60 of 193 · most liked firstSo, I started this game a long time ago and I'm a big fan of turn based tactical RPGs, always loved me a good fire emblem game or something similar. And I was like "that's weird I only have like an hour or two in it? I don't remember it being bad." Then I started the game again. The story starts out very interesting, the energy and health system are very cool and after the first tutorial fight I'm excited for the game. Then I hit the first real combat with 6 characters on both sides. I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ash of Gods: Redemption is heavily inspired by The Banner Saga. As a big fan of The Banner Saga, I really wanted to like this game, but even then, I can't recommend it. Let us start with the good aspects: The art is good, even if it does not reach the heights of the artistic visuals of The Banner Saga. The soundtrack is solid. And those are the good things about Ash of Gods. Now we come to the bad parts of the game, which outweigh the good by far. The turn based combat is mediocre. Not the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Combat sucks bad. Theres no point in bringing weak teammates, they just make the combat worse. The attacks alternate between sides. So if they have 6 characters and you have 1, your one character gets 6 attacks per turn. But if its an even 6v6 then each of your characters gets a turn. Its dumb af. The story is nice and the game could have been good. But that killed it for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wish there was a neutral review option. The game is quite good, i liked the characters and the depth of the worldbuilding. But the storytelling is terrible. It's just outright incompetent. The game feels like i skipped the first part and started playing part 2. It doesn't explain the world enough. It doesn't give you enough context and enough information. You have to make decisions while being absolutely uninformed about what's going on. Some decisions play out without you even realizing you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game was nice. I like the characters and the story. The overall feeling was good. The battle system is nice. Sometimes, I have a nice time, using my abilities cleverly to build a nice strategy to attack priority targets and protect my people. The normal "feel good" moment in a turn-based RPG. But at other time, It's also quite forgiving with the wound system. But... ...the story has fingers dressed in the sky towards the player just for the sake of it. "Oh, you didn't do that choice 6…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Look, I got this a while ago and bounced right off of it. When I saw that it was majorly updated, I checked it out again. The update is a huge improvement to the actual combat and gameplay. I've had fun playing through the fights. The art and animations are great. HOWEVER, I'm 50 years old. I have been a gamer for a very long time. This has to be the most poorly written game I have played. Sometimes it makes sense. Most often it does not. Interacting with NPCs is completely…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A lot of reading at best medicore story. Fights make no sense. Most of abilities cost health to use, so basicly to atack enemy first you thrust knife in your back first and then damage enemy. Next round your character die to enemy attack. This solution would be fine for one or two characters ( let's say berserker ) but this is mechanic for every single character. I tried to like it. I have spent 10h trying to like it. Just can't. Nice drawn graphics though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really, really thought I would like this game, but unfortunately I wasn't able to power through it. The good: The characters, the story, the artwork, the character designs, the general gameplay and combat. The bad: The strix system. In order to survive, you need strixes, which are items you can collect by exploring the world, killing things, etc. You can make choices while traveling that will effect your strix amount. The problem is-- I found that you need to be VERY STRICT with your strixs…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a HUGE improvement. The major update has turned this into such a good tactical combat game. I went from 5 hours played with multiple restarts and frustration to nearly 15 hours played nonstop. It was hard to stop playing long enough to type this review. Really nice job devs.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cheap copy of the banner saga. Play the original and not this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an undeniably controversial game, and understandably so, but after finishing it, I choose to place myself on the positive side. The time I saw the trailer, I was kinda sold on the spot. I love the game's completely original aesthetic and world-building. This originality and weirdness is retained during the whole game, with the story, characters and game mechanics retaining their mystery. This game tries to do so many different things at the same time and this might keep you wandering…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has bugs. Ok, first, the obvious one, this is a Banner Saga (BS) knockoff. BUT, BS is a GREAT game, I love it, if it would be a decent knockoff, that would be strange, but still great. It is not. Art, straight out from BS, great, beautiful. But character design ... similar, yet I miss colours. Animations, beautifull, yet rare and everything lacks the colour palet from BS. Dialogues are reasonable, but everytime someone else says something, they grunt, and it gets annoying REALLY…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Although I'd probably recommend you get this game on sale, the team that have picked it up have done a great job making much more enjoyable of an experience, with a completely overhauled combat system. If you liked Banner Saga, think of this game as Banner Saga's little brother. It's rough around the edges, and the translation is clearly rough as well, but its been improved significantly. If it means anything, I played this game once, and quit almost immediately, but more recently I played