It hasn't changed in both the best and worst ways possible. Déjà Vu is a pioneer game in the point & click adventure genre, making a visual transition from the classic text based adventures. At the time of it's release, it was groundbreaking in giving players a true visual sense of the items and people they are interacting…

It doesn't visually depict all of the actions, but instead uses its creative writing to allow you to visualize the events yourself, creating a much more powerful image than what any animation or cutscene could accurately portray. The porting could have done with some polishing, though, as the recreated interface looks very amateurish with its generic font, blank right…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#255 out of 612)... it's time for Deja Vu: MacVenture Series. If ever there was an argument for the necessity of remasters, Deja Vu is it. I won't call the game unplayable--it's not, literally speaking, impossible to play: it's just very, very, very difficult to get into. Presumably it would be a bit easier to manage if I were more familiar and/or nostalgic for the first generation or so of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A faithful port of the original, i.e. you're going to mess up without knowing when or how and have to start the whole game over again. Hopefully, you don't miss something important. Also, don't get shoot by the empty gun in the alley.

Personally, I grew up playing this on the NES, so the controls are a little different, but it is the very same game. There isn't a lot I can say other than, I prefer the NES version, because I grew up with it. Deja Vu, would have been better released as a complete remake, with updated graphics, story and more, but for the Nostalgia geek out there, you will find a classic. Unfortunately, I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Déjà Vu: MacVenture Series is an ancient game from 1985. It's a whopping 39 years old at the time of this review. It predates the internet, it's older than most gamers on Steam. And it's abandonware. It was designed for the original Apple Macintosh (yes that one). Remember "Don't let 1984 be like 1984"? How's that going now? Apple has the biggest walled garden in the world, with the strictest rules. Anyway. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen…

