I've ridden with this series for a long time (it's actually the eighth edition of the game), and I write this from the perspective of a coach mode player who also likes to spectate other games his team is not involved in. It is hard to write this review, but I feel I need to be honest and say it like it is. While it may feel pretty good to start, things start to creep in and become more and more noticeable as time progresses.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I lover this game especially the franchise mode Its way better and easier to use then Madden especially if you prefer coaching or spectating. Since I have limited mobility in one of my hands the ability to coach with just using a mouse makes it so much easier for me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I rarely make reviews but as someone who plugs a ton of time into min-maxing Madden and trying to play as authentic a game as possible I thought I'd give my two cents. I don't have much interest in talking at length about what's good about this game because to be brutally honest it's just a worse version of Madden. That being said, supporting a Madden competitor that actually tries to improve is a good idea. These are the issues you will face if you are a player like me. These issues make it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR; A good alternative to Madden for a fraction of the price. If you’re looking to scratch the itch for a football simulation this game is good but if you’re not into coach mode you’ll find the gameplay unsatisfying. I'll continue to follow this game and play it regularly to see what's updated but here are my initial thoughts after 4 hours of play. I recently picked this game up because I didn’t want to buy another Madden game. I’m a passionate football fan and like many who have picked up…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For a gamer who likes coach mode best, one who likes to call the plays and watch the action unfold, Axis Football 2023 is the best beer and pretzel football simulation to come along since Sierra’s Front Page Sports Football Pro 98. I can’t speak to the twitch gaming mode, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed playing Axis Football 2023 while coaching a franchise team. Positives: The developers improve the game with updates, and fix bugs. So many variables that game play does not become repetitive.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Look, Madden it isn't. That's both good and bad. It's bad in that if you're looking for polished graphics and animations, deep modes and 4K quality NFL uniforms, you will be sorely disappointed. It's good in that unlike some other companies, Axis Football really cares about their product and listens to feedback. And there are NFL mods out there anyway, proving that NFL licenses are really overrated these days. Overall both this and Madden have plusses and minuses, but I tell you every single…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This captures the spirit of Front Page Sports by Sierra Online in the 1990s. Create your own league apart from the NFL or NCAA with your imagination. Is gameplay perfect? No. But if you've ever wanted to create your own alternative to the NFL or NCAA, this is a great title.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've tried Madden 22 and 23.. this is better. Having said that I'm not sure that's much praise but this it the one I've put more hours into that any other football game because it tries to do it's job without throwing garbage ads and useless crap at you the whole time you're playing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a difficult game to rate or recommend. On one hand, for a small studio this is an incredible feat. A small studio has essentially re-created Madden. On the other hand, they've recreated Madden... It has all the same problems - Its animation based: players suction into other players, one animation overrides another at the expense of any logic, defending a pass is ridiculous, a 200 lb RB can stand up a blitzing 400lb nose tackle, my blitzing defensive end spins around and gets sucked…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Axis Football 2023 has made some great improvements over the years and it is starting to shape up nicely. Game play has improved, but it still has room to grow and mature. I really appreciate the effort the Dev put into this years product. The NFL mods are great and I really appreciate the great community helping support this game. I cant stand the Madden series anymore and the lack of effort from EA. Axis Football 23 is not perfect, but it is an enjoyable game and I appreciate what the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Updated for v3.0 inside runs are still a problem. A FB will always try to bounce the run outside on 3rd and 1. Better here. Blitzing has been toned down, maybe too far but it was out of control. Better here. Punt returns go to far. Around every 3rd or 4th one I have is a TD, but better than in v2.,1. Switching defensive formation (for example from a 4:3 to a 4:4 or a 5:3 to put more meat in the box does not work right since the new "big guy" isn't the right position. On my team it ends up…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the franchise mode of this game. With the franchise mode, you can play, coach, spectate, or simulate the games. You can choose how long the quarters will be and even the weather conditions. I enjoy coaching so that I can call the plays and adjust the depth charts throughout the game. My biggest complaint is that a "save as" option isn't available, so that I could revisit a strong roster again in the future.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought it on sale to support the dev team, as I refuse to give EA any more money. Not much to say, it's a fun game. But I strongly suggest people don't compare to Madden. There's still a long, long, ways to go. I appreciate all the effort the team puts in, and they answer fan questions / complaints the best they can. Good luck guys!