Do the Right Thing
Sal is the Italian owner of a pizzeria in Brooklyn. A neighborhood local, Buggin' Out, becomes upset when he sees that the pizzeria's Wall of Fame exhibits only Italian actors. Buggin' Out believes a pizzeria in a black neighborhood should showcase black actors, but Sal disagrees. The wall becomes a symbol of racism and hate to Buggin' Out and to other people in the neighborhood, and tensions rise. From TMDB

Spike Lee is *not* underrated, but he should be up there with Spielberg, Scorsese, etc. His greatest works shift the needle so hard.
unlabelledView post →"Fight the Power" is the definitive political anthem by Public Enemy, originally commissioned by director Spike Lee for his 1989 film Do the Right Thing. It is widely regarded as one of the most influential songs in music history, recently ranked #2 on Rolling Stone's 2025

My favorite example of a movie that got much of its audience to tell on itself is Spike Lee’s DO THE RIGHT THING, which is in my opinion a masterpiece. www.the-reframe.com/always-do-th...

unlabelledView post →I was asked for Independence Day film recs beyond Jaws, Zodiac, Nashville, & Blow Out. I feel like right now, Do the Right Thing still has the most urgent & vital things to say about America, but my go-to is The Right Stuff, featuring Sam Shepard as Chuck Yeager in the goddamn hero shot of all time.
unlabelledView post →I spent my 4th of July watching a Prince concert and DO THE RIGHT THING. I am making this article free for a day or two because it really punched me in the face again last night. DO THE RIGHT THING is one of the very best films about America. Ever. By anyone. www.drewmcweeny.com/the-hip-pock...

unlabelledView post →Watching DO THE RIGHT THING has me questioning why we are not constantly talking about what a masterpiece this movie is. The opening credits with Rosie Perez dancing is the most iconic. The cinematography, the social commentary that is still relevant. Fills me with passion, joy & rage. 🎥 #filmsky

unlabelledView post →Rewatch: Do the Right Thing (1989, dir. Spike Lee). I really enjoyed revisiting this old teenage fave, a vivid mural of a film about community tensions in Brooklyn. Released a couple of years before the Rodney King beating and LA Riots, it was and remains a relevant movie. 1/3
