Jarhead
Jarhead is a film about a US Marine Anthony Swofford’s experience in the Gulf War. After putting up with an arduous boot camp, Swofford and his unit are sent to the Persian Gulf where they are eager to fight, but are forced to stay back from the action. Swofford struggles with the possibility of his girlfriend cheating on him, and as his mental state deteriorates, his desire to kill increases. From TMDB

unlabelledView post →Saw a trailer for some movie about a 'bred for war' Jarhead dude versus a mech that can't hit anything and it looks so boring. At this rate the US military movie genre is gonna eventually devolve into US marine armed with stone axe versus chinese space marine and then win because Utah or something.
unlabelledView post →Dan Olson's Jarhead sequels video is an interesting watch. Not because it dives into the jingoistic sequels to a not jingoistic movie, but because Dan references Beowulf 1999 in it.
unlabelledView post →Some people appear to have thought Jarhead wasn’t an anti-war film and I’m not sure what they were watching but it wasn’t what I was watching
unlabelledView post →It's near impossible to make an anti-war war movie. The closest is probably Jarhead, whuch was a movie about ridiculous Marine Corps bullshit and wandering through the desert doing absolutely nothing.
unlabelledView post →There's a scene in the movie Jarhead where soldiers are shown the surfing sequence from Apocalypse Now to pump them up before invading Iraq in the Persian Gulf War. It works, the soldiers leave filled with blood-lust. That scene is based on real events. The US Marines really did that.

unlabelledView post →HBD ruminative hunk Jake Gyllenahaal, BOTD in 1980, turning 45 today. Richard Kelly's "Donnie Darko" (2001) remains my fave movie of his (the original, not the disastrous director's cut). He also makes a hot Santa in Sam Mendes' "Jarhead" (2005). Merry Xmas!

unlabelledView post →There’s a scene in the movie Jarhead where the soldiers love the Ride of the Valkyries scene that prefaces the assault on the village because they don’t care if Apocalypse Now is an anti-war movie, they just think the violence is cool. That’s the level we’re dealing with here.

I just bought the Region 1+4 DVD (Mexico) at the flea market, and the demo is missing, replaced with trailers for Jarhead and Serenity. (Left is US, courtesy of DVDMovieMenus.com)
unlabelledView post →They say no film can be truly anti-war because of the nature of cinema. I feel like Jarhead is the exception to that rule. It makes war look like a tedious bore, and even the boredom will break you.
unlabelledView post →God I love the movie Jarhead, so criminally underrated Rewatched it last night and GOD it hits: killer cinematography, tight writing, thematically potent, etc Extremely funny to me still that one of the biggest reasons for its critical disdain was the lack of a heroic payoff, which was the POINT ‼️
unlabelledView post →Haha yeah, I love that video The one distinction I'd draw is that given what Jarhead is actually about, the very existence of the sequels is pretty demeaning to that movie The John Wick sequels are best graded on a steadily declining curve, but they don't give me an ugly feeling lol
unlabelledView post →Jarhead, maybe? A film that just shows the dehumanizing nature of the military and pointlessness of war all while the main character never gets a chance to fire his gun in combat?
unlabelledView post →anyway this is all clearly just the femme version of “i can’t believe people would watch the movie Jarhead and want to go join the Marines,” i just… still somehow find it shocking despite being aware of the first genre of thing
unlabelledView post →Folding Ideas recently came out with a video about the movie Jarhead and the Marines in general. That branch definitely seems the most cult like. A friend was a marine and shrugs off physical abuse he received. I was appalled.

unlabelledView post →was just watching the movie Jarhead for the first time my dad was a Marine drill sergeant in the years immediately preceding when the film was set, and always advised me against watching it because of its “unfair portrayal of drill instructors”
unlabelledView post →the movie "Jarhead" has sequels
unlabelledView post →In the book, Jarhead, the writer talks about how he and his fellow marines would watch ‘anti-war’ films like Platoon and Full Metal Jacket to get themselves psyched up for war. The book was made into an anti-war film.
unlabelledView post →Former Marine here, my buddies and I loved those scenes in Aliens when we watched it on VHS in the late 80's. " Ain't that a bunch of jarheads" Also, the movie Jarhead had the same feel to me.
unlabelledView post →Today, I watched Jarhead, a 2006 anti-war movie~ It was good! I wicked liked it. One of my favorite pass-times is watching something, then imagining it as a Gundam analogue :) Can you imagine a Gundam show/film where Gundams are only used once, against the heroes? That would be so subversive!!
unlabelledView post →A call of duty movie is just a version of Jarhead that doesn’t think about anything

unlabelledView post →(there were so many people who thought "Jarhead" was an action movie that they made a bunch of sequels that were just regular-ass military-action movies)
unlabelledView post →Aiming high with technical ambition for the film, Mendes only wanted one person as Director of Photography. He’d first worked with Roger Deakins on Jarhead in 2005, and the two joined forces again on 1917 for their fourth collaboration. 13/50

Starts off questioning "what is an enemy", ends questioning "what is life". Author is a cunt though, acquire through other means than purchase (such as borrowing) if you can. Strange someone so bigoted can write a series so... not bigoted. Bill the galactic hero. "It's always bowb your buddy week". A bit immature, maybe the jokes are dated now. Films:…

unlabelledView post →As I just wrote, Apocalypse Now was -and still is - an ANTI-WAR movie. My father won an Oscar for his work on that film and I know it's not the main point, but GHAHAHAH! He has talked about the jarring-ness of working on JarHead/Apocalypse Now.

unlabelledView post →feels very akin to movie making, where they have something filmed and in the can and going through post and editing and it's abundantly clear it's not going to do well on its own so they go "what IP do we own" and staple it to that. Yes like the Jarhead sequels but I was thinking American Psycho

unlabelledView post →The Russian movie Come And See I’ve seen argued is one of the only true anti-war movies out there. I always remember in Jarhead how he points out that what I thought were anti-war movies from growing up, Platoon/Apocalypse Now/Full Metal Jacket, were actually pro-war and they loved watching them.
unlabelledView post →I wasn't a huge fan of the movie Jarhead and I didn't think that its anti-war message was that solid but there is something very funny about it being followed up by direct-to-video or streaming sequels which are just rah rah USA jingo fodder
unlabelledView post →which the film Jarhead gets: we see marines at boot camp cheering apocalypse now, missing the point. but coppolas film indeed has this weakness: jarhead in contrast refuses to make battle exciting and is about protagonist disappointment at not getting heroic action, just techno airstrikes etc
unlabelledView post →I'm willing to humour the thesis you can't make an anti-warn movie to a point, but I draw the line at people who argue stuff like Jarhead somehow makes war look cool. I have a related personal maxim about critical interpretation, "There are no wrong answers, unless you're really fucking wrong."
unlabelledView post →Jarhead is a Christmas movie.
unlabelledView post →Jarhead might be the one exception since the point of that movie was not to be action-packed. But all the ones where shit happens, yea same difference.

unlabelledView post →Jarhead 3: The Siege (2016; Kaufman) extremely funny to me that they took a failed prestige-Oscar bait movie like Jarhead & turned it into a DTV franchise. This is cheap as hell, and the acting is awful, but contains about an hour of close-quarters action that is a total must for meat heads like me