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I believe this is my first Steam review. I'll keep it short as I'm old and short on patience. But that won't keep me from telling you that this is a good football game. Over the years, well decades actually, I've played lots of football sims on PC and this one stands amongst the best. Is it the best? No, but if it keeps improving it might get there. The production values are not on par with a AAA game like Madden, but they are good enough now, especially with the new physics-based animations.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Works great on the steam deck. Amazing game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Like every football game I've ever played, this has some gameplay issues, but it reminds me a lot of the old Front Page Sports franchise. Highly customizable, salary cap and money management, weekly practice focus... a lot of time and energy has gone into it. I hope the franchise continues to progress.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ignore my time played, I rarely run it through steam. This game isn't the other football game. The graphics aren't as good, physics may be a bit dated in comparison, but it runs well, you can mod it to hell and back, run a PROPER franchise. It's got a little Jank and thats ok because it reminds me of the last best Madden game which was 08. HIGHLY recommend if you enjoy american football, and are tired of EA's nonsense
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game. I really did. The creation possibilities are awesome... but the gameplay is awful. Terribly clunky controls, pass coverage is non-existent. I know they don't have Madden's budget, but I was very disappointed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stats feel like they don't matter, especially in discipline Can have 99 discipline put on all your players and you will get 6-7 penalties a game, while AI will barely ever even get a single penalty in a game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I finally said I would give you guys a shot because at this point I said there is no way you guys can be worse than madden or their franchise mode. And dammit you guys are already (after playing 4 hours) my new favorites. I definitely agree with there needing to be more commentary added, maybe a halftime report? although that isn't priority. I would definitely say maybe next year could we see about the ability for press conference, or hell even a news feed. I know you guys have little to work…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay has improved since 2015, but it's still bad. Gameplay: The QB's throws are aproximate and the receptions sometimes seem very easy and without defender but still miss. Contact is still catastrophic and player movements are more fluid, but it's still bad. There are very few options on offense and only classic schemes, and on defense it's even worse. The blitz compo with 7 players against 4 can be blocked, a QB can never have so much time to throw on a blitz, it's not possible. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →keeps crashing after about 4 or 5 seasons and i have to start from the beginning. I get Simulation Matches that fail to progress to the game. I end up losing the entire franchise because of this. I put too many hours into developing a team for this to occur. Get this bug fixed or I am not buying Axis 2024. I decided ti uninstall and reinstall. I am only playing one team and after 3 seasons the draft has locked. I cant get past it to start a season. This is ridiculous.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would highly recommend Axis '23 to any football fan who wants control over the game instead of having the developer decide for you how you should play. I abandoned Madden because they killed franchises and modding unless players were willing to play online -- which I don't want to do. The quality here has vastly improved over the years. No, it's not perfect, but neither was Madden after 8 years of development. Madden players cry about what EA Sports keeps doing, so...if we want an alternative…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Massive customization" my ass. I've played a lot of games that let you customize things. This one is pretty weak to be making that statement. It actually feels like massive restrictions. There's no free design. It's all preset. You can't paint. You can't upload your own logos. You pick everything from a list and, as you would expect, they are not the greatest. The gameplay is so-so. I get the feel of some of the old football video games from 2000-2010 - which isn't necessarily a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I simply cannot get my Xbox controller to work with this game. It's worked with past versions, but not this one. It accepts when I hit 'A' to enter the game, but once I get to the menu I can't do anything. Ordinarily I'd say, OK, that's just me or something with my setup. But if you go to the forum you'll see that controller issues seem to be quite a problem with this release.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Better than Madden, fight me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This leaves a lot to be desired. Still great compared to Madden, but the flaws make this game borderline unplayable and frustrating. I find myself being automatically moved offside and automatic penalties are waaaay to frequent. Also pass interference just doesn't exist I guess? 0 user control for defense on WRs. You can switch and try to intercept but 1) rarely any players except AI can even get the ball in their hands and 2) Your guy will just go through/behind while covering. Manual defense…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've had the game for a while, but as you may see, I haven't been able to muster up that much time into it because it's just not a very fun experience unfortunately. I really feel like these smaller studios need to stop trying to make the next Madden. I haven't truly enjoyed Madden in years, but it takes A LOT of devs and resources to make that style of football gaming even remotely enjoyable and functional. I think it would be a benefit to both the devs and consumers if they'd focus more on…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They put ads in this game now lmfao
