Escape from Ever After is a 2026 role-playing video game developed by Sleepy Castle Studio and published by HypeTrain Digital. Taking inspiration from the early Paper Mario games, it follows Flynt Buckler, a fairytale hero who discovers that his storybook world has been taken over by Ever After Inc., a corporation from the real world, and infiltrates the company as an employee to dismantle it from within. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm flabbergasted and shook. I don't know how two people made this. The puzzles, combat, length, atmosphere; all of it is at least double A quality, if not triple. The second to last dungeon might be my favorite of any Paper Mario game and it's not even Paper Mario. There's not much I could say that hasn't already been said by other positive reviews. I typically list pros and cons, but this was all pros. Hard stop. Believe in your dreams. Make art. Play games.

Seeing our game hit #1 on Steam’s New & Trending (and still there!), with ‘Very Positive’ reviews, is honestly crazy! Good luck to everyone on their journey to take down Ever After Inc! 📖✨ #IndieGame #GameDev #Steam

The game is inspired by Paper Mario, and you can tell it's made with love. The soundtrack for the prologue is jazzy and just feels nice to listen to as you go through the starting area. The characters somewhat remind me of Shrek at times, with your starting partner being sarcastic, dry, and wanting to murk all her enemies. With the…

If you love Paper Mario 64/TTYD, I urge you to check it out!! ALSO ONE OF YOUR PARTNERS IS A CUTE WOLF NAMED WOLFGANG WHO IS SO PRECIOUS AND I LOVE HIM SO MUCH AAHHHHHH 😍
unlabelledView post →Often when there is a Paper Mario-inspired title, one might question whether it's worth checking out-- as a large part of the appeal of that series is the titular plumber himself and the world he inhabits. A game can have similar mechanics, along with similar aesthetics, it can draw a lot of inspiration from that beloved series, but it's the execution that ultimately matters. To that I say--- I can't remember the last time I couldn't put down a game. Escape Ever After manages not only to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played all PaperMario-likes so far. Rainbow Billy (which is getting a sequel) deviated a bit much for my taste. Born of Bread was competent but meh and I couldnt be bothered to finish it. Bug Fables was very good but felt cheaply made, and The Outbound Ghost was a disaster. Escape from Ever After is up there along with Bug Fables vying for the crown, however, its not a perfectly polished experience. The cracks are visible, and Paper Mario likes have to compete with the polish of Nintendo…

unlabelledView post →Jeez, there's so many great-looking games from the past few weeks that I've not had a chance to touch. Escape From Ever After is a very Paper Mario-inspired RPG that has a *near-perfect* user score so far, and seems to be selling well. The only other game like it to do that well was Bug Fables.
unlabelledView post →I lost track of time and played it for start to finish in a single sitting of 19+ hours (with the Pit of 100 Trials equivalent, lacking just a few minor collectibles). It's that good. Slightly harder than its inspiration, but very very fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Been playing this game Escape From Ever After that recently released, Paper Mario fans should definitely check this out. It’s such a charming time.
unlabelledView post →I completely lost track of time while playing this awesome game, spending hours enjoying it without even noticing. I’ve just finished the first part, and it’s already proving to be everything I was hoping for and more: - Excellent writing, charming characters, beautiful visuals, and a compelling story; - Great gameplay with an amazing turn-based combat system, featuring fun action-based timing, item management, and multiple difficulty settings; - A semi-open world with rewarding exploration…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Paper Mario, especially Paper Mario 2, holds an incredibly special place in my heart. I even have a Punio tattoo. It is a game I played with my brother as a kid, and we would take turns making up voices for the characters. As adults, we have an incredibly complicated relationship due to severe mental health struggles. But this game pulled me right back in time, sitting with my older brother, making funny voices and laughing until we cried. I hope that some day we will play Escape from Ever…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my favorite games is Paper Mario and I thought Bug Fables was better, but this blows the genre out of the park. Th battles, puzzles, and characters never fail to be fun and exciting.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →✅ Escape from Ever After beaten What a ride! Pet peeve of mine is when indies call themselves "inspired by X" and then miss the point of those classics entirely. Not this game: it is a worthy successor to the PM64 and TTYD. And uhh hot take...I liked this more than TTYD. Gem of a game! Go buy it.
unlabelledView post →Only three more days until Escape from Ever After releases! This is an RPG inspired by the classic Paper Mario games! I’ve been waiting for this game and following the development over the past few years and it looks incredible!
unlabelledView post →I’ve been playing Escape From Ever After Inc. and I have to say I love this game right now. I find it charming, simple yet enjoyable, with a style like Paper Mario. Seeing iconic storybook characters come to life in a whole new light is fun and interesting.

