First Cow
In the 1820s, a taciturn loner and skilled cook travels west to Oregon Territory, where he meets a Chinese immigrant also seeking his fortune. Soon the two team up on a dangerous scheme to steal milk from the wealthy landowner’s prized Jersey cow—the first, and only, in the territory. From TMDB

And unlike so many films it leaves space for the viewer to fill it in, and different people will do that (including the ending, I suspect) in different ways. Moving. Recommended.
unlabelledView post →First Cow. Was getting the best reviews of Reichardt’s career and had the highest per-screen-average of any of her films a week before lockdown. She pulled it hoping to get it back in theaters later but then it quietly went to PVOD that summer. A real loss for a movie like that

The viewer watches the mundane aspects of daily life, like stealing milk to make pastries. The film ends abruptly but family friendly. Not satisfying. 🫤 -E

Tyler did the soundtrack to First Cow, a splendid and quiet little movie a few years back. #MutualMusic www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdHJ...

unlabelledView post →First Cow is the slowest heist movie in cinema, and a story of a great friendship. I love a good slow movie and Kelly Reichardt has made a lot of good ones. 4/4 no notes #filmsky and I've also seen Certain Women and Meek's Cutoff which I also consider 4s.

unlabelledView post →Glad to finally see Kelly Reichardt’s latest film, though I can understand why it didn’t get a cinema release here. It has fine performances from Michelle Williams and André (3000) Benjamin, but it’s a minor-key work compared with First Cow with not enough in the way of a story to fully engage.

unlabelledView post →Today I am using my inside voice to promote the work of Kelly Reichardt, queen of the quiet character study. Her highest-rated film is WENDY AND LUCY, but I think her best film is FIRST COW, a western that was my #1 film of 2020. #WomanDirectors #WomensHistoryMonth #21 #Filmsky 📽️ 🧵 [22/32]
unlabelledView post →Kelly Reichardt's First Cow tonight. It's crazy how stacked 2019 was for film. As if the form knew our senses of justice and empathy needed a boost for the decade on deck. Also, Lily Gladstone supremacy. #FilmSky

unlabelledView post →I watched Kelly Reichert's "First Cow" at a small local movie theater. It is a wonderful work, and there are many good scenes, but what moved me most was the scene where Cookie said, "If the blueberry is available” I was struck by the use of the word “available”.
unlabelledView post →366 Days of Film: Day 261 - First Cow. Kelly Reichardt’s (Meek’s Cutoff) attention to detail is incredible in this film about a forager and a Chinese man who befriend each other in trapper country and steal milk from Oregon’s first cow, in the hope of making their fortune in crowd-pleasing biscuits.
unlabelledView post →I’m still mad because on the last day before the Covid lockdown started, I had the choice between watching The Hunt and First Cow, and saw The Hunt instead, planning to see First Cow the next day. B/w when the movie started and ended, everything shut down 😀 so no First Cow

As usual, shot in 16mm, 4:3 by Christopher Blauvelt, the mossy forest of Pacific Northwest has never been more beautiful. And with gentle, fitting music by William Tyler, First Cow is one of those rare, perfect movies in every single way. It's something you want to cherish for years to come. Now I want some oily cake with honey! #firstcow #kellyreichardt

I really liked The Mastermind, I thought it was very funny and sort of darkly ironic in a way that's pretty unlike the others of hers I've seen.