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's come a long way since I first bought it in 2017! Plus, if you're not a Madden fan boi, this dev team needs to be supported. All the expected modes are there, including Franchise. Also a bonus that they support Linux / Steam Deck out of the box.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing customization, deeper franchise option than anything else I've played. But awful gameplay. Like unplayable awful. Announcers feel like what a bot would say after watching 1000 games. The crowd is there, but there is no gameday atmosphere. Lots of potential for the future, but nothing to really keep me coming back now. I know it's a small dev team, or just one person, but I can't find enough to justify buying this game year after year without major gameplay improvements.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted this game to be good. Instead, it is frustrating. First, I just want to coach. I can't speak for aspects of the game not included in coaching. This game reminds me of the magnetic vibrating football of ages ago. It's every bit as smart. And does the same exact things. The kick returner will get caught behind the blockers instead of running around. If your quarterback has to scramble, he may just run into the line and run in place until he is tackled. Kick returners…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →[URL=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/32985364/] If you enjoyed this review please click the link and then click follow on my curator page. Axis Football 2023 is a major step in the right direction. There are hundreds of new animations that make tackling, receiving, and running more fluid. It isn't on the level of Madden, but it is a fun game that does many things that football gamers want. The developer is very responsive and looks to adjust or fix any issue that pops up. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really gives me NFL 2K vibes from my childhood.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i played 1 hour and that's all i needed. The hit/break tackle/catch mechanics although looking sleeker don't actually help the gameplay if anything makes it worse. Some how the computer is always better then you... making plays that are just impossible or had the exact same elements of the play that you just performed but it actually works for the computer. If you get tackled no matter were you get tackled it will always be were the balls lands after play not were the player was tackled. I get…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The dev pours so much love into these games you can see the improvement every year. I really wish we could get something similar with a basketball game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay is whack. Passes going in places that don't make sense, missed tackles that don't make sense, computers never fumble the ball but your team does, just very janky and uneven. I like a lot of the aspects of this game (franchise mode is cool), but the gameplay and braindead CPUs don't do this game any favors. Stiill better than Madden though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I’m in a sports mood, I tried out #AxisFootball2023 for #NintendoSwitch. Honestly? Not bad, if you just want a PS2-style, slightly arcadey experience. Like Madden before microtransactions, which is not a bad thing at all. No NFL license, but lets you make your own teams. I should see if it’ll let me make a #GrandRapids team.
unlabelledView post →Having played about half a game, it looks fine, runs fine, I would probably love it! But... I don't know much about football, and there is no form of explanation for game controls or guides for tactics. I can't blame them for my lack of knowledge, but I don't think I can cut my football teeth on this game. If I was smarter I would probably love it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall I'd say it's worth it for the money, but it has its flaws. The AI has two noticeable issues worth mentioning: only one player can attempt a tackle at a time, so every other defensive player just stops when someone is attempting a tackle (this usually doesn't make a difference on the outcome of the play as it turns out), and pathfinding can be strange at times. For example, a running back will cut inside his blockers while doing an outside run and get far fewer yards than he could have,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game solely as a Front Office Management simulation. And, after 59 hours of game time, I am not a fan. Madden '07 has a more robust Off-Season. During a season, I am constantly fighting the computer overriding my choices of players for the starting line-up. With one team, it was impossible to change their playbook, as I was stuck playing a 3-4 defensive alignment, no matter how many times I changed it. And, every single season I played, I would have an Offensive Lineman…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played virtually every American Football game available on Steam & generally they were all terrible. I knew within 5 minutes I wanted a refund. This game isn't terrible. It's just plain bad, underwhelming & disheartening. I'm not gonna ask for a refund of this game since apparently it's the best non-Madden PC football game, but that's damning it with faint praise. The best thing I can say about it is that they got Jay Styne to play Dave (Dan) Stevens on commentary, but that highlighted…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →people say madden is better but this is much better in my opinion because you can make your own team and the controlls arent weird
