In EO2 the fights are much shorter, target the enemies weakness and kill them before they kill you. EO3 is somewhere in the middle between EO1 and 2. Unlike most people I'd say: If you are choosing from the OG trilogy, choose 2 or 3. -EO1: There are very few events in the dungeon so exploring becomes kinda boring, if you build your Protector and Medic the right way it is basically…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay gonna say this, I enjoy Etrian Odyssey 3. Its good and reminds me of my times playing similar games on my 3DS... Please can we just remove the Denuvo though? I mainly play on my steam deck and I can't play this game while waiting to go to work on my Steam Deck. Its so lovely to not have internet near me at all and seeing "Sorry we can't let you play our single player JRPG because we can't connect online" -3-
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a big fan of the series on the DS/3DS I was excited to see it finally come to PC. While the game has been optimized to work with pretty much any method of play you want ( you can even play with just a mouse should you desire!) The asking price is wayyyyyy too high for the content provided. Still sprites (though now in HD) and pretty basic visuals are NOT worth $40, especially for the earlier entries. If you want to get one of the etrian games, get this one, and only if its $15 or less.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Etrian Odyssey is a series I absolutely adore. I've played every single one, and I consider it Atlus' best franchise of them all. I was delighted at the news of HD remasters, and of the three that got the treatment, this one is my favorite. However, EO3 itself is not a game I would recommend to anyone, and this remaster is a very faithful adaptation of the original, flaws and all. If you're an EO diehard, you already know what this is and you already want it. If you're a newcomer or just…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This version of the game lacks the improvements that exist in more recent Etrian Odyssey games, but is also missing NPC Voice lines and the shortcut indicators that existed even in the original game. Without these indicators, even if you're manually mapping the dungeon, you will find yourself missing many of the shortcuts and secret rooms unless you walk with your face pressed against every wall sideways looking for an interact prompt in the corner of the screen.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm about 80% sure this is testing the waters for the release of new entries in the series on single-screen platforms. Vote with your wallets, folks!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As expected from SEGA, this is a lazy port of the Atlus Classic EO3. Its good for people that have never played it before, but there are significant issues regarding the port. 1 - for its price point, you would expect a fully remastered HD edition for EO3. Instead, you get a port that has significant issues wrt to performance and stability. (Look through the reviews, and notice you have significant recurrence of corrupted saves and stuttering. Similarly I have also experienced significant…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Etrian Odyssey 3 is a pretty good game. This game doesn't bring back a single class from the older games, which is actually a good thing. Not because the older classes were bad, but because... well, the new ones are really good. Not a single class is actual bait that you can waste your time with. Some classes might be worse than others in the early game, but in the end everybody gets their time to shine, even if some shine brighter than others. This time around there are no notable design or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the etrian odyssey series to death but there is no universe in which i'll ever pay forty dollars for this singular game. It's not that the quality isn't there, but the games themselves simply don't have wide enough appeal and the quality of production simply doesn't match the price. Call me when they give these the persona 5 treatment in terms of polish and i'll consider forty bucks. Otherwise buy this on a sale. It is genuinely one of the best dungeon blobbers you can get though and a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got into the series around 2018 and 100%'d the DS version of Etrian Odyssey 3, so I 100%'d the HD remaster on Expert difficulty. 210 hours in-game time, 80 to beat the first ending. I still really love this game. Of the HD trilogy, it's the best one to get into for newcomers: great class diversity, excellent music, interesting enemy formations, memorable NPCs, the introduction of subclassing, etc. I may love EO1 a ton, but even I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. That said, if any of the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unlike EO 1 & 2 HD, EO 3 HD is the best version of EO3. It's the only one that didn't receive an 'Untold' remaster/remake It really would have been better to just port the 'Untold' games instead and make an EO Untold 3. I have a gut feeling they might, which is why I'm not confident in my purchase of the OGs These games are also insanely over priced. Even after spending $16 via discount, I still feel a bit scammed. These games should be $10 base price These aren't even the best versions of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're going to play only one of the Etrian Odyssey games available on Steam, this is the one. There's better balance between classes (though not perfect) and in general more interesting classes and skills. Dungeon design is better, in particular shortcuts, though they are extremely reliant on wall-humping once you get past the first stratum. No clue why they have distinct shortcut tells in the first stratum only to go back to the tried-and-true wall-humping on areas you think will…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →!!! Gamer Waring !!! Gamer Warning !!! This game can be VERY punishing when it comes to character building and progression. (Especially if you're planning on playing on expert difficulty.) I would actually recommend you take the time to do some research and plan out your builds in advance, otherwise you risk sharing the same fate as this poor soul, who had to realise that his run was unsalvageable 40 hours in :')
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Etrian Odyssey games are really fun RPGs for a certain category of people. If you enjoy being challenged and spending time theorycrafting, this is a game for you. If you don't minding rethinking your entire team composition to overcome certain obstacles, this is a game for you. If you're down for making progress, one tiny step at a time, in a large dungeon where even regular encounters could kill you, this is a game for you. On the other hand, if what you're looking for is an immersive,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: - Great story and characters. There’s a lot more characters than Etrian Odyssey 1 (EO1) and Etrian Odyssey 2 (EO2). Story also diverges at the middle so there’s more replayability. - The dungeon-crawling + mapping gameplay was fun as usual. - Completing Main quests and side quests also provide exp which was neat. You can use these bonus non-combat exp to level up your fodder characters used to harvest resources. - You can now rest in the labyrinth at specific points using “tents”. -…

