What people are saying
Split audience: nostalgia and visuals praised, but gameplay and bugs heavily criticized.
Many players appreciate the game's faithful representation of the G.I. Joe franchise, with one calling it "a must have for G.I. Joe fans" and another noting it "completely captures the GI Joe feel from the 80s cartoon." The retro-inspired art and character sprites are frequently highlighted as strong points. [4][13]
However, a significant portion of reactions criticize the game as "very basic" and mediocre, with complaints about simplistic combat, boring stage design, and numerous bugs. Some players allege the developers have abandoned the game, with one stating "Abandoned by the developers after the initial release" and another reporting game breaking bugs throughout the experience. Joe for NES asks you to beat the game 3 times to fully finish it (the devs did this with a bunch of their games like Low G Man) but uh, this doesn't exactly feel like a good reward for beating a game 3 times... ...oh wait, I forgot to press the A button, HERE'S the real reward.
unlabelledView post →This game is one of the worst beat-em-ups I have ever played. The combat is about as sparse and boring as you can get with only small handful of moves per character that aren't that satisfying to use. Stage design is utterly boring, despite a decent amount of enemy variety almost every stage feels exactly the same with the pacing and the enemy encounters making everything blend together. Occasionally it throws a big mid boss style enemy at you that provide at least something of interest…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay, less than an hour on this but if you think that's not enough time to get the handle of a beat 'em up, then take this review with a grain of salt. This is a 5/10, do not recommend. How it plays: The controls work well enough, but there definitely feels a like a little bit of stiffness, as if you don't have as much control as you want. Every character has their typical light punch combo string, a heavy attack that can be charged, two different run attack for light and heavy, one jumping…

Or why not sit down with your 3 friends for no reason and play King of the Monsters or The Simpsons arcade game.
unlabelledView post →Very mediocre and disappointing. It's like your minimal effort, bog-standard beat 'em up with a G.I. Joe skin. Controls are acceptable but very few moves and a boring super attack for each character that recharges too quickly. The bosses are lame, buggy and can practically be beaten without getting hit back. The graphics have nice colors, you recognize the characters, but some vehicles and decors are poor. The animations in the intro and conclusion are worse than in the old animated cartoon…

In all honestly I haven't played a beat'em up this bad in a long long time. In fact, I can't even think of one that is worse... and I've played a lot. I was a huge fan of Ninja Turtles, Double Dragon, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Final Fight, The Simpsons, The Punisher, Battletoads and many others. Every one of those games is more fun than this one. The only thing going for this game is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game breaking bugs throughout the experience with one on the second to last level that is impassable. Developers seem to have abandoned this without any updates to fix these glaring issues. The game is incomplete at best. A shame for such a wonderful IP.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Easily what I have been wanting for and from GI Joe forever. It plays smooth, the nods to the lore and toys and cartoons all hit, and the amount of care in here as a Joe fan is remarkable. More than anything, it is just *fun.* No, it isn't anything revolutionary, but nostalgic beat'em-ups are not supposed to be. They just need to be fun, and engaging, and I am enthralled. Top to bottom, if you are a GI Joe fan, or a fan of old arcade games, I cannot, at all, recommend this enough. Play it,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The only redeeming quality of this game, is showing you how fantastic some of the recent beat'em up games have been. It might be worth 3 dollars on sale to make you understand the difference between a bad and good beat'em ups. This is a must play in the "what not to do" category. It's just a very bad game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't fall for the nostalgia bait Of all these new wave of beat'em ups, G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra is the most painfully meh. It doesn't do anything to elevate the genre. It's the most bare bones, basic game possible. The game has no story (EDIT: apparently, the game has a story. There are a few cutscenes that play, but for some reason they didn't play for me on first playthrough, maybe because I changed the language to brazilian portuguese. Either way, it doesn't matter much because the game…

The gameplay is simplistic, and the music—while not terrible—is unremarkable (I mean it's not bad, but I wasn't rocking out to it or anything). The character sprites are the real standout, but everything else feels like it needed more time in the oven. I’m giving this a thumbs up purely because I’m a G.I. Joe fan and likely the only way you'll get any enjoyment from this is if you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is the worst beat em-up I've ever played on Steam. Shame on the game developer for releasing a buggy mess of a game. Dumb design choices and overall a bland game. I beat it but I had to force myself to just because I didn't want my money wasted. Never buy a game on impulse like I did before reading the reviews and for those interested in buying it - don't because "knowing is half the battle".
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →⚠️ Recommended, but wait for bug fixes and maybe a sale. On the positive side, it has good visuals and representation of the G.I. Joe franchise. It has serviceable beat'em up mechanics that I had fun with overall. It has most of the staple mechanics of the genre you would expect. Blocking and countering aren't common though, so that was a nice change. I think people sometimes forget how basic some of the most beloved classic beat'em ups are. It's not as well done as other notable recent games…

