What people are saying

A deeply divisive pirate RPG; praised for depth but criticized for jank and bugs.

Many players praise Caribbean Legend for its immense depth, freedom, and addictive gameplay, calling it the best pirate RPG despite its flaws. One fan describes it as "Morrowind + Mount & Blade with a hint of Sid Meier's pirates" (R6), while another notes it will provide HOURS... of gameplay (R4). [6][4][15][21]

However, critics point to outdated graphics, frustrating bugs, and a steep learning curve as major drawbacks. One player warns the game is "outdated, ugly, unfriendly, hardcore" (R1), and another calls it "an incredibly frustrating game" with "confusing and inscrutable quest descriptions" (R30). Technical issues like crashes on collision (R8) and broken quests (R32) are also cited. [1][30][8][32]

Praised depth and freedom · addictive gameplay · active developer support
Criticised outdated graphics · bugs and jank · steep learning curve

I've been following this game for years, since around their 1.3 patch. I'm going to preface this review by saying that this is the most in depth, most detailed pirate RPG on the market. I've played over 100 hours of this game, and have thoroughly enjoyed my time playing. So why am I posting a negative review? I've gotten back into this game after a hot minute of not playing it, and the most recent updates they've done have made the early game just about unplayable. To further explain- One of…

The game starts out fine, but once your done with the beginning, everything kills you. Take a quest to escort somebody- Killed by ships at the destination Fight a duel for honor- Killed by getting shot in the face Travel around the map- Killed in an inescapable pirate ship fight. Try to do a side quest- Killed in an unwinnable fight with 10 enemys I know the game is supposed to be hard, but I spent two hours trying to find anything that didn't kill me, and there was none. I'm sure that…

I bought the base game to see if I would like it. Now I want to buy the Complete bundle to complete the collection, but I can't because I own the base game... other bundles on Steam let you buy the bundle to get the discount on the unowned items. This is the issue with setting it as a collection/game-version instead of a bundle. Even Paradox games allow you to buy bundles of Game+DLC when you own the base game. Make it a bundle I can buy and you'll get my money for the rest of the items in the…

Going to change my review to a Yes, but with caution. - Caribbean Legends is essentially the original Sea Dogs to each his own, but brought up to speed to more modern gameplay standards to some degree. - Most of the bugs that were in the old game are still mostly here, but many have been fixed. So far I've not experienced a lot of the bugs despite being careless in my 1st and now 2nd playthrough. - Be prepared to grind, grind grind. In fact, you will probably grind only trade missions for…

An incredibly frustrating game. Just to name a few problems: confusing and inscrutable quest descriptions; quests are frequently broken or bugged; poor translation (english); bewildering balance; the sailing feels too simplistic; firing cannons feels terrible; ships feel sluggish; graphics are ugly; every town feels identical... Let me give you an example. A random questgiver came up to me and said, "escort me to the cave!" I said sure. That's what you do! Take quests! The game then…

This review comes from a very niche type of user. This game is the latest iteration of an actually very long series of games from a nearly-unknown Eastern-European developer, stretching back for nearly 30 years. Most Americans and even some Western Europeans would call these games a prime example of "Eurojank". And for much of the history, that's not exactly unearned. These games have...character. Like an old Volga ar. You need to get to know it, take good care of it, love it. If you…

I will begin with the positives as it is important to start with that: This game will provide HOURS and I do mean HOURS of gameplay, allowing you to while the hours down in a fun but challenging setting. There is a Sandbox Mode which allows for infinite replayability and exploring, just like Sid Meier's Pirates and Sea Dogs (Of which this game was inspired), and a story mode which is also fairly well made. The game has many mechanics that may seem complicated on the surface, but are actually…

I want to like this a lot more than I do. This is a pirate game in aesthetic and title only. You dont sail a ship so much as look down at it from the sky and control the little toy model of it. The on deck camera revealed that my crew is filled with dudes walking around in circles bumping into each other. I can't act like a pirate out of the designated "act like a pirate here" zones. really set in when I had to save a spanish prisoner. Tried the lie approach, not even a skill check just a…

Graphics are way outdated, story is actually very good, gameplay is excellent even if it is a bit janky - souls like fighting mean you do need to scum save a bit but F6 isn't far away, progression is fantastic, and it's so easy to sink hours into. I read the negative reviews for this, and honestly, there are only two types, players who have hundreds of hours complaining about saves (honestly if you have 700 hours in a game for $30 I think you got your money worth dude), and those that haven't…

It's Morrowind + Mount & Blade with a hint of Sid Meier's pirates. All games which I absolutely adore. Not many RPGs these days make you actually immerse yourself in the world. Here you get to feel what it's like to be dropped into an open world and wonder what its mechanics are, what things you can do besides the most obvious ones. You can play it in your own style, and the story mode is also very interesting.

