unlabelledView post →1981. We haven't yet moved to Edinburgh, but we're visiting family there. Obviously we take advantage of the chance to go to the cinema and end up going to watch this new film just out, Clash of the Titans. It's magical. I'm 10 years old, and I've never seen anything like it. Still haven't. <more>

unlabelledView post →This *is not* the artists’ fault, it’s entirely a studio issue and choice. You can make phenomenal effects if you want to spend the time, the time, oh, also the time, and the money on it. And they don’t. I would rather watch a Harryhausen movie like the 80s CLASH OF THE TITANS.

Because there are many movies from this year alone I would argue are better than that film. 😂

There is huge range in quality for stereo conversion depending on how much the director cares and the studio is willing to spend. Fun fact, Clash of the Titans (2010) was such a shitty, low budget conversion that "release the kraken" was an industry term for, "this is a shit, rushed, cheap job." There's a lot of variables unique to stereo filming and most directors don't understand…

unlabelledView post →The 80s had a lot of fantasy and occult themes going on. There was the “Satanic Panic” that the religious right brewed up as a means of social control. Dungeons and Dragons was vilified (see _Mazes and Monsters_ starring Tom Hanks). Heavy Metal—which leaned into mythical themes—was also targeted. And what the right tries to push down naturally gains interest in a rebellious way. Fantasy movies had a bit of a heyday. _Conan the Barbarian_, _Clash of the Titans_, _Never Ending Story_, _Princess…
