Every death felt deserved, and every win felt earned. The game’s core hook is exploration. Procedurally generated rooms keep each run feeling fresh, loot drops can completely change your approach, and rescuing NPCs add shops and side content to the hub town. Boss fights are a standout: tough, smartly designed, and…

unlabelledView post →The game is honestly fine. I really like this type of combat and I dont mind the procedurally generated levels, but I cant recommend this game due to 1 reason, backtracking. The only weakness of procedural generation is how forgettable the levels are, and that's fine, but this game for some reason forces the player to go back and find 1 random room in a location that I dont care about. What makes backtracking in this game especially annoying is how the defence scales, because you're literally…

It follows a quirky alien and her daughter as they invade a living spaceship. Featuring maggots to eat, plushies to collect, and walls of rotten flesh.

unlabelledView post →I thought I would never find a 2D Metroidvania I didn't like. But then I played Chasm. In the most basic level, a Metroidvania has to do two things well: combat and exploration. Chasm draws a lot from the SNES Castlevania titles for combat and movement, with long wind-up times, stance locks during attacks, stun locks during jumps, and different attack reach and arcs based on the weapon. Also the "magic" system is copy paste from Castlevania, particularly Castlevania X and Super Castlevania IV.…

unlabelledView post →A classic metroidvania done right. Instead of reinventing the genre, it focuses on doing the fundamentals exceptionally well. That strength is also what holds it back, since its safe execution can make the whole adventure feel a little muted.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When this game got announced years ago the market was flush with metroidvanias and I was incredibly excited. I can only imagine I was put off at the time by "procedurally generated" and felt like that would lend an unenjoyable experience for the genre. I finally picked it up and tried it out and couldn't get enough! Enough so that I played through 3 times in order to 100% the achievements and never felt tired of it. There's a bit of nuance to control timing for attacks that feels really…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game would've been much better as a fully hand-crafted Metroidvania or a fully run-based roguelite. Right now, it falls somewhere in between and, as a result, lacks the best qualities of either genre. The game isn't terrible, per se, but it plays mostly as a poor imitation of a Castlevania game with an awfully boring map. The best use case for Chasm is as a palette cleanser—a light way to end a gaming session, or something to do for 15-20 minutes before you start up whatever game you…

unlabelledView post →I WOULD recommend Chasm, but with one very harsh condition: Do NOT play it if you have ever played a Metroidvania before. Especially Castlevania: Symphony of the Night or any of the other Castlevanias after it which drew from it's formula. Unfortunately, Chasm draws many inspirations from these games, but it does so in only the most boring ways possible. Chasm feels like the bare-bones skeleton of a much more interesting Metroidvania. It has the basics down, but does nothing to embellish on…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is like those white labeled products in Repo Man, if there was a container that was just labeled "Metroidvania." Every aspect of it feels bland at best, packed with samey rooms full of spongy enemies that just give you plenty of time to soak in how underwhelming the experience is. The procedural generation, its main conceit, is pretty pointless when it isn't fun enough to want to even finish the game the first time. A Robot Named Fight captured the idea of an endlessly replayable MV…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh, you just beat a boss? Congrats. Hope you didn’t enjoy that too much because the game doesn’t save. Die once and you’re right back to doing it again. Chasm seems determined to confuse frustration with difficulty. Enemies outrange you, your weapon feels like a toothpick, and the game throws in spikes and janky platforming just to make sure you’re never actually having fun. Instead of rewarding progress, it wastes your time. By the time you’ve replayed the same areas for the third time,…

If you’re a fan of Symphony of the Night and metroidvania-style games, this one is definitely worth your time. The pixel art is gorgeous and really nails that classic vibe without feeling dated. Movement and combat feel tight and responsive, which is huge for a game like this. Exploring the procedurally generated world kept things fresh on multiple runs, and I liked how the layout changes while still feeling…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chasm is a charming Metroidvania with great pixel art, responsive controls, and a solid sense of exploration. The procedural level generation adds replayability, and while it doesn’t break new ground for the genre, it delivers a consistently enjoyable adventure that’s both nostalgic and satisfying. Definitely worth checking out for fans of classic side-scrollers.

