UK went from Brief Encounter and Black Narcissus, which were works of art and internationally successful, to what we are now, a talent pool to prop up US cultural hegemony. Good luck with this route America.

Here she is in the great, under-seen festive film, THE HOLLY AND THE IVY (George More O'Ferrall, UK, 1952). It features another of her wonderfully nuanced performances.

unlabelledView post →The Passionate Friends feels like David Lean's own riposte to Brief Encounter. It doesn't have its elegant structure but instead settles on being a more brittle proposition. It is a tougher film, one where the characters are afforded less dignity, and voices are actually raised.