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Axis Football 2023 is quite a divisive, polarizing game within the football game community and I can see why. This game has its flaws, and a lot of them are inherent and self-explanatory. I will get into some of those, and why I would still recommend this game for any football fan out there. Let's begin. It's always nice to get the vegetables devoured so we can get to the dessert, so let's talk about some of the negative aspects of the game. Firstly, this game runs poorly and looks quite…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, this game is good. Its literally the best alternative to Madden. However, it needs work. There are still glitches that need to be addressed, and the animation/graphics aren't the best. Overall, 7.5/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can definitely see the improvement over the last several years with animations and gameplay. Great to see that the patch has shut down easy deep passes for the user and I like seeing the inaccuracies at times of the qbs. Keep pushing Axis Games. and Ill keep supporting!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I play coach mode and this game is the best coach mode game out. Franchise is deep. Customization is very open with pre-made team colors for modding teams. Hasn't crashed yet!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Axis Football is currently the BEST simulation football game option that we have available. Endless customization, deep franchise mode, accurate simulation, and a team that updates the game just about EVERY DAY and LISTENS TO THE FANBASE! Unheard of from the overlords at EA. Give Axis a try. It may not be polished, but it sure is fun and actually feels like football!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is amazing that this game was created by a small group of people, as opposed to Madden with an entire team and far greater assets at their disposal. I say this at the outset, because I will not consider this in the review. When I am deciding where to spend my valuable gaming time, I don't care whether a game was created by a team of legendary programmers or a trained monkey - the only issue is the enjoyment I derive. For those who have seen my reviews of prior versions of this game, the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very good. Better than madden, even if the trailers aren't as flashy. Not AAA polished but it still holds it's own up there with the greats. You wont be disappointed, but if you are, if you have less than two hours you can refund it. 9/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game play is rough. I think it only gets great reviews because people hate madden.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a refreshing change from the Madden franchise hype. Madden was made for gamepad ballers. Axis doesn't require a gamepad to play but is useful. I like the coach mode myself - better to see the mistakes than to create them myself. The playbook is very generic, but enough to run a solid offense. I have yet to play a full season, still trying to learn the playbook.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish listed this for a while but finally craving some football and the Steam Summer Sale made the choice easy. I will happily support an indie studio over anything EA. The quality where it is exceeded expectations and the potential to be a damn great game is there. Personally it felt like a new age Front Page Sports Football game. Creating a team has a ton of options and choices. The franchise mode is where it's at though. Playing English Football type of leagues w/ relegation and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It just isn't fun. I don't know what else to say. I mean, sure, you can mod the thing to have it be NFL teams, but it just doesn't work.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Coach Mode Review With immersion-breaking player teleportation, no replays or even an on-field referee, and choppy commentary, the game lacks presentation, especially in coach mode. There's also the feeling, particularly with passing, that the decision to catch the ball is made before the play even starts, but the routes and animations of the players on the field don't adjust accordingly, resulting in far too many balls being dropped unchallenged or caught in impossible circumstances. All…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I CANNOT! Recommend this game at ALL, Neither can I recommend the madden games. This is just a janky utter glitchy probably worse than madden game I've ever played. I've also played the 2021 version of this game and it's like they changed nor improved upon nothing in this game. PASS not even on sale. It's not worth the frustration and broken controllers.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game play is OK. After a number of seasons I find the AI can be beat rather easily using the same tactics over and over again. The announcers are annoying, thou I have yet to shut them off. The biggest plus, it let's me play football without supporting the NFL. Changes I would like to see: 1) Better AI 2) Ability to edit playbook 3) Extra point kicks from 2 yard line
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As someone who used to buy Gameday every year back on the PS1 this game takes me back to those times. I haven't bought Madden in a few years now due to the poor product EA puts out every year with that series, this game is a great alternative. It obviously doesn't have the NFL/NFLPA licenses but you can mod it if that's a deal breaker for you. I tried this out on a whim and I'm definitely glad I did. The dev is active in the community and the game runs incredibly well on the Steam Deck. If…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Over the years, Madden has gotten very stale for me. Each year, I would purchase the newest version and play a few exhibition games and then start a franchise that I would never finish. I can't remember the last time I actually took a team to the Superbowl. So, I was looking for something a little different to get the fun back into playing football. And I can definitely say.... Axis Football is most certainly NOT it. This game feels like I stepped back in time to the early 2000s because it…