unlabelledView post →Only a few hours in, but I can say this is the true spiritual successor to the classic Paper Mario 64/TTYD games. The Visuals, Writing, Characters, Charm, and OST, they nailed it but somehow at the same time delivers its own identity. The turn based battles feels familar to the classic Paper Mario games, but yet manage to incorperate some very interesting mechanics and combo that still feels fresh (and surprisingly can be deep) with good variety. Been following the project casually since…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In recent years there's been a lot of attempts to capture the soul of old, dead series and revive them for an audience longing for what they once had. Paper Mario isn't dead - not literally anyway - but the modern entries are near unrecognizable from the old save for the Thousand-Year Door remake, and so they too have been a target of such attempts. To revive what was once lost. Escape From Ever After is the most recent product of the indie spiritual successor fervor, joining Bug Fables and…

From the humor to the combat, the music to the script, the game was simply great from start to finish. If you are a fan of Paper Mario, check out this game for a similar style and combat system. Even if you aren't and you're looking for a great story with amazing characters (I love you Wolfgang <3) then give it a try! I played some on PC and quite a lot on…

unlabelledView post →this game is a decent paper mario clone with some neat ideas and a lot of foundational flaws. this review assumes you already like paper mario and is comparing the two games in that context. things i do like: - i like how this game encourages you to use all your party members and not just stick to one you like. while you can only have two characters out at a time, your main healing skill heals EVERY party member including the ones you don't have out currently, so you do a lot of swapping in…

unlabelledView post →This was a great spiritual successor to the original Paper Mario and TTYD. Escape from Ever After is a light-hearted, whimsical adventure that explores the usual fantasy tropes and stories that we all know and love and adds a neat little spin on them to breathe fresh life into it. The art style for the game is lovely, the personality of the characters is great, and the music was so enjoyable that I found myself bouncing my head and humming along to several of the tracks as I was playing. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quirky game, takes a lot of mechanics from Paper Mario, with a bit more from Thousand Year Door and creates it in its own style. In a bit of depth from my own experience from the start to completing the game on hard mode - This game has everything that'd feel like a knock off of paper mario when you initially start it. The combat, the tutorials... and even some of the starting puzzles. However... that was just the start of it... eventually when you meet your second partner, the game begins to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So far it plays really nice on the Steam Deck. Gameplay and story are both very fun. Really happy with our Steam version of Paper Mario. Hope the developers will keep the series going.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's clear that lots of love and care went into this project, with a combination of nostalgia and plenty of new ideas that make this Paper Mario-inspired adventure a wonderful and whimsical experience. the music and visuals are lively and fun, the gameplay is tight and intentional, and never feels frustrating. the story and dialogue are interesting and filled with plenty of charm and humour. Escape from Ever After is overall a solid game, and i would give it a strong recommendation.

This game was just an all out good time and a breath of fresh air. I have never played a game like this. What a blast. The puzzles induce an adrenaline that makes you feel like a million bucks after solving each one as you progress through the story.

unlabelledView post →Are you looking to fill the Paper Mario void that exists in your heart? I'd argue this will do. It has it's quirks. I'd say at the price they've nailed the value proposition. I wish it only success. Weird gripes: - Combat has some clarity frustrations with if something is "pointy" or not, I could also be blind & dumb (and it is a very fair possibility) but many times it didn't immediately "click" until after I put my hand on the proverbial hot stove burner - I played this on hard (may be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I still cant believe that this even exists. Such a loving spiritual successor to Paper Maio 64 and TTYD that stands on its own and knocked my socks off. If you at the very least somewhat liked either the first two paper marios, this game is a must. I cannot reccomend this enough. Devs, if yall are reading this, I speak for basically everyone here when I say: Thank you. Thank you so much for this delightful, snazzy, and near-perfect turn based RPG! <3
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a somewhat less ambitious but much better balanced Paper Mario inspired RPG. And the game wears this inspiration on its sleeve - it makes it clear that is where the mechanics for the battle system come from. However, it does more than enough to stand on its own. The set-up for the plot is surprisingly fresh and the side characters are memorable. And it manages to do something that its inspiration never quite could: encouraging players to utilize all partner moves in order to succeed.…

unlabelledView post →Good game, peak Paper Mario content. Only complaint is that the game feels too short. It's somewhat telling as well that the game's content feels compressed, lots of collectables hidden without a lot of effort, and basically all over the place. It feels like there's a star piece item behind every tree, as a more telling example.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh my goodness! Escape from Ever After is such an amazing game! It’s a cute Paper-Mario style RPG with absurd humour about a Fairy Tale World gets invaded by a corporation. Recommend for a cute, relatively relaxing RPG with adorable characters.

unlabelledView post →A fantastic surprise for this first quarter. If you enjoyed the Paper Mario RPG style back in the day, you’ll feel right at home while still finding plenty of personality here. The game is packed with original ideas and charming characters, but the real highlight is the humor. I rarely find myself laughing out loud at games, but this one actually pulled it off. The turn-based combat relies on timing and precision, making the action feel dynamic even if you aren’t usually a fan of the genre. Be…
