really good experience with this game, but that was not my experience with it. I think a lot of the game's whimsy and magic is based on encountering and playing with other people, but this is completely chance based. I didn't come across anyone when i played and so i just got to play hold forward for 2 hours. And don't get me wrong the environment is beautiful, but its not enough to make me enjoy doing p much nothing for 2 hours.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an experience everyone deserves, defined by both notable style and (emotional) substance, and there are hundreds of great reviews that dig into the point and synopsis of Journey, so I wont do that. I'll let you, gaming nerd, know what I think of the whole thing, cos it won't appeal to everyone. Isn't just a walking sim? Well, if it is, it's a terrible one. While not on rails exactly, it is kinda and you can finish by just moving forwards and occasionally following glowing lights but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Started out thinking it was just a very beautiful game. Met my first companion and they purposefully fell off a ledge they were already on just so they could show me the way back up. Cried so much. I wish I could forget that I played this so I could experience it again for the first time. 10/10

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow, just wow. Who knew that a game lasting only two hours could make such an impact… Similar to games like Abzû, The Pathless, and Sword of the Sea. Journey looks absolutely beautiful. The gameplay is very simple, as it is not supposed to be challenging, yet it moves you in a way few games can. The storytelling is incredible, as it’s told through the world, music and silence. It’s pure “show, don’t tell” done right. What truly sets Journey apart is the online experience. You meet strangers.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's funny how Journey is a game that uses the concept of online/co-op in a really unique way... because when I first played it, my dumbass had no internet and I played the whole thing offline. I was like "yeah its neat I guess, idk"
unlabelledView post →27/12/2025 I had seen this game recommended a few times and the screenshots don't truly sell what this game brings. This game is an absolute delight to the senses; the use of: ambient sounds, music, lighting, colour, camera angle and haptic feedback (note: use a controller!) are used with both great affect and effect. It is executed phenomenally, and this in turn creates a captivating story. I picked this up, thinking I'd spend around a 20 - 30 minutes, ended up captivated and played through…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't know what people see in this game. It is just a walking simulator. Maybe there is something I missed in here, a subtle criticism of something else, or maybe it was intended to be played coop or something. But walking simulators are a no-go for me in general.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →linpl, if you’re reading this, that wind part really annoyed me, and I panicked a little when I fell, but you waited and stayed with me until the end. you made my experience with Journey unforgettable. you’re the best. by the way, this game is beautiful, especially if you find someone to accompany you all the way to the end.
