60 of 189 · most liked firstI really wanted to like Great Houses of Calderia and it starts out fairly promising. You can customize your House and your starting Lord, choose a home province, and a starting Tradition(this game's version of a Social Tech Tree), and then it is off to the races. The game provides you with a series of primary and secondary goals that you can attempt to accomplish if you are new to the game, or you can set your own goals as you might expect from a game heavily inspired by Paradox's grand…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’ve read a comment about someone leaving a negative review because in Great Houses of Calderia, one of his daughter became a ruler and apparently it felt very historically inaccurate but I guess he probably never read much about Italian Renaissance period or even heard about powerful women such as Isabelle d’Este, Sofonisba Anguissola, Vittoria Colonna, and many more I won’t list here. That game is not about historical reenactment, it’s a fantasy realm but just like in real life, women of power…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can see what they are going for here, but my experience with the game was pretty mediocre, sadly. My gameplay was constantly interrupted by people proposing the same trade deals to me over and over again, and since I cannot promise to trade away my entire food production more than once, I had to to reject them, tanking my relations with all of my neighbours. This got really annoying, since the game slows to a crawl. Similarly, despite an overall good tutorial, it was also really difficult to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got the game on sale. It was very fun while it lasted, but this is a one and done game. After one play through, you will have seen enough and know all the tricks such that everything will become tedious the second time around. Would have liked options to extend the game longer as opposed to being herded by set game events.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This might be called as a "recent bias", but this could be the best political grand strategy game. Even could beat CK3 and Norland. But here's the thing: 1. Last update was in 2024, it's a pity. 2. There's should be more than one way that a player can use to achieve "win". It's limited to linear progression. Not to mention it's hard to elevate oneself. 3. The end is bugged. It says that I win, but the final war itself doesnt conclude. Not to mention it forced me to pick a side. 4.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Abandoned game with great potential
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I very much enjoyed the game, I can't in good conscience recommend an unfinished game that is simply never going to approach some sort of 'done' state. The studio shuttered, which is a shame. It does have interesting ideas, so if you see a good sale it can easily be worth your time and money to play around, but baseline, don't. (I have a lot of unlisted playtime for various reasons)
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game was very promising, and I had high expectations for it, but it was abandoned really quickly and feels half-finished. It needed a lot of quality-of-life improvements and balancing, and the performance gets noticeably worse as you progress. It’s a shame the game ended up like this — I don’t recommend buying it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is riddled with bugs, the game itself is mid id be lying if i say i didnt have fun but the game still lacks content some bugs can stop you from winning a war which makes the game unplayable and if you think it cant get any worse its probably abandoned by the dev last bug fix or update being in november 2024 i cant recommend this it is kinda fun but its a tedious buggy mess 5/10 edit: im pretty sure the game breaks when your a duke because after i became a duke my game kept crashing and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It would be fine if things were just tedious, but on top of that they are not explained properly. This issue starts with small things but they add up creating something that just drains your soul. In the very beginning, you get a choice of 6 tradition paths that explain what bonus you get. When the game loads you find out the game just lied: you don't get this bonus. Instead, you get a good amount of progress toward unlocking this bonus (medium difficulty, maybe it's different on easy). Neither…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dead game, no updates in over a year, it was very promising as well.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In a nutshell: Tedious. Buggy. Low replayability. Really wanted to like this game. Admittedly, held my interest enough for two complete playthroughs (frankly, they don't last very long). So I guess one could say I got some value out of it, and it's not hopelessly terrible. But can't recommend it; just too many other and better games out there. ======= Separate comment. This isn't the reason for my non-recommendation, but I think it's worth mentioning. By far the most common…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Would I recommend this game? Sure, if you can get it at a deep deep discount. Otherwise, stay away; it just has too many flaws to be considered a good game. It mostly resembles an event generator with random events occurring constantly. Said events are then resolved through RNG based on some arbitrary stat. Even given all that, however, I could work with it to some degree, but the totally bizarre design decisions left me bewildered. Some examples: You want to become a count (one of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A 'deep political strategy game' with events every 10 sec and constant 'dice rolls' on random attributes. Family members become rivals and friends randomly with no feedback or purpose. Characters gain traits constantly through events. Its like Sheogorath created a world after reading Game of Thrones...terrible
