55 of 55 · most liked first25) Eagles of the Republic. So-so thriller about an actor forced to star as Sisi. Starts really well, sort of loses the run of itself and becomes one of those “this film stars the only person in a dictatorship who doesn’t know they are in a dictatorship” movies.

unlabelledView post →Tarik Saleh's sharp EAGLES OF THE REPUBLIC concerns a popular Egyptian movie star who's pressured into starring in a fawning biopic about the country's terrible president. It starts as a satire and morphs into a thriller. Here's my review:
unlabelledView post →Tarik Saleh’s Eagles of the Republic, opening today, is a compelling, cleverly constructed comedy-thriller satirizing the movie industry and authoritarianism.
unlabelledView post →Fares Fares great as an Egyptian heartthrob actor coerced into appearing in a propaganda film in ‘Eagles of the Republic’. It’s a stylish noir tackling identity & moral compromise, but the murky, unfocused plotting renders this a challenge over 130 minute running time, & comedic moments unsubtle

unlabelledView post →Eagles of the Republic is very good indeed. An Egyptian actor is pressurised by the authorities to play President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in a movie even though they look nothing alike. Feels slightly comical at first but turns extremely sinister as the story unfolds.

unlabelledView post →EAGLES OF THE REPUBLIC #FaresFares is convincing as a glamorous movie star in this Swedish thriller, set in Egypt under al-Sisi. The most arresting scene echoes the 1981 assassination of Sadat, but the rest of the film lacks the kind of energy that might have made it memorable.
