Shame about the O'Neil's tho • Afire - Wow, this one cut deep. A new favorite