Chinatown

CrimeMysteryThriller

Private eye Jake Gittes lives off of the murky moral climate of sunbaked, pre-World War II Southern California. This is how you accept a Best Actor gong (for “Chinatown”) — with a skit via satellite on the set of your next Movie (“One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”) which will win you the Best Actor Oscar the following year. DAVID NIVEN & JACK NICHOLSON in 1975.

Finished watching CHINATOWN (1974). This is, in fact, as good as the hype proclaimed, particularly the BLEAK, soul crushing, ending. The film looks just incredible on 4K, and Jack Nicholson proves why he became one of the all time greats very early in his career.

I saw this film dork tweet something like "THE SUBSTANCE is passable but only if you view it as a comedy about vanity" and like, yeah bro, CHINATOWN is a mystery about plumbing, do you think Coralie Fargeat just tripped on a banana peel and accidentally made a movie

LA Confidential isn’t the greatest movie ever or even my favorite. But it’s hard to find a better 35m stretch than the end of that movie. Brilliant screenplay, amazing sets, great acting. Like its forerunner Chinatown (which I love even more) I discover something new every time I watch it.

Found KINO LORBER's 4K of THE USUAL SUSPECTS (1995) today. I've seen bits of this film, but never watched it all the way through, though I am well aware of it's reputation. Unfortunately, much like CHINATOWN it's another film tainted by heinous revelations about the people that made it. -__-

IMHO, the must underrated US film of the 1970s is Klute. Never discussed as top tier with the Godfathers, Taxi Driver, Chinatown etc. When discussed, it's all about Fonda. But Klute has maybe the best camera work/design of the decade, tons of improv, and politics way ahead of its time. Klute, dude.

Finished this today. From the author of The Big Goodbye - a brilliantly written book about the making of Chinatown - this is a deep dive into Coppola’s dream of creating a new kind of film studio, a utopian artists collective called Zoetrope. Very inspiring but will make you feel lazy by comparison.

I'm fascinated by what Don Bluth's The Little Blue Whale could've turned out had he made it. The film would've been written by Robert Towne who also wrote Chinatown and Shampoo and all we have are the concept art keys of what the film could've looked like. It looked nice.
