Enter the Gungeon
Developer Dodge Roll
Enter the Gungeon is a 2016 bullet hell roguelike video game developed by American studio Dodge Roll and published by Devolver Digital. Set in the firearms-themed Gungeon, gameplay follows several player characters called Gungeoneers as they traverse procedurally generated rooms to find a gun that can "kill the past". The Gungeoneers fight against bullet-shaped enemies, which are fought using both conventional and… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

I enjoyed a few runs here and there, but the lack of permanent upgrades, as seen in a rogue-lite, and the emphasis on horizontal progression, reduced my enjoyment on each subsequent run. This isn't to say the game is awful, I actually think it's great. The sheer amount of content alone is impressive. Each character felt unique, and I know there's a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you enjoy roguelike bullet-hell dungeon crawlers, Enter the Gungeon is absolutely the game for you. From its charming artistic style to its tight gameplay, clever memes, and constant pop-culture references—not to mention the FREE DLC—everything feels crafted with genuine love. You can tell this game was made with passion, and it truly shows. The ability to pause and save is a lifesaver for adults with kids, busy schedules, or unexpected guests. But don’t let the adorable artwork fool you:…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the standard bearers of the action roguelike genre for good reason. Has fun progression and rewards skill play not just overpowered combinations of powerups. They do aim to please in the GUNGEON... as long as that means you asked politely to kill a lot of baddies (at least I hope they're bad guys).

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game design course: “I’m going to make a roguelike.” “Oh yeah? What aspects of rogue do you want to use in your game?” “No, roguelike, it’s a genre of game.” “Yeah, like Rogue.” “No, roguelike. Like Enter the Gungeon.”
unlabelledView post →Probably the steepest learning curve I've ever seen in a video game. It's just downright obscene how unforgiving this game can be for new players. Not just the bullet hellish combat that has you dodging 100s of projectiles on the screen, but also how cryptic the game can be at times. Items have vague descriptions that may not make it clear as to what they do, then you use it and summon a bunch of enemies. The game punishes you for saving items for later by having this stupid rat steal your ammo…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is 100% style over substance. It's neither a good roguelite nor a good bullet hell, yet somehow the worst of both worlds combined. It's an completely unbalanced mess with extremely slow and tedious meta progression, no character building whatsoever and 99% of all items/guns are trash. The dodge roll mechanic goes against everything any real bullet hell shoot em up teaches you and does ultimately more harm than good. Bosses are ridiculous bullet sponges and mid bosses are even worse.…

Here's to many more 🥂 One of the very, very few truly quintessential roguelikes, legitimately in contention for the title of the best roguelike of its era - alongside the likes of The Binding of Isaac and FTL. Better yet, it still holds up well against modern competitors, and the gameplay loop fails to get old due to the effectively infinite combinations of weapons and items to explore and unlock, the ridiculous number of…

unlabelledView post →ENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNter the Gungeon is a pretty dang fun.... theme song! And a pretty dang fun game too, with lots of clear and obvious strengths! BUT, oh man... there are a LOT of flaws to this game too. Thankfully, I think the game is frontloaded with its strongest elements, so perhaps your first 15 hours of this game might be a near flawless good time! But it's possible to extend this game to like *150* hours like I did, because this game does have a lot to find and achievements to hunt,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun... but also demoralising This game can be very fun, just as long as you get some decent drops early on with each run. I can't speak to the full loot pool, but after playing several hours, I can say that most of the guns that drop are useless and are more likely to get you killed from using them. The quality of your run highly depends upon the RNG gods giving you a good weapon for boss killing and a second weapon for trash clearing. This is the reason I can't recommend the game and why I…

unlabelledView post →Enter The Gungeon would be a better game if the dev was forced to design the game over again without massively invincible dodge rolls to bandaid over their dog shit terrible bullet pattern design and shitty enemy design.
unlabelledView post →Dead Estate is best known as 'the one with the titty-witch shopkeeper', but it's a genuinely good halfway point between Isaac and Enter The Gungeon with a TON of unlockables, extra modes, secrets, routes. Just a heap o' game. And if you play as the witch her mum takes over as shopkeeper. It's cute!
unlabelledView post →Yes. Buy this. Enter the Gungeon is among the best roguelites I've ever seen, and it's what first introduced me to both roguelites and bullet hells. It is a game that I keep coming back to even after seeing it all. It's got tons of potential items and guns to unlock, many of them whimsical or a reference that you will be giddy about when you get it. This is one of those games that you can feel the love, not just for the game, but for all of nerd and gaming culture. You will not regret…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very interested and fun concept. Lots of guns and items, but too difficult to be enjoyable. I get that you're supposed to learn about attack patterns. However, even after playing this game for 40 hours, I am nowhere near beating it, and tend to finish playing more frustrated than happy. Lastly, the game design itsself doesn't reward those that are struggling, but does for those that somehow have got the game down and are winning already (more currency without hits and more health if you…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I LOVED this game, but not in the way I loved most roguelikes. What makes ETG stand out to me, is that, it feels VERY fair, and skill based, nearly every single run. It's like resistance training in a way. You start out small, maybe even pathetic in terms of progress and gains. But then you get your first newbie gains, aka you consistently start reaching floor 4 or 5. Then you meet your first real obstacle, dragon in floor 5. You keep trying to break that brick wall, slowly getting better,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can’t quite see the appeal of this game. As a roguelike, its RNG design feels off. There’s a large pool of weapons, but in practice they barely differ beyond DPS. Meanwhile, the maps, enemy encounters, and bosses vary so little that runs feel like pre-designed stages rather than true roguelike experiences. Character building also feels shallow: you rarely get meaningful choices at chests or shops—most of the time you’re stuck with a simple take-it-or-leave-it decision.

A lot of people complain about the difficulty, but that’s one of the things I love about it. I mean people still play darksouls, am I right? You can tell the devs put in blood, sweat and tears to make this game and the creativity really shines through. The sheer amount of variety and just things you can unlock will make you want to keep playing.…

unlabelledView post →Nice game, but... no, thanks. A game that doesn't let me interrupt a gaming session and come back to it, a.k.a. a game without "save and quit", is an instant nope for me. It's sad, because the gameplay seemed promising, but I'm not 14 anymore and I want to play a game whenever I find time, not when the game allows me to. To be clear, I'm not asking for manual saves or auto saves, just a basic "save before I quit". That doesn't clash with a rogue-like design philosophy either, it's simply a…

This is one of the best roguelikes you'd ever play. 80% mechanicall skill, 20% luck, maybe even less luck. You don't need planning, build ideas, or anything other than good reflexes & dodging and experience. Amazing and unique artstyle, and the amount of refrences and the quality of them tells you how deep into gaming the devs are. 10/10, would let the gorgun tongue me