I was greatly looking forward to this game as I was a huge fan of GI Joe as a kid. The trailers made this seem basically like Shredder's Revenge with the GI Joe license. I can tell you it is not. Gameplay is boring. I scored more damage with the light attack combo than the hard attack single move even charged up, and the heavy attacks need to be faster. Too much…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredibly basic beat 'em up. Stylistically (visuals) chasing TMNT Shredder's Revenge. Gameplay is VERY classic and boring. Your choices for attacks are basically regular weak attack combos (three hits), a charge power attack cuz apparently everyone needs one to deal with blocking enemies, or two weak and one power for a situational thing. You've also got a jump attack and a normal and heavy running attack. You can pick up enemies from the ground. Most weapons suck. Music is also pretty meh.…

unlabelledView post →I can only recommend this game from a nostalgia standpoint, and only then if it was under $10. This is an incredibly mediocre side-scrolling brawler. The character moves aren't interesting, the enemies often just stand there and take your hits, and most of the bosses have a very easy to find safe spot where you can hit them but they won't hurt you. The only thing fun about this was just seeing all the old characters I loved as a kid.

unlabelledView post →Very basic beat 'em up. Was fun recognizing the vehicles and cannon fodder characters from my childhood toys, but there aren't any interesting combos, movesets, upgrades, or interesting unlockables. Most of the bosses can be beat without getting hit due to their lack of intelligence and super easy attack patterns that sometimes don't even register a hit. Fun for a stage or two of quick nostalgia but probably not worth playing through unless you have 3 other friends, and even then, they'll…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A must have for G.I. Joe fans. This is the arcade game we've been waiting for since the eighties. Of course there's not much story-line, simplistic action and the game itself is bug-city. But this is what those old side-scrolling beat'em-up games were all about. Most fans of the franchise are old enough to remember what I mean. The game doesn't just include the must-have Cobra boss villain lot. They also added some real obscure baddies as well. Like Night Stalkers, Ninja Vipers and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I must say this game is very basic. I bought it because I am a massive fan of GiJoe. I played it once and I will never touch it again.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty good game for GI Joe. Doesn't play all that great, but I guess it could be worse. The characters and sprites make this game better than what it is. Maybe with patches and updates, it'll get better. Probably one of those games you'll want to catch on sale, not really worth the full price.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Saw the bad reviews. Had to see what was so bad about this game. Easy to learn UI for the casual gamer? Check! Story ripped straight of the 80s? Big check! Easy to recognize characters and vehicles? You know it, baby! I'm sorry, but that Cobra PSA had me in tears! a beautiful tribute to better times!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game, as I love GI Joe and I was excited by this release, but... + The character sprites look really good and faithful to the cartoon. + Nostalgia effect. + The rockin' GI Joe theme in the credits is amazing. - The game crashes. Nothing like getting into a run and then having the game lock on you. - It won't even let me play in full screen on my monitor or tv. - The price is ridiculous and is a major cash grab as they are feeding off of our…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The gameplay isn't bad. The concept isn't bad either. But the big issue is how buggy the game is. The discs I collected didn't add up by the end of level 4. Not only that, but I couldn't progress and had to turn off the game, then turn it back on By level 5, I made it to a coliseum like area and I literally couldn't progress. I was soft locked into a position where no progress could be made and I couldn't move forward.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Probably one of the best GI Joe games out there, though if you're not a fan of arcadey beat 'em up experiences, probably not for you. Pros: In-Game art direction is well done, the characters all play very differently and are fun to experiment with. Nice and short experience for the price, great replay-ability, and the backgrond music is an absolute bop. Cons: While I can tell what they were going for with the opening cinematic, the animation just...doesn't work for me.

Essence20 (the system) does some interesting stuff, and the game is more Saturday Morning shenanigans than it is specops combat. With the assets they probably could have made something better but it just doesn't feel complete. Sometimes I got stuck in the background. Watching a cutscene always results in a hard game freeze which you have to exit the game. On top of all that very imbalanced levels and bosses. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall, I think it is a fun game and I am recommending it. But yes, it has flaws. To start with, we are looking at an old school beat'em up. It doesn't bring anything new or interesting to the genre: this game could have been released in the early 1990s. Recent games like Shredder's Revenge and Double Dragon Gaiden did much better to bring interesting twists to a classic beat'em up style. There is a bit of replayability however; many game modes that provide alterations to the game can be…
