60 of 210 · most liked firstWent to a screening of Ben-Hur (1959) today. The movie opens with a 5-minute overture that's just music with a black screen. As I was thinking about how you could never do that today, the projection stopped. After a while, they started the movie from the beginning and then stopped it again...
unlabelledView post →Ya know what? I'm gonna do it. 1926 Oscars. I am less nice than I was before and if someone demands a movie with a Confederate hero win, that's what the block button is for. I am doing films of 1926 because you KNOW that BEN-HUR would sweep 1925. Let's gooooo!
unlabelledView post →Now I need to know what movies people were shown in school on movie days or when the teacher didn't feel like it. • The Ten Commandments (many times) • Ben-Hur (at least twice) • The Breakfast Club (my high school loved this one) • Remember the Titans • Monty Python & The Holy Grail (idk, man)
unlabelledView post →That's longer than Ben-Hur or Lawrence of Arabia and those movies have intermissions. You need to EARN the right to make a movie that long and Marvel has not earned that.
unlabelledView post →I'm happy to share that l have a humble contribution in this incredible show "Film School" happening in LA tomorrow at Giant Robot! The idea was artists doing fun studies of films. I chose 1925's classic Ben-Hur! It was fun trying to capture some of the earliest color in films in a paper with oils
unlabelledView post →Two Italian extras playing Romans in BEN-HUR (1925), that’s who! They went missing, the American film crew panicked and burned their clothes to cover up their deaths but they had actually washed ashore and took forever to return because everyone on the way wanted to drink with centurions
unlabelledView post →Speaking of Ben Hur: I'm sure that many of us had a movie-tie-in version of a novel that had a spread of stills from the movie; one treat I found at a flea market was this 1901 "Player's Edition" Ben Hur with stills from THE PLAY

unlabelledView post →(taps mic) BEN-HUR is the ultimate bait and switch because they promise chariot races and deliver... in the middle of the film. And then the rest is a sermon with no chariots at all and that is why it ultimately fails and nobody remembers the third act.
unlabelledView post →Yes, he won Oscars for Mister Roberts and Save The Tiger and is magnificent in The Apartment but this film and this scene is obviously the apotheosis of Jack Lemmon whose centenary it is today. (He lost the Oscar that year to Charlton Heston in Get Hur, sorry Ben Hur.) youtu.be/8-n-ybKQ_X0?...
unlabelledView post →Beefcake shot of Francis X Bushman, who was among the first wave of film stars, lost it when his adultery was revealed, got it back for Ben-Hur, lost it again when he took the production hostage, got it back as a character actor and remained active until his death

unlabelledView post →Well, the worlds first movie remake was by Melies in 1896. It was a remake of Louis Lumière's PLAYING CARDS. The first real narrative remake was THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY in 1904. And Hollywood has been remaking films ever since. The Wizard of Oz, Ben Hur, Scarface, and The Thing were all remakes.
unlabelledView post →Surprised no one has mentioned Borges, who was so good and such a godfather to many writers that his politics are barely ever mentioned. But beyond that, Charlton Heston. Put on Ben-Hur on a flight recently, and what a movie and performance.

unlabelledView post →Here's my absolutely massive BEN-HUR review, if you're interested, in which I go into the production's false starts, Mussolini, Greta Garbo, Ramon Novarro going AWOL, and the race to finish the money pit, plus a point-by-point comparison to the 1959 version moviessilently.com/2015/08/30/b...

unlabelledView post →Ben Hur….they hurt a lot of horses making that goofy movie and all those old time films where you see a horse go down, they used wires to trip the horses so they would fall. Thankfully, animal protectors like myself fought for animal rights in that industry too.
unlabelledView post →I’m watching Ben Hur, kinda hard to believe but that guy will eventually fly in space and fight apes. He was also in a film about horrible green food.
unlabelledView post →Actual sentence I just heard: "Was filming Ben-Hur in 2.76:1 the right choice? It makes the movie practically unwatchable on a phone or a laptop"
unlabelledView post →I finally watched all of BEN-HUR and boy, that chariot race sure was something. “But what did you think of the REST of the movie, Bibbs…?” Yup… that chariot race sure was something…

unlabelledView post →Dad hated the cinema ("the last film I watched was Ben Hur and I hated it") but something convinced him to take a 6 year old me to see Star Wars in the opening week. Imagine your first experience of the big screen being that Star Destroyer booming overhead. The love affair with film started there.

unlabelledView post →A #BlueskyLullaby for tonight: Miklós Rózsa is most remembered for scoring movies like 'Ben-Hur.' (In 1946, when he won an Oscar for 'Spellbound,' he also had two other movie scores nominated.) But here's non-movie music of his: the second movement of his Sonata for Two Violins. See you around.

unlabelledView post →I have the one from yts. Stats are - 1920x696 - 24 fps frame rate - 2248 kbps data rate - 2632 kbps total bitrate It looks like they just went with an unusual aspect ratio to artificially make it seem “even more widescreen”, which isn’t unheard of. Lawrence of Arabia was 2.20:1 or 2.35:1 depending on 70mm vs 35mm. If you look at [this cheat sheet](https://quickref.me/aspect-ratio.html), 2.20:1 isn’t even on there, and 2.35:1 is an oddball 1920x817. So, could be normal, or maybe not.…

unlabelledView post →I don't usually post a #LastFourWatched if I didn't watch at least 4 movies in a week but this one feels like an accomplishment because I spent like 3 evenings working my way through BEN-HUR (1959, dir. William Wyler) #LastFourFriday #LetterboxdFriday Then I watched a bunch of "Reacher"
unlabelledView post →This sent me down a rabbit hole about the religious affiliations of the creators of biblical film adaptations, which is how I found out the director of Ben-Hur was Jewish.
unlabelledView post →You mean the Bob Fosse movie is the best one? The one with music and lyrics by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields? And the cinematographer of Ben-Hur and The Graduate? Gosh how unexpected that’s the one that would become an immediate favorite.
unlabelledView post →BEN-HUR is on and I gotta say I love a movie with a long shelf life and strong verticals.

unlabelledView post →Obviously many have observed this before, but one really striking thing about the chariot race from BEN-HUR is that, in a film with near-incessant music, there is not a note played throughout the sequence. Not even when the villain gets fatally trampled.
unlabelledView post →This is one of the iconic opening shots in film, and one of the most memorable scenes, period. It's up there with the chariot scene in BEN-HUR (59), and the crop duster scene in NORTH BY NORTHWEST (59.) #TCMParty #TheSoundOfMusic #SummerUnderTheStars
unlabelledView post →It plays out more like the 1959 film Ben-Hur which is another great film with very little to do with reality.

unlabelledView post →And it becomes more interesting if you know anything about film, like, Episode 1 is at least 33% an excuse to do Ben-Hur with jet engines. How many blockbuster franchises offer you that opportunity?