and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game wants to be the Banner Saga, it wants it so desperately it makes references to it constantly. The problem is it's a lot worse than the Banner Saga. The game-play is worse, the animation is worse and the writing is most definitely worse. On top of it being a bit weirdly translated. It's not bad, but the game itself is looking to be compared to the Banner Saga and by god, does it fall leagues short of that. And the similarities don't save it. If anything they make it worse. All in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay is absolute garbage. When the never ending booring dialouge with no voice acting or animation ends and combat finally starts the requirement of using any skill other than the basic attack is spontaneous combustion. I am not even joking. For a skill that basicaly does 24dmg to the enemy you will need to pay 18 health and it makes 0 sense to use most skills at all. And the turn base mechanic is absolutely garbage aswell. Each team gets a turn not each character soo if you have 10…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible encounter design, on normal difficulty I have to replay each fight 3-4 times just to get a somewhat decent outcome. Not going to spoil anything, but you will often be put into situations where you are at a severe disadvantage in combat, and there's obviously one solution you're supposed to take, as devised by designers, but the game doesn't hint at what those solutions could be. So trial and error is the name of the game. Personally, I don't enjoy such gameplay, but you do you.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game interesting world and actually not just a banner saga rip off even if it looks like it but the biggest issue I have with this game is it is so stupidly hard, no like dark souls hard where i have to improve and learn to win no its more like everything is stacked against you no matter how well you play and you cant really do anything about it. For example theres a boss fight early on where its your 1 guy vs 6 and ones a boss. I have yet to see anyone EVER beat this fight without doing…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →That's my second playthrough of the game. I wanted to refresh my memories before the upcoming release of Ash of Gods: The Way and finally decided to leave a review. The very first time I played it offline mostly, so the real hours on the record should be about 20-25, I guess. I can say I enjoyed it but to be completely honest the game is very flawed. First of all, it's merciless to new players in terms of lore. I am 5 minutes in the game and I was overwhelmed with a number of words and names…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →PSA: I am giving "not recommended" due to ending (and bugs), so if you don't mind it, or get lucky, consider it recommended. Game has some great mechanics, I loved combat, I (mostly) mostly loved story, different protagonists having different personalities and stories was great... But! "If a bird flies north, a worm is in the ground", "If you jump high, rabbit sleeps in forest". Do those mean anything? Exactly, no. Those are not actual ingame quotes, but they as well might be. Every.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disappointed is the word I'd use to describe my feeling playing this game, and the best way I can describe this game is it's a pizza cutter; all edge and no point. It has a beautiful art style reminiscent of Banner Saga, but that's honestly the best thing going for it. The combat lacks the depth of strategy in that series, and feels very unrewarding and clunky. the characters are needlessly edgy and trying too hard to be "cool", or at least what someone might find cool. I think I've seen…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a serious mixed bag. Perhaps the best way to approach this is to compare it to its predecessor, The Banner Saga. Then I'll go into Pros and Cons. Gameplay Overall, the gameplay is better than Banner Saga. Combat is better. The addition of magic cards adds some flexibility to gameplay. There is also a greater variety of characters to use. Banner Saga discouraged the player from taking out one enemy at a time because the remaining enemies would get more turns, and this game has…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are several reviews on this title that I empathize with strongly. Banner Saga was a game that was very rough, but felt sort of manageable in that 'all choices are tough choices' sort of way. Good story, good art, etc. This game is the genetic sibling of that with a very similar style and play. In some ways, its a step up. I liked the premise of the new story. But that's basically where my enjoyment ends. The translation errors are plentiful, and at least for me, left me with a shaky…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The music is good, the world building is interesting. The story on the other hand is confusing, bit boring but passable and over the top gruesome. But the combat is chess. It is not tactical in a way i expected. You cannot customise and experiment with different play styles because only one solution is correct, like a puzzle. And also abilities and upgrades (and the whole combat system) are confusing and underwhelming, gets repetitive and boring fast. I mean why do archer looses hp to attack…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you can see the game for what it is, and not for what you want it to be, buy it, 100%. Now, what IS Ash of Gods: A bloody, text filled, narrative focused game. The story is truly unique, your choices have immediate and future impact, the characters are actually interesting B U T, and I really mean this, it is UNFAIR. I don't try to say the game is hard, no, I mean UNFAIR. When you first start the game it will ask you to choose a dificulty, I think until diff. 3 the enemies can't use cards,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The strategic depth of the game is not too deep. After you get the hang of the fight, you will identify a few patterns. Unlike most RPG's, there are 3 independent POV characters and you switch between them, The plot is pretty good. If you like a good story with decent world building, you should try this. Also, choices do matter. Be kind to your characters or they hurt themselves in unexpected ways.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's surprising that the developers decided to polish the gameplay. It's confusing that they decided to do this seven years after its release. It's nice anyway