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great idea, POORLY executed, bug ridden post mid game/late game, and looks like it's abandoned by the dev... Can't recommend it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Great Houses of Calderia for almost 25 hours. This game is either too easy to finish, either absurdly hard with max difficulty. I wouldn't recommend it to 4X amateurs because of its lack of features and complexity. However, this game implement an interesting way of managing conflcts, a rebalanced and more complex version of this feature, maybe with some variations, would definitely be a critical step towards my personal appreciation of this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looked at the current reviews and while I don't think this game is phenomenal (yet), I certainly don't think the current reviews reflect the quality of the game, so here's my two cents. First the gripes: -This game is not well optimized; My computer is beefy so this doesn't affect me all that much, but I can imagine it would be a problem for someone with a potato. -This game is not stable; The autosaves are regular enough to where this isn't a huge issue but I did crash a handful of times.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Abandoned great game with huge potential. Don't even try to reach late game there is a bug with a civil war and the devs don't care! It's just a crash grab, save your money and your time! I am not sure about their other games but I am sure they are abandoned slops also, save your time and money from this monsters!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They abandoned this too fast. The Civil War doesn't mean ♥♥♥♥ and replay value is zero. Beware of games from this company/developers/publisher. Disgusting.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is fun for a role play prospective only problem is that everything is the same want to convince someone to do something send your most elite diplomats in a 3 way battle and if you lose the most important one you get nothing but some respect. Combat the same thing... trade deals the same everything is a 3 way battle that feels more like you have to pick one or 2 to win. I like the idea of how this 3 way battle is done but don't think it should be everything in the game for the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is interesting game, similar to CK2. It is very fun to navigate and build up your house. But end game feels buggy and just lacking balance. Should you buy? maybe, on discount, to explore early-mid game. Dont feel dissapointed when it falls apart at the end What better games to try? Crusader kings 2
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great idea that could of been a great game. Could. If it was done, the bugs were fixed, the system for creating characters at game start was reworked, UI was added to make tasks like marriage compatible with non-superhero level determination. Could. But won't.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR A very mid game that is only recommended on 50% or greater sale. Only reason I recommend is I feel I got my $10 worth but would of felt cheated at full price. I see what they are doing here. Making a political intrigue game that focuses on family relations instead of completely combat. I welcome this focus in grand strategy games. Though this game has a couple of issues that cause this to fall apart. It gets extremely repetitive fast. After you reach level of count (almost half way…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has immense potential, but in its current state it is difficult to recommend it. As many others have pointed out, it is not a CK clone, for better and worse. Unfortunately as of now the game is quite buggy and the UX is rather appalling. Every event in the game will pause the game, and unlike the equivalent events in CK which will pop up on your screen, here you have to click every time on the event icon at the right of the screen. It may be a nitpick but it quickly gets irritating.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game deserves like a 50% rating. You start the game and understand nothing - then when you understand the game, you are already done with it. Which is like 10 hours. Gameplay: You basically figure out how to grow your city, then send spys to other states and drain them of their workers with war which is wayyy too easy and then you do that for 10 more hours. After the 5th hour, this gets tedious. Game also begins lagging after 30 mins so you gotta restart it. Also didnt get the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a software developer, it is impossuble you ship a piece of software with so many UX bugs like this one has without noticing. Obscuring bugs of business logic are hard to catch in a complex application, but UX ones that just disables "Quit to desktop" feature are a sign the commitment of this company with its products is severily low. A pity.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The demo was incomprehensible but had potential so I gave it a try anyway. It has good bones but this is not a completed game. I was disappointed to see buried deep under other information that AI was being used here. I looked into it after repeated social/diplomatic prompts that had horrendous images and simply said "Placeholder" and had dummy options but still seemed to count in the game. I finally felt like I had figured out (mostly) what the game wants you to do- though there are still many…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a tough call, but ultimately no: there IS so much about the game that DOES work -- I especially love the skill-tree system they have -- but there's also so many basic features that either aren't present or aren't accessible. The tipping-point for me was (spoiler) when the civil war started and I had no way of telling which side I had previously agreed to be on or which side my neighbors said they would be on -- wound up surrounded by enemies and it felt completely unfair since I had no way…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dead game, no updates in over a year