Nice pixel-art graphics, quite good (but not perfect) controls, good sense of exploration (but with some backtracking), challenging difficulty. Levels are procedurally generated, which may seem interesting, but translates into a lack of cohesion and an uninspiring level design. A honest game. unlabelledView post →Chasm starts off on the wrong foot and, unfortunately, never quite recovers. The game has one of the most tedious intros I’ve experienced in recent memory. You’re greeted with boring, uninspired dialogue that serves as a flimsy excuse to send you across the starting castle to speak to the captain. Once you’ve done that, you’re sent to the other side of the castle to pick up a weapon, only to trudge back to the middle and endure an unskippable cutscene of the main character traveling to the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chasm is a very fun dungeon crawler with excellent gameplay, a solid story, good music, and enjoyable visuals (there are alternate visual styles available in the settings! I've tried both Pixel and Smooth, and enjoyed both.) I quite like how many different weapons there are to collect in the game, and I love backtracking so I enjoyed going back to previous areas whenever I got a new ability. The characters are fun and while this is weirdly specific, I love games where you can rescue (or…

unlabelledView post →This is a pretty fun MetroidVania with the twist of randomized levels thru a seed system. While this adds a challenge and makes getting stuck harder, as every seed is different and thus, a proper walkthrough is not straightforward, it also adds a wee bit of complication if you do get stuck and have the worry that maybe your seed is unbeatable. While I questioned this a few times, I ultimately got through the game. Just when I thought I was stuck, a needed item or ability would be right around a…

unlabelledView post →Fun and easy metroidvania game. Fast to finish to. I would only recomend this game to fans of the genre. A 7/10 for fans, a 5/10 for people who usually don't play metroidvanias.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As metroidvanias go, this is a metroidvania. It looks quite pretty but by all other measures, it fails with uninspired combat, weapons and such. I think the running joke of not knowing where to go next comes to rear its ugly head once more. After 12 hours, you'd think I'd know where I needed to go next. I did not.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty dull. Very basic controls. Not much of a story to care about. 60 FPS cap. Level layout is exactly what you'd expect to find in a procedural generated thing. What was even the point of that? Nothing specifically terrible, but nothing of note either.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The combat and platforming is ok, but does not hold up for backtracking, which is a major issue. Also, there should have been a default seed for first times so maybe there'd be a decent guide for all the goofy puzzles counting stars on a painting.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chasm is a side-scrolling action-adventure that sets out to honor the foundations of the Metroidvania genre while experimenting with procedural world generation, and the result is a game that feels both reverent and cautiously experimental. Developed and published by Bit Kid, Inc., it places the player in the role of a young recruit sent to investigate a once-thriving mining town that has fallen silent. This simple premise serves as a gateway into a vast subterranean labyrinth, where ruined…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game crashes CONSTANTLY! It's a really fun game so far. except the constant crashing. Like right after a boss fight, when you haven't had a chance to save. Super annoying and frustrating.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looks great and plays mostly great (the glide mechanic is wonky), but it's far too short and the setting/characters feel like stock assets downloaded from Free Assets Dot Com. If you need a metroidvania fix it will fit the bill, but not for very long and it won't leave much of an impression.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I actually have more play time on this one than indicated since I played it the most on the Switch. Picked this one up on sale since I prefer to play things on PC/Steamdeck hoping it would improve with updates but it really hasn't. Ultimately, there isn't too much "wrong" with the game. It functions. It is a metroidvania. It does what it says on the tin, so to speak. You could do worse. But there is also nothing about this game to make it stand out. Initially I was really intrigued by the idea…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What an awesome game! The learning curve at the beginning was a little discouraging, but once I clicked with the upgrades and customizing armor, weapons and magic--it was an addictive and thoroughly enjoyable game. Metroidvania maps are very important to me, and this game's mapping layout was so helpful and clear! Bit Kid's pixel art is gorgeous too, with deep color tones for the biome backgrounds that somehow make the foreground sprites really pop. Highly recommended!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is ok, but it feels flat. There is nothing that basically give me any "motivation" to keep playing it.

unlabelledView post →The people who say the controls/movement in this game is wonky are crazy. Its literally on par or better than Symphony of the Night and the other Castlevania games of this type. Extremely smooth and responsive. People who complain about the difficulty are just babies or have started out with hard mode. Wow, a hard mode that actually challenges the player? How unheard of. Normal mode is imo easier than some of the Castlevania titles. Hard mode is tough, punishing but rewarding at the same…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chasm random generation is an interesting concept, but lack of substantial rewards and interesting layouts kills it for me. Funny part is : it all could've been a bad seeds for me. But well If there's a random chance game will be good... that's not good. While the gameplay is fine, the exploration leaves a lot to be desired. My main complaint is aforementioned random generation, while good on paper, it requires careful planning and ways to make it interesting. The main drawback for me was…
