It's a devastating but absolutely incredible film that tells the story of the Syrian refugee crisis with agency, humanity, and nuance. www.angel.com/movies/i-was... (1)

unlabelledView post →Angel Studios continues to be confusing. Their new movie this weekend is apparently... I Was A Stranger, a pro-refugee movie from a Palestinian production company and directed by the producer of Martin Scorsese's Silence? And it seems like it's at least semi-woke?
unlabelledView post →“Brett Andersen’s film, in its attempt to present various perspectives in this story, shifts the viewer’s attention from one character to another, diluting its emotional impact,” writes @mcastimovies.bsky.social about I WAS A STRANGER.

Want to check out some of the wildcard games. I Was a Stranger and Is this Thing On are on the table, not sure if the timing will work out, though.

unlabelledView post →Angel Studios' new movie I WAS A STRANGER opens with a closeup of Trump Tower in Chicago, but then goes on to encourage empathy toward refugees. I was not expecting any of this. Here's my review: aisleseat.com/i-was-a-stra... #filmsky @ofcs.bsky.social
unlabelledView post →Angel Studios’ latest film, I Was a Stranger, is arguably their best - and yet it is also their most myopic and self-serving, a digestible thriller which reduces the migrant crisis to fodder for generalized action. unlabelledView post →Yeah, they are making the types of movies that Hollywood has just stopped making but that there definitely is still an audience for. I saw I Was a Stranger last month and was surprised that it was basically the sort of liberal issue movie you used to see all the time (think Blood Diamond)

Or films that make me scoot to the edge of my seat and maybe even spontaneously clap (Ha, like the little man in the Chronicle film reviews!), as with the music montage in “Sinners” and when the third car appears in the mirror in “OBAA.” (3/3)