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game. I like RPG, Grand RPG, and civilization building. Many things about this game are to my liking, but more are clunky and convoluted. Many of my issues have to do with game mechanics, and how there are tasks/goals/quests required to progress through the game that you as a player have no direct control over. You either have to infer how to achieve the goal, watch a lengthy video online, or get lucky. Many things that impact important elements of the game are not…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have zero clue why so many people draw such a heavy comparison to this game and CK3. These idiots really saw that it's (1) medieval and (2) a grand strategy and their Paradox-addled brains immediately gurgled out the few first novel synaptic transmissions of "durr cruz kangs hurr!!" It is similar to CK3 in the way that it has intrigue and characters- that's about it. It's more similar to Total War in the way the map is laid out, how armies move around, and how buildings work than anything…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I REALLY want to like this game! The game is a very easy to understand strategy game, like a streamlined crusader kings. But, the game has horrible frame rate drops, many unexplained features with no way of learning about them, and regular and random crashes.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great Houses of Calderia is a feudal grand strategy game that places family, politics, economics, diplomacy, and warfare at the center of an ambitious struggle for influence. Developed by Resistance Games and published by Firesquid, it takes inspiration from the Mediterranean Renaissance while presenting its own fictional province filled with competing noble families. Instead of controlling a single ruler and treating everyone else as supporting pieces, the game asks you to manage an entire…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Passable grand strategy game based on simple RTS minigame. Not bad, but feels unfinished and not well balanced. After one victory I really do not feel interest in replaying, which is not a good sign for grand strategy, I am on the fence for this one, but given the price and lack of replayability I move to not recommend. But there is value if you really like grand strategies, especially focused mostly on economy and diplomacy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An abandoned ship, though have many potential. Many mechanics are not full implemented/designed in a good way and the AI is terrible (for e.g, spamming war halfway across the world). Lacking sufficient tooltips and documents explaining the game making it worse. I rarely write review, but this is the one time where I feel hooked to the to the game at first and later regretted buying it:)
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A lot of mechanics that work, but at the end of the day amount to nothing. The combat system is a breath of fresh air, but overall this game is a slug. Overall is not bad but tedious enough to cause me to not care about anything that happens. Probably a game for the hardcore players that are still looking for that game of thrones subterfuge. For me this is far from it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just not recommending this game feels wrong to me. This could actually be a great game with more development time put in. The developer left his last game unfixed and this one as well, it seems. I bought this game on sale for 2.50 and it was more than worth the money. So you start out as a small baron on a freshly colonized island. You will depose your count, vassalize yourt neighbours, overthrow your duke until you control the whole island. You will only directly control your own fiefdom and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's just not terribly fun. The UI is hard to work out, the objectives don't always work, and the vast majority of the gameplay is 1) build a single building at a time, 2) respond to random events that pause the game, and 3) deal with bandits, which are trivial and just time consuming to handle. I considered increasing the difficulty, but that would just make the bandits more annoying, so... yeah, pass. Woudl not recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Complete and utter lackluster tutorial which fails to explain any meaningful game mechanics aside from how to assign farmers and send a family member away from your fief. What exactly am I doing here? How do I build anything? How do I scheme? How do I fight? How am I supposed to take over and win? You call this out of early access? Get it together. Some of us don't want to have to sit on Youtube all day to understand something we paid for.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm only 38 hrs in but I'm really enjoying it and feel some of the comments are a little Harsh. The game is basically a resource management game. The land is divided into areas ruled by various Houses and it's up to you to manage your relationships with the AI controlled Houses. Members of your household help maintain said relationships, form bonds marry and have children , growing your family. Each family member gives a production bonus to your workforce that produce various commodities the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The foundations for a good game are there, but the gameplay is just too repetitive and the core mechanics underlying it are too shallow. I don't think it's a bad game per se, but it had potential to be much better. Then again, I went in expecting a hybrid of Crusader Kings and Civilization, so maybe my expectations were too high. I ended up getting bored and ending my playthrough within 5 hours. If it's on sale, buy it and give it a try. But I cannot recommend it at full price.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Runs flawlessly on Linux, Valve thank you for Proton! Game is unfinished but playable. It is also abandoned by the developers. Worth the $2 sale price but desperately needs mods. They say you can mod it, but I've yet to find any mods anywhere online. They also say there is a modding tool...... but I've also not found that either. This is another one of those games that needs a neutral rating. If they hadn't abandoned it and it had a ton of mods then it would be a solid buy. As…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Initially it looks promising, but is actually quite shallow. The events are very repetitive and quite boring (e.g. my courtship attempts for one character broke four times due to disagreement on a theatrical play - this is just ridiculous). Social interactions are made as quite stupid mini-game of capturing nodes. Interface is not very informative, though the tooltips are quite good. If you want a big game of dynasty managing, just play CK. If you want a small game with character