The review was a lot longer, but at this point I can keep it very short. The sandbox portion of the game is where most if the fun is had, the game is very open and you get to choose what you want to do and how you want to do it. The progression is rewarding and the gameplay is fun, though the quest design can be very vague, and the explanation on how to do certain quests non-existand which is a big problem when you're new and don't know what to do if it isn't straightforward. However, most of…

I think this is a prime example of having too much ambition. The ideas are there, but the execution falls short - and it falls hard. First off, this is basically a remake/update of an older game called Sea Dogs: I-forgot-the-sub-title. However, the core of the old game is still there, and oh boy, does it make a mess of things. This whole game is basically a ton of stuff, which by itself sounds good, taped onto an old game which by itself was plenty buggy back in the day. The result is bad.…

Far more playable than any other version of this game I've bought over the years. This is a pirate-rpg simulation kind of similar to Sid Meier's Pirates! but far more detailed and "hardcore". This is not an arcade game. This is not a pick up and jump into it and start sailing the seas pirating in ten minutes game. But it is fun if you can handle some jank, are capable of critical thinking and enjoy a long grind. Haven't had any crashing problems but there are...oddities that crop up during…

Unplayable garbage. It really is. Combat is off the scales ridiculous, making dark souls look cute - the ship cannoneering is just miserable. The 'solution' is to manually aim the cannons, yes - THAT is the solution to not just using auto-fire because your 'captain' doesn't yet know cannoneering. So somehow manually aiming fixing that issue? It's just bad game design. Don't buy. My god this was bad. and disappointing. p.s. just noticed this game is almost 60GB game. Wow. The game seems to have a lot of potential but the control scheme is absolutely awful, it basically uses every key on the keyboard. The "playable" rating for Steam Deck is wildly inaccurate, I didn't even make it through the prologue without having to re-bind buttons multiple times. There simply aren't enough buttons on the deck to have everything mapped, even using input menus and such. I have been playing Sea Dogs, Pirates of the Caribbean, Age of Pirates/Sails from probably the same devs who made all those games, for quite a long time. This game has come a long way IMHO. I really liked the game until i didn't. If you play eploration mode you should act as if it is story mode with all timers active. Or you will find yourself stuck like me after 40 hours of playing and then not being able to finish a quest that blocks you from even continuing the main quest. I'll probably be made fun of for being filtered out by the tutorial, but I don't care. Melee weapon combat is very clunky and feels unresponsive. (edit: as in, there are no pain flinching animations upon getting hit, or hitting the opponent when taking / delivering quick attacks, and some blocks not working at all, despite you hitting the key and seeing your character go into a defensive stance.) Feinting attacks (which make your opponent fumble their attack and trip) requires microsecond…

Frustrating early game – vague quests and punishing systems I’ve been playing Caribbean Legend and I really want to like it, but the early game is driving me crazy. A lot of systems feel unclear or just poorly explained, and the quests often leave you guessing. Main issues I’ve run into: Quests are way too vague. I hope they'll keep working on this game, but I'm giving a negative review because they focus on wrong things and with some of their changes make the game even more frustrating than it is. Stop polishing the turd with graphical upgrades and fix it first, improve the gameplay (by making it less janky and frustrating, not more...). Before buying I would advise you to find and try "Corsairs Ship Pack" - which you may like better than this game, and it's free.

This game has clearly earned a place among the best video games I’ve ever played. The sense of freedom is immense, offering countless hours of gameplay. It reminds me of Morrowind, where you explore an open world and discover quests on your own by talking to NPCs rather than being constantly guided. The naval combat system is highly addictive, and while progression is intentionally slow, it feels rewarding as you steadily grow stronger and gain levels. I highly recommend it.

I'm a big believer that if the core combat in a game isn't good, the game isn't good, and that is the case here. There are 3 kinds of attack: fast, slash, heavy. To counter these you can block, parry, or step back. Attacking takes stamina but defending does not. The attack animations (except heavy) are too fast for a human to consistently react to them and pick the correct counter. The average human reaction time is .25 seconds, but the fast attack is something around .3 seconds. If I really…

This game is addictive! Almost every aspect is unpolished, the graphics are ancient, and the gameplay system has changed four times—but it's still the best pirate game out there. I've been playing this series for 20 years, and although I've tried nearly every other serious title with this theme, nothing comes close. Credit to the developers—they've worked hard over the past two years, balanced the difficulty, and made it accessible to everyone.

One of the best remakes of old games for us "old" gamer folks of age 30+ Active deveolpers that add new content, fix bugs, and share their love for ships with us. Part of it's charme is that it does not have the comfort of modern games which can be played by an AI. This game has no quest markers that tell you where to go, you have to read alot, to grind a bit and to use your brain. That may prove difficult for the newer generations of "gamers".

Aye, cruisin' me ship across the vast seas, a-plunderin' rival vessels and claimin' their juicy loot as me own! Arrr, if only I had a scurvy dog like meself to sail back to those times. Now, instead o' the open water and the glint o' gold, I be stuck watchin' strange drawings on me glowing rectangle all day. Blimey, a pirate's life for me, not this digital bilge!

A Diamond in the rough Summary I am a big fan of the age of sail type games, having played "Pirates of the Burning Sea", "Naval Action", "World of Sea Battle" and (regrettably) "Skull & Bones". For me, this game ticks a lot of the boxes, especially since the introduce of the version 1.8 on open beta, which lead me to leave this review. A bit clunky on release, Ill admit. But the devs have done an excellent job bringing an old classic back to life! Hundreds of hours of free exploration, sea and land battles of many scenarios, and an excellent story await you in this journey. With every update, arrive more new mechanics, QOL improvements, and unique items and ships. Going on the second year after release, Blackmark studio keeps impressing. This game has quite the learning curve to it. However, once you get into the world of…

It almost made me cry - to see such a good threatment to a cult classic game.

This is OLD SCHOOL, if you like the theme and hardcore RPGs, you'll love this. Sadly, even after a ton of quality of life improvements, there's still some jank to contend with, nothing too bad, though, game is still pretty amazing. Just make sure to read everything carefully, you'll be glad you did.

Garbage. So many things are annoying when trying to play this game. From sailing to walking around the mechanics are poor and unpolished. This should be an early access game
