unlabelledView post →Possibly the most widely known movie like this was about Brandon Teena, a trans man, called Boys Don't Cry. And the filmmaker very much altered the facts for the film to minimize Brandon's transness. it was more about cis people's feelings about the murders than it was about Brandon himself.
unlabelledView post →Boys Don't Cry isn't a bad movie, I understand that it's important to trans film history (though I don't think any trans people were involved in making it) but it is so often the first story about a trans man that newly out/closeted trans men see Which is actually not great
unlabelledView post →"Corrective rape" is literally trying to rape someone straight, or to punish them by raping. The movie "Boys Don't Cry" was about Brandon Teena, a trans man who was a victim of "corrective rape,' before he was murdered.
unlabelledView post →I can still see his every feature. He was so cool for the three seconds the camera panned to him. Then the movie came out. I was working at a grocery store that has a small VHS rental section. I watched every movie that came in. It was 2000. I rented Boys Don't Cry. I rented it EIGHT TIMES.

unlabelledView post →The first trans man I ever heard of was Brandon Teena, the murder victim from that Boys Don't Cry movie. Then basically no others until Chaz Bono.
unlabelledView post →I LOVE this movie. I have a massive soft spot for it bc early transition I got exposed to Boys Don't Cry, which fucked me up, but by comparison, this was such a sweet trans story, and I think it added a hopefulness to being trans that early 20s me needed to see.
unlabelledView post →This reminds me of the film Boys Don't Cry which I got sick to my stomach while watching. I don't ever wanna see that movie again & I don't wanna hear that this wasn't a hate crime. Only hate would cause some1 to torture, sexually assault & dismember a human being. We lift your name, Sam Nordquist .

unlabelledView post →The Cure's Boys Don't Cry is used in new He-Man film. "Even Adam outside his He-Man persona has an '80s theme. Reflecting his softer side, The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry" plays over a montage of him failing to fit in on Earth."

unlabelledView post →THIS!! Most LGBTQ+ & Black people Already Knew this. For those cis-het white people who don't believe it, I have a couple assignments for you. Go watch the movie Boys Don't Cry. Yes, yes, it was made 25yrs ago. Still relevant! TW: omfg violence/rape/slurs..
unlabelledView post →Trivial Oscar fact I just remembered: If Demi Moore wins Best Actress, she'll be the 10th performer to win an acting Oscar for a female-directed film after: Marlee Matlin (CHILDREN..LESSER GOD) Holly Hunter/Anna Paquin (THE PIANO) Hilary Swank (BOYS DON'T CRY) (cont.)..
unlabelledView post →It didn't. It sucks that precautions have to be taken, but I come from the Boys Don't Cry (movie) era, and I always advise young people and people who are still dating to be cautious. I don't think it's victim shaming to say "it's dangerous out there, be careful"!
unlabelledView post →Yup. When I started figuring myself out at age 26 in 2009, I'd never HEARD of trans men before, & the only movie with one was Boys Don't Cry, in which a cis woman plays a real-life trans man who was gang-raped and murdered when outed. Plus HRT & GAS weren't covered by insurance bc there was no ACA.
unlabelledView post →A whole lot of people missed the film Boys Don't Cry (or the case it was based on) and it shows. (NOTE: cIf you already understand that *all* trans people are vulnerable to violence you do NOT need to go through watching it, but if you deny it I wanna Ludovico your ass in front of it)
unlabelledView post →the movie Boys Don't Cry. I know it's strongly disliked now but at the time it really opened my mind and made me think about a lot of things. I was in high school, took myself to see it after reading about it in Entertainment Weekly.

unlabelledView post →Why are some people saying "There were no trans people before 10 years ago?" Are they completely culturally illiterate? Did they misunderstand "Killer Queen" by Queen as being about Elizabeth II? Have they never heard of the movie "Boys Don't Cry"? Did they miss every day of history class?
unlabelledView post →I remember. I also remember the movie Boys Don't Cry. Powerful.
unlabelledView post →"Boys Don't Cry" was my first ever exposure to any trans guy character at all, in a college film class, but he was discussed as simply "a lesbian in disguise" so I didn't see myself in him. Not having any mirror for who I was was a pretty serious obstruction; I was suicidal until my 40s.

unlabelledView post →Even More Films Big Boys Don't Cry (2020). Directed by Steve Crowhurst This is a grim tale starring Michael Socha, surely one of the UK's best actors. He plays Paul Connolly, on whose book the film is based. We flash back to his time at a children's home where he and others were abused. Grim.

I went into that room not knowing what transgender meant. I left with a better understanding than SO MANY PEOPLE it's WILD.
unlabelledView post →Boys Don't Cry. Great movie, but it's terrible because sad and angry. I really can't watch it again.
unlabelledView post →I rewatch a lot of movies, but some of the most influential on me I have never and probably will never see more than once. Like Possum, absolute masterful horror around CSA. Don't know that I could bear a second watching. Boys Don't Cry. Come And See, the greatest war film ever made.
unlabelledView post →Kimberly Peirce, among others, talked about stuff like that in "This Film Is Not Yet Ratedl regarding "Boys Don't Cry." They got an NC-17 rating because Chloe Sevigny wiped her lips after performing oral sex on Hillary Swank. But soon after Swank being beaten to death was not a problem.

unlabelledView post →9/ With help from the Sundance Institute's Filmmakers, Writers and Producers Labs in 1997, Peirce completed the feature film in 1999. Upon its release, Boys Don't Cry became one of the most acclaimed and talked about films of the year.
unlabelledView post →The very dark and controversial movie Boys Don't Cry is sort of what brought this problem into cis public consciousness. While Kimberley Pierce earnestly based the film on the true story of trans man Brandon Teena, the movie drew a lot of controversy by casting Hilary Swank as the lead. (mtc...)
unlabelledView post →Again, Disclosure says all this but hence you often have cis men portraying trans women on screen, perpetuating bullshit thus. You have a comparative ignoring, generally, of trans men. Save for...that's right, Boys Don't Cry—a movie about a trans man killed for existing, based on real life. Cool.
unlabelledView post →Right, but I think giving her a second Oscar without having a critical acclaimed performance in a film after Boys Don't Cry was a choice... But it's true, it's mostly a “one and done” for the majority of the nominees and winners.
unlabelledView post →Trans women are demonized, trans men are invisibilized. The first time most people in the general public ever heard of the idea of a trans man was witb "Boys Don't Cry" in the 90s and that fucking movie thinks Brandon Teena was a cis lesbian.
unlabelledView post →That joke did strike many as harsh, since one of the people to whom Norm Macdonald was referring was Brandon Teena, the trans man who was raped by John Lotter and Tom Nisse and who was the subject of the movie "Boys Don't Cry." Macdonald never apologized for this.
unlabelledView post →As much as Norm's delivery of that line was amazing back in the day, the context of that image is awful: He's making fun of Brandon Teena, the trans man whose rape and murder was the basis for the movie "Boys Don't Cry".
unlabelledView post →I saw the title of your upcoming book BOYS DON'T FRY yesterday, and the first place my brain went was to the film BOYS DON'T CRY... which is very much *not* kidlit-territory... and then I realized that no one under 40 would have been old enough to see that film when it was in theaters (1999)!