interaction,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: Promising game, but hindered by bugs. The game is promising and I had fun with it. It's a little like Crusader Kings III, but instead of painting the map with your color, you are trying to go up the feudal hierarchy. Unfortunately the game is super buggy (and sometimes the UX is so bad that it often feels like there is a bug). Example: after going through the "end game" content of the civil war, winning it, and once the peace was brokered with me as the new king and... nothing…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is pretty, and I really like the idea, but there is almost no depth to it. A lot of reviewers compare this to CKIII, which is fair in terms of vague generalities, but this isn't in the same league in literally any way. All of the negotiations/battles are pure rock-paper-scissors, and you won't want to actively participate in the negotiations/battles after your first try because it is neither fun nor especially engaging. Yay for automate button on those. As of now, less than 6% of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has three main problems. One small, one big, and one catastrophic. The small problem is the fugly AI art. Even if you want to claim that AI art is improving, this art very clearly dates from the early days of AI and is some of the most eye-sore inducing art AI has ever produced. If that bothers you, then beware. The big problem is the general lack of mechanical death. There are some basic ideas there are very good, but overall, the lack of ability for a noble house to rebel, in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feels more like a board game rather than a grand strategy game, hence why I refunded. While I personally dislike it, the game doesn't have any actual flaws that I saw, so if your into board games like Catan, give it a shot.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tldr at the bottom. Great Houses of Calderia is beautiful looking game and though its ui is unpolished and mechanics are somewhat rather lacking to most games - the more you play the game the more you find that its main focus is in Diplomacy. Most of the things you find in games like Crusader Kings, you would find in this game but its realm keeping is much more involved like if it would be in Victoria 3. You don't play as the ruler but rather the Family and majority of this game revolves…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Studio has been disbanded and there are game-breaking bugs still present.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A friend of mine was asking me why should he gets that game instead of CK3 and my answer was simply: because it’s not CK3, dude. Cultural diplomacy plays an important role in this strategy. The skills of your royal family members and many other factors are also important. I was especially pleased that the game weighs around 3 GB while the games page says that installation requires 20 GB.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →CK2 if it didn't have depth and was just ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in general. Fairly possible to obsess over and explore therefore possible to enjoy but like the game and story itself is just like CK2 if it was simplified into card board game. Not very rewarding nor fun from my 13 hours experience with it. Very mediocre.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The general idea is OK, but the execution is severely lacking. There is no army management, it's not possible to move units between armies, leave a garrison without a family member permanently attached to it. Trade and diplomatic negotiations get repetitive and boring really fast. Plus you will constantly have a feeling that you don't actually control what's happening. I regret buying this and wasting time on it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay. It is a well rounded game, an alternative to CK that actually permit a more tall build rather than map painting, and has an interesting storyline flow, with the bonus perk that house ideals actually give you the ability to roleplay more. The social conflict actually make war and intrigue more interesting. It has overall less pathos of a CK, but not having your infedel spouse poison your ruler, and thus ruining a few hour well rounded plot, for me it's actually a bonus. BUT In that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game it self has a lot of potential. The issue why I can't recommend it is mainly because of the constant crashes I play for 5 - 10 minutes it crashes... Besides that the game play it self is not well balanced. for example one house who hates your guts could be significantly weaker but they just keep declaring war on you and only spamming the weakest troops. This seems wacky because one of the in game mechanics is if you win the war you get to take a citizen which is basically gold.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is not ready yet. Cant recommend it right now if game crashes in every 10 minutes. If the problems are fixed then it would be a rather good game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The idea behind the game is nice, but the user experience is not. Way too difficult, not enough guidance, the game is just brutal for a new player and does nothing to ease you into it. I've hit New Game 3 times in the first 24 hours after installing hoping it was down to luck, but no such thing. It's a pitty.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →started off interesting but found the game mechanics and combat and diplomacy simple and boring
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly there are many similarities between this and CKIII. However, the style, the game-play and most of its features are just different enough for it to be unique and a more laid back experience. And the family management system is much better so I don't have to murder/disinherit my children so that my firstborn doesn't have to endure the consequences of our fiefdom fracturing because of my characters weak pullout game. 8/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed playing this game - city development - family bonds - diplomacy - battles - tactics Lots of good ingredientd Of course it's not perfect But it's really worth a try if you like grand strategy and medieval settings 😃