Disclaimer: I played it using a Gamepad Intro Etrian Odyssey is a first-person dungeon crawler with a pretty cool mapping mechanic that nevers gets old, his presentation is pretty straightforward and menu-based outside dungeons, but it still manages to make the player feel the city of Armoroad as a second home. The narrative is pretty minimalistic and text-based, the main appeal of the game is…

The new classes are some of the best in the entire series. Every class feels unique instead of being a simple variation of something you've already played. Then, once subclassing becomes available, suddenly every party can be customized in ways the previous games simply couldn't offer. EVERY CLASS IS VIABLE NOW Now, lets talk about something new in the game,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is good for a very specific experience. I'd recommend skipping EO1 and EO2 to start here. If you played old school dungeon crawlers like Wizardry, this is an anime descendant. If you like the thought of charting out your own map, finding all the shortcuts, and cracking the code, this is a great game. If you are willing to attack an actively hostile combat system, this is a great game. About combat: Combat pulls zero punches. You can and will have a single unlucky random…

EO3 is a very punishing and hard game that when things click, feels very satisfying to complete. + Plenty of classes to play around with, all of them range from decent to really good. + Team building and synergy are finally a real thing that massively rewards you. + Subclassing further adds a layer to this, although the good choices here end up rather overpowered compared to the rest. + Creating…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best JRPG series ever made. Great music, appealing art, and rock solid, straightforward JRPG gameplay with a cartography mechanic that never gets old. Contrary to what you may expect from the anime aesthetic, the game treats you with respect and maturity, both in gameplay and story. You are expected to use your head and have a willingness to experiment with all the tools available to you if you wish to succeed (on Expert difficulty). Newcomers to the series can freely start…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this years ago for the DS. It consumed much of my college life in those days.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved the games on DS, love them even more on my big ass monitor in 165 FPS with automap and making notes with keyboard and mouse. The price just was ridiculous which is the case with Sega often times. For 20 bucks, yeah, sure, definitely. Now bring the latest titles over and don't sell them for 60 you dinguses.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't mind the playtime, I played the original game to death on DS. Etrian Odyssey III is a charming Wizardry-inspired dungeon crawler with deceptively deep system, deep party building, and sandbox-esque dungeon. If you can only afford one game, definitely pick this one. The first and second games are unbalanced mess and have several questionable level design decisions. This franchise is known for its anti-handhold nature. You are inclined to experiment and use every piece of information…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dungeoning is fun but everything else lowkey outdated. A lot of info are obscure and you will need to pull up some guides if you actually want a good comp. Like another review said, game is counter-intuitive in moist aspects and is definitely NOT a safe blind buy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Etrian Odyssey III HD is what I would call the pinnacle of Team-building, Dungeon-Crawling RPG gameplay. For anyone looking for a good story, this ain't it. Save that for a possible future port of the Etrian Odyssey: Untold series. For now, if you're looking for a banger RPG, this is your stop. EO:III HD remaster is an excellent port of the original EO:III. Now, there's faster movement, quicker battles, new difficulty options for newcomers and very intuitive UI. Basically, all the modern…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I did not enjoy the interface with the Steam Deck, This was the specific reason I purchased the game, Dealing with the map is clumsy, but the game otherwise runs great.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is in my opinion the best game in the trilogy, it improves everything it could be improved from their predecessors and adds new mechanics and systems that made the game more complete. The story is also a bit more large, featuring three different endings. Sadly the game only changes two bosses between routes, which is not enough in my opinion, I was expecting a different 5th Stratum, at least. Even with that replayability problem, the story is interesting enough, the character designs…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Based purely on whether I would recommend this to someone? No. I'm having fun with it so far, but the game has some bizarre balancing and design idiosyncrasies that I don't think most players would have fun with. One example is that there is only a small area at the foot of the stairs to the first dungeon level which is 'safe' for players to adventure in. As soon as you set foot outside that area your novice adventurers will constantly run into big lynxes that one shot a character every turn,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's the game where EO finally got good. It's hard to say that a 15 year later port is worth the same price as the original release, but it's a great game and unlike 1 and 2 isn't entirely replace by a superior 3DS remake.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has the best in-game map making functionality I've experienced in a game (I've also never played an EO game before this one). I want to like Eye of the Beholder, but my options are "grab some graph paper like it's the 90's and take 6 hours to clear the first floor" or "download a mod that does all the mapping for you, which takes away some of the excitement of exploration". This game strikes the perfect middle ground of making your own map, but doing so in the game, where I can just move…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the best game out of the trilogy, it has more of a focus on story this time around. There are less maps overall in this game, but the quality of them are far better than the previous games, the puzzles are very fun to map out and the game is well balanced

