Everybody loves to shoot through barrel chains in Donkey Kong Country (yes you do; don't lie), but what if a game was based entirely upon doing just that—except really, really fast? Super Meat Boy fast? Faster than you can think, operating purely on gut instinct, responding from your prehistoric lizard brain to basic flashes of color and memories of pain? That would be exhausting. That would be exhilarating. That would be HoPiKo.

I can't recommend HoPiKo, mainly because of several contradictions in genre and execution. Allow me to explain. HoPiKo is a timing based puzzle platformer that punishes you for sitting still or trying to time your movements. Try to plan out your path through the insta-death filled level? Don't take longer than five seconds, or you'll be killed. Missed a timing sequence and have to wait for it to change? Better hope you're on the platform less than five seconds, or it will dissolve and you will…

Hopiko is intense. That is by far the best way to describe it. It's minimalist graphical style coupled with its chiptune audio lend themselves to one another quite well creating intense and pulse pounding action. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=049Wn5KfaGE Textual Summary: There is little to expand on to HoPiKo. It's a intense minimalist platformer. You have 1 action and that is to jump, and it does that through many levels with increasing complexity. Each level being split up in 5…

I hate that I have to not recommend this, as the game, soundtrack, and levels are really excellent and it's one of the better games out there and a lot of fun...when it works. However, the actual control is probably the single worst setup I have ever seen in my life. The default control is already not great, since you're supposed to aim at platforms in a fast-paced way using the joystick, where it fires on release, leading to awkwardness in aiming which is highly sensitive to controller drift…

The fundamental motion in Hopiko is the hop. More specifically, it is a straight line. The gameplay is as simple as it gets. You hop from place to place. That’s it. You can’t stay on platforms too long, as they expire and kill you after a few seconds. The screen is littered with obstacles. It’s reminiscent of the Donkey Kong Country games’ barrel obstacle courses. Like some other modern indie games, it has a very short and intense gameplay loop: you die, you die, you die, but eventually you…

Well the controls are awful and if you mess up on one level you have to go back to the start of that entire collection of levels. Both of these are terrible flaws and unforgivable in this day and age. I'm sorry to say but this game really does seem like it's been programmed by programmers but not designed by designers.

You have only a little time to beat each level, in this time you have to jump from platform to platform ( in the correct direction, and at good timing :p ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2h0EiUksT3w

I remember when I first played this game on mobile. This game is fast and tricky to master, but with given time, you'll ace the level. The levels are good, but what I am not confortable is how easily it is to not align yourself to each platform. Overall, this is a fast and difficult platformer that you'll enjoy.

Quick Score: 5/5 Notes: Initially my only major gripe with the game was the default control scheme, but after I was reminded of the game several years after I initially played it I decided to try something. Basically, by default the controls are "aim" with analog stick, and "shoot" your character by releasing the stick. I figured out that if you use the "mode shift" function in steams controller config, you can temporarily disable the analog stick, which effectively sends a "release" signal…

It's a game with a cool concept and mechanics and I'd really like to love and recommand it but I just can't for one good reason: the controls are sh.it. Remember when you were little and using a rubber band as a slingshot? You put the rubber band on your left hand thumb and pull it with your right hand and when you want to fire, you release it. Fun but not really precise because when releasing the rubber band, you often move your left thumb and so you can't aim correctly. Frustrating right?…

HoPiKo is a console ported retro 2D pixel platformer with an ugly minimalist theme. The confounding part here is that the developers used high resolution graphics to render ugly pixels, kind of like hiring Gordon Ramsay to microwave a hot pocket for you. But you know, not a chef as good as Gordon Ramsay because if this game was food he'd swear at the developers. Anyway apart from the hideous graphics, crappy console control scheme, terrible gameplay, the game doesn't render properly, if…

Simply unplayable on PC. I've bought the game both on Android and iOS, and they are all perfect including the controls. The PC edition has much more animations, but that's it. Nothing extra. Well that's OK, but there's a mouse assist going on the game, which makes it unplayable. Horrible controls. You can't move the character everywhere, there are some fixed ways unlike the mobile versions.

The least tutorially tutorial ever found in a game and the sound track is akin to a Speccy 48k throwback. That said the concept is very good and the mechanics are solid, but that doesn't stop it from being hella frustrating as such sadomasochists only need apply. Insert <Git Gud> comments below.

It's a platformer, but there isn't really any jumping, and definitely no running. What you do is simply shoot yourself from platform to platform, either straight ahead (which is faster, but be careful of untimely death to mines) or in a direction of choice (which is slower). That's all there is to it. When it works, it works really well. The game sends you almost into a trance of high-speed hops and techno chiptunes. Understanding when you can safely jump straight will make it even faster, but…

A twitchy puzzle-platformer, where speed and precise analog stick control is key. The game is intense, loud and exciting. However, it also has lots of potential to be frustrating. The necessity to time and aim correctly with the constant pressure of time can get extremely annoying when you can nail the first 4 levels of a run yet the 5th and final one defeats you because you hesitated or you didn't flick the stick correctly and now you have to do the first 4 again with the same precision.…

I played with a controller and this game is fantastic. 100% about mechanics! You must be VERY good with a controller to make some of these skill shots. It's fantastic to zip around each level at such a fast pace, especially when you squeeze through a tight space, it feels great! It introduces new mechanics quick enough to keep it interesting and it's really hard. I'm serious, this game is quite difficult and requires so much skill. I think my hands are sore, CASUAL MY ASS. I think this would be a really fun game if it had proper mouse support, I guess they want you to use a controller. It's almost as if your mouse gets stuck in a corner and then you can only go full left or full right, making it impossible to make it to the next platform. PLEASE FIX!!! Take Donkey Kong Country's barrel blast level gameplay, kick it up a few notches, and place it within a very flamboyant (visually and acoustically) package - you'll more or less have HoPiKo. This game expects perfection and will fire you back to the beginning of a 5 level run at any point you fail, however the briefness of the levels themselves keeps this from feeling too much like a chore. The repetition, if experienced, is essential to keep ones skills ahead of the difficulty curve.…

HoPiKo is an action puzzle game based on speed and timing. A controller is recommended for play but I felt more comfortable and found more success with a mouse. You click and move your mouse in the direction you want to go to move between platforms. There are different types of platforms that do different things and the combination of them makes a level. There are 5 stages in a level that need to be beaten in one go, so if you die on the 5th stage you repeat the whole level. There are 5 worlds…