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game starts well, teases a good story, but they failed to tie up all the plot threads at the end. Conclusion was distinctly unsatisfying. Characters are developed, conflicts established, then get utterly ignored in the final chapters. Does not live up to the legacy of Banner Saga. Not even close.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Divisive masterpiece. Give it some thought. It is a combination of visual 'choose your own adventure' novel, light RPG character development and very novel turn-based tactical combat. Very, very heavy on theme and story thanks to being based, similar to the Witcher, on an actual fantasy novel. The source material is only available in Russian, but the inspiration shines through in a game that is very, very rich in world building and characters with long histories. Biggest highlights? 1.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't recommend this game in it's current state. Like others have said, the dialogue is poorly translated and as such lacks impact and direction. After reading a few sentences you quickly realise this game was written by someone who has studied ESL but isn't a native speaker. Honestly, the entire script should be redone. It's terrible. The gameplay is OK as far as tactical turn-based games go. Not bad but not great either. Others have pointed out that the less enemies there are, the more…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It just tries way too hard. That and there is little to no set-up for the setting. At one point in Chapter 2 or 3, there's a paragraph that references like five different factions in the same breath, and 3 of them you haven't even heard of before. Its anecdotal and specific but its a great example of how they do a very, very poor job of introducing their admittedly cool world. I wish they did better. The translations suck, the card system is useless, and every single battle feels like you're…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fascinating narrative and world, cool gameplay, developer is still supporting the game and pushing updates.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You look at the art style and combat and think: How can this game be bad? It's just boring. The story is simply badly written - it always mentioning character names, places and is full of unnecessary filler dialogue. I played Pillars of Eternity games and am used to walls of texts, but here none if it make sense. The characters reactions often feel out of place, dialogue is written in a confusing matter and hard to follow. The combat is fine, but not very deep or challenging. A few fights…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The comparisons to the Banner Saga are definitely justified and as someone who loved the Banner Saga I can confidently say I really liked this game as well. The world ending premise and the lore in AOG is in my opinion even better than the Banner Saga. However, AOG is definitely Janky. The Banner Saga is much more polished, has better combat and while i do prefer the world ending premise in AOG I still think the story in the Banner Saga is better. The combat is very average in AOG and the game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →ooof! feels like a soulless copy+paste of Banner Saga... I really tried to get past that, but the writing is uninspiring.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Takes RNG to a whole new level in this thrilling adventure of constant uncertainty as to whether the game will delete your save files on a whim. If the *challenging* attrition of Strixes doesn't stop you, the broken bug filled five year-old game will. If you're going to plagiarise an entire IP (and get away with it only by the mercy and pardoning kindness of Stoic Studio), at least be a smooth criminal and have it run properly.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →whoever designed a combat system that uses your own health to do anything more than a basic attack should be given props for creating a challenging system....and then thrown out the window for the audacity
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, this is one of those odd titles. The story is really interesting, the combat is challenging but fair, the art work is gorgeous.... but for some reason after putting the game down, I had absolutely no desire whatsoever to start it back up. Maybe it's just that this isn't really my type of game. If the turned based combat game is your preferred genre, you'll probably love this. I can't personally recommend it, but I'm still rating it as an 8/10.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really liked this one. Especially the story. I think I rather prefer it to Banner Saga. I completed the game on another platform, but felt like getting a Steam copy for collection too.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game answers the question "what if Banner Saga was bad?" World-building that inspires curiosity and awe? Replaced by badly-translated edgelord-y, sprinkled with some of the most generic fantasy kingdoms ever put to pixel. Fun, distinct characters? Also not found in this game - but what you get is a collection of dinguses who flipflop over their views whenever they have free time from not understanding what's happening. Moral ambiguity? Just like in any other game that claims to have it -…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is a lot of fun now, the changes they made really improved it in many ways. Its great they took the tme and effort to do this, worth supporting for that imo.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a full review since I couldn't play it much. Endless dialogue which constantly pans viewpoints between the same 2 characters. It gave me motion sickness. Combat animations are real slow - do yourselves a favor and go into options and immediately kick that up to 3x. The narrator and the subtitles don't match, which is a small peeve for a normal game, but this game felt like 80% text scrawl.