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the best Etrian Odyssey out of the three on Steam. That being said, announce Etrian Odyssey VI next year. Thanks!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A lot of people say EO3 is where the game got good, and they are right, up to a point. EO3 suffers from several late game problems that all feed into each other, namely: - You'll probably hit the level cap (70; yes post-game dragons increase it but thats post-game) at the beginning of the 4th stratum... but there's a 5th stratum just in the base game. This leads to a lot of issues because: - Late game enemies are WAY TOO SPONGY. - Monk unarmed scales with level and thus stops scaling due…

unlabelledView post →I just started out and I have to say. This may be the best gamer in the series on Steam so far. (fingers crossed for a port of EO4!) The difficulty is balanced a lot better so far, all new classes that borrow some things from the first two but give enough of a spin to it to be interesting. *summons a pet cow to end the review*
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm obsessed with drawing maps. Makes me feel like I'm part of the adventure, maybe tagging along behind the party out of the way of the fighting :) Delightful, old school dungeon crawler with incredible depth regarding party composition. 100% recommended to any budding cartographers out there
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a great port & whilst it takes a while to acclimate to the new set-up configuration (as opposed to the original Nintendo DS stylus duel-screen layout), it pulls off the experience wonderfully. I was personally hoping for a fully remastered Untold EO3 game (which is the only game in the series not yet remade/reimagined) but this is a great port with a lot of useful options; Fast Walk, Auto-battles, Sped-up battles, a new difficulty setting, HD visuals, an auto-map function, etc.. Well…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really love this game. I love the Etrian Odyssey series. This is the series that really got me into grid-based dungeon crawlers as a genre. And this is a really good port, I like playing it with a controller to maneuver my party while I use my mouse to do the mapping and it feels so fluid and easy and reminiscent of the original DS controls. My precautions to anyone who isn't already familiar with this series is that this is a game for people who love and are experienced with turn-based…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Boring. I don't want to make my own map, I don't want to go through several menus just to exit the game, I don't want a bunch of info suddenly thrown at my face before I can start playing, I don't want to name individual characters when I can have a roster of 30, I don't want to deal with several menus with little explanation from the very beginning of the game. I lost motivation to keep playing pretty quickly, I don't want to get frustrated without a clear idea what the payoff is (it wasn't…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game. Play on Expert if you're not a weenie. That's the original difficulty from before the world went soft.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, let me start by saying I skipped the other two re-releases because I played the 3DS versions. I had originally expected this to be of the same quality of the 3DS version- it is not, a fully faithful re-release of the DS version. With that out of the way, I won't hold that against this game for this review. How the game functions, it's still great. Beyond the obvious graphical upgrades that would have been amazing, honestly only the dungeon crawling would need the updates. The town…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a lover of the franchise of Etrian Odyssey, I'm really grateful about this HD remake from ATLUS and SEGA. This reminds me of the time when I truly really enjoyed a video game, on a weekend afternoon when I was still a high school student. Here're some hints that you may find useful later: 1. Buffing the party is important. In EO3, the Prevent Order skill makes a row of your party immune to ailments (wear off after nullifying), use it properly. 2. Due to subclassing, the original class…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Calling this a lazy port would be an insult to lazy ports. Comparing what was done with this game to what was done with Untold 1/2 shows how far did fatlus truly fall over the past decade. It's basically AI art upscale with some (badly needed but also very basic) UI tweaks; they didn't even upgrade draw distance, it's still walls blatantly spawning out of void three tiles away. Furthermore the map drawing, the main gimmick of the series, was ported in possibly the worst way possible, with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Started the game, and got a game over in just 30 minutes. Yep! That's Etrian Odyssey!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended *only* at $15 or less. $40 is insane for a Nintendo DS game with some quality of life improvements. Complete rip-off. The regular price for this is probably the most overpriced game in my entire Steam library, along with the other Etrian Odyssey HD titles. It's a very good game and plays well with mouse and keyboard. The whole trilogy should be $40 or less.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No guidance on what is acceptable for the first level map. Can't pass it unless you map it "correctly" so stuck there. That's just bad game design. Glad I didn't pay full price for this, it will no get shelved until I feel like researching how to make the map the way they want (which they dont tell you), which is honestly F**king Bu!!♥♥♥♥♥. So no I dont recommend this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay the game is actually pretty good. but I was like stuck for like 1 and half hour because the guard keep saying the map isn't enough, even though I explored every single tile. I didn't know you actually need to draw the wall as well. I don't know if it was explained in tutorial or by NPCs but that got me stuck. I had to search internet to know that there was Auto-Map and set it to "Full" function, so it can automatically map the walls as well. I bought the game because of Waifu…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Etrian Odyssey 3 is the best of the three games in the HD remasters. If you like RPGs that are difficult and get you hooked, you will really like this game. The gameplay is super simple, and the mapping works kind of surprisingly well on the Steam version. The amount of freedom you have with making your own parties+subclassing makes building parties very enjoyable and thanks to Picnic mode it's really easy to grind should the need ever arise. (Like when making up for lost levels when resetting…