I remember enjoying Deja Vu as a kid on my 8-bit Nintendo, so I was curious how the Mac version compared. Unfortunately, I didn't have much fun with the Mac version, and it certainly didn't seem like a game that has aged well. It didn't even have any music.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Early point/click adventure(the first?) with some adult themes Well the game is set in 1941 Chicago and it has the feel of an old, gangster/detective film. It's a very early point and click adventure, but is different from others in it's allowing you to drag, drop, resize, open and close. It has a very dark, serious, adult feel to it, you're in a dirty city full of crooked, untrustworthy characters, Ace Harding himself appearing to have a skeleton or two in his closet. The graphics are nice,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In Sum: A frustrating adventure game with a good storyline and no replay value, but is overall satisfying. 4/5. An old classic game that has caused a lot of headaches. Deja Vu is the story of Ace Harding, a private detective with amnesia, in a film noir setting. It is a kind of point-and-click adventure, I believe predating games like Maniac Mansion by a few years, and it requires quite a bit of thinking to play. Graphically, it is well-done for the time. There are very few animations,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looking back to games that I used to watch as part of my usual 'Let's Play binge' sessions from way back in the late 2000's and early 2010's goes, the MacVenture games always fascinated my mind to no end as I loved how it presented each of their worlds in a rather impressively detailed (at the time) manner that allowed players to inspect, interact with and roam the game's universe in ways previously unexplored by mostly arcade-like titles at the time. Given how the video game industry has…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game faithfully captures the look and sound of the classic Deja Vu: A Nightmare comes true for both the classic Mac and the Apple IIgs. I would have preferred the Windows 3.1 version, but this will do until they decide to somehow include the Windows 3.1 version into this software or as a separate package. Definitely a solid if short game for lateral thinkers.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i grew up on the NES versions so for me this sucks. no music. menus make less sense. hard pass.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hard to play. Hard to figure out basic controls. Frusterated. Liked this one a heck of a lot better on the NES and will continue playing it on that console.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've come to realize I have never been a fan of point-and-click games where one wrong move kills you. I found this tedious. If there is a nostalgia factor for you, it might be worth it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Shadowgate? Like the video game Shadowgate? Like Déjà Vu, Uninvited, and Shadowgate trio?
unlabelledView post →In a way, it’s shame that this hasn’t been remade like Shadowgate. On the other hand, I don’t know if a remake would make Deja Vu good. This doesn’t hold up at all and I’d only recommend it as an antique experience for those interested in old adventure games.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My favorite death in this game is a tossup between the sewer alligator or the hooker that shoots you and leaves you on the ground where you literally cringe to death knowing you are going to be found without a fresh change of socks and underwear.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've loved this game since I first saw it in Nintendo Power. Very difficult but I love the noir tropes all over this game. REMAKE PLEASE. I'M SERIOUS.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are old enough to have played Déjà Vu in 1985 and your original floppies had long since rotted away somewhere in your basement, you will find this an absolute treat. For anyone else, the interface and inventory handling may prove too clunky to enjoy this 2 hour mystery-crime adventure.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought the game was very average but giving that I don't have any big complains I'm giving it a pass. The feeling was in the right place and it felt like a classic pc thing that was fine. I found that the original mac version ran better than the colour version as I had no bugs in the original but game crashing one's in colour. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Déjà Vu is a fascinating relic from the very early days of point-and-click adventures. You wake up in a bar restroom with no memory and must piece together who you are and what happened — all while navigating a desktop-style interface built from several separate windows that can be moved and resized. The pacing is harsh by modern standards: instant deaths, trial-and-error and frequent reloads are part of the experience. Yet the game’s structure is logical, its atmosphere is excellent and the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →https://youtu.be/5rfKRrIwwa4Remembered as a foundational Noir style adventure game there is greatness to the style and setting. Functionally the game suffers from decades since release making it at best a nostalgia piece.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Déjà Vu is a remarkably innovative game, especially since it was first released in 1985 for the Mac (BEFORE being ported to other systems). POSITIVES Unlike the typical (Infocom-style) text-adventure games of the 80s, this game uses an exclusively graphical interface with action verbs as buttons and a point-and-click method of selecting the object upon which the action is applied. This feature alone is, in a way, more advanced that most of the Myst-style games of the 1990s (that typically…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very limited and simple quasi-real life simulator that has troll gameplay which makes you die unpredictably just because the game wanted you to die because of a particular choice you made, so, while playing this game, make your peace with death and prepare to die, LOL. At least the game has a great sense of witty, sarcastic and dark humour and a sense of showing the rope about life 101 to help players free from their own naivety and ignorance. It's very admirable that, as an adventure game,…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got all the trapping of old games: limited amount of turn to finish the game, dead ends where you will get stuck if you saved after some points, no tutorial, no sfx or music, but the game surprisingly playable, and even fun, especially compared to lots of old games I tried. I'm honestly surprised at how (relatively) intuitive is the drag-and-drop-and-click interface is, though obviously there are hiccups. This is a true pioneer of graphical adventure games. It's cheap enough, but it's worth it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this game as a 12 year old or something on my uncles mac, never got far but I loved it anyway, seeing it appear on the steam store filled me with nostalgia, I bought it, and am reliving my youth hopefully ill get further playing it now! Graphics are what you would expect, but the story is fun noir and the point and click narative is one of the first, take a look and see a piece of gaming history!

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do you like point and click adventures? Do you like detective stories? Do you like old games? If you said yes to those, then absolutely get this. It's a great little story about amnesia. The inventory is a pain in the ass, though.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A true classic remains fun to play even 30 years after its initial release. https://youtu.be/clcJFZEnEBk While you can feel this game's age in its graphics and sound design as well as a bit of a clunky feel when it comes to the interface, overall this game has aged pretty well. The game is very open-ended and let's you explore most of its locations in any order you want. You can pick up all kinds of objects and put them in your inventory and sort them however you see fit, and use, combine…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, I find this title irritating. I haven't played the original version to know how accurate the emulation is, but it's a bit fiddly managing the various windows (inventory/contents of a specific item) on top of remembering things like "OPEN" a person to search their body(???). Furthermore, the game starts with an unspoken time limit where you just lose if you take too long, and there are screens where you just lose if you don't know what to do, or - in one instance - if you just walk…

It is very cool but also the slowest to process and display. #djvu