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Ash of Gods: Redemption" is a buggy game to the point where the story breaks down and loses its meaning. It's really disappointing to have spent time on it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's Pretty Fun - Interesting Story, Tile Based Combat, Multiple Endings, If A Character Dies It Changes The Story, Good Music, RPG Style Character Level Ups (More Dmg, More HP, Etc) "Choose Your Own Adventure" Style Gameplay. I Didn't Expect Too Much From This Game, But Yeah, It Was Pretty Fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The translation of text was so bad that the game's story made no sense. Impossible to care about, and has a really stupid targeting system.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. I have seen comments complaining about the translation, about the turn-based combat and about the travel-segments of the game. They made me wary of buying this game but I decided to give it a try anyway. - I did notice a couple of minor typos in English here and there but nothing beyond that. The story hooked me in, the characters are interesting and the worldbuilding is alright. - The combat is better than the Banner's Saga to me (and I love the Banner Saga, which is why I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gave it 4 hours, just... not a compelling story, the gameplay is fine, but this is for the most part a VN...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game throws you in the middle of a fantasy world and doesn't do a good job of explaining the lore through the story so some homework is required to figure out who/what/where all the people/places/events it's referring to are. But once you know how the world fits together the story becomes fun and engaging.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely phenomenal story, gameplay, art style, music. Clearly a spiritual successor to Banner Saga. It even references it at multiple points. The story started off a bit edgy and it was hard to get attached to the characters, but as the game progressed I was absolutely gripped. It seems like there's a lot of possibility for things to happen. This is one of the few games where I wasn't always sure what the right option was, much like Banner Saga. That being said, I have a couple…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed this game very much, despite it problems. Characters are interesting and their story is well told, world is new and interesting and I liked rotoscoping animation. Difficulty is all over the place, which is probably my biggest issue with this game. On higher difficulty level battles very from extremely easy to literally impossible (at least that is my experience, maybe I just suck at the game). I have seen there was a balance update so I'll probably give it another go and see if that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For a game to get a second life is rare. For a game that gets a second life that has a great amount of excellent work put into it is unbelievable! Thanks to the current team for making the game extremely enjoyable to play and worth every penny.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was really excited to play a turn based story game with this aesthetic, but an hour in I'm giving up. The story is an interesting fight for survival, but every dialogue is so wordy that it loses all appeal. The first introduction into the party mechanics was telling me I needed two teams to battle to a gate, and another for a distraction. I got plopped right into a fight with half the people I should've brought with no mention of the distraction again.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Similar to "The Banner Saga", but lower your expectations. It has a nice story and gameplay, but some fights can piss you off.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game us fun, and visuals are wonderful, but every crash makes me regret buying it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Broken, not fun, not recommending it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can definitely see why some people dislike this game, but overall I think the good outweighs the bad. It can be unforgiving at times, but that just raises the stakes in my opinion. My only real gripe is the inconsistent auto-saving. The game seemingly saves after every small dialogue interaction but not after many of the difficult battles, which is very frustrating. That said, if you simply check the save file before quitting the game, you should be fine.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →played for 30minutes, first actual battle at the gate of the town your trying to escape and my daughter died on second sound and I immediately exited the game. I enjoy a challenge don't get me wrong, but this game isn't a challenge. It's just what happens when a developer wants to be as edgy as humanly possible in every way and creates a game, then they made a combat system that gives the illusion of being "strategic" and/or "in depth/challenging" while in reality it's just a very bland,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game came out on PS4, XboxOne and Switch, yet somehow the PC Version does not have controller support?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →7/10 - Good, exciting story and cool turn-based combat. Personally, there’s a bit too much reading for my taste, and the German translation could definitely be better in some parts.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First off the art is amazing, the reason i picked up this game. The game plays itself. it auto battles from the start and i am currently on my way to beating the game without playing any of the battles. i pick my upgrades but really its more of a choose your own adventure book with good art.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game did not save my progress after the first battle once you have access to the global map. I saw the saving icon. I have only one save (since playing on hard mode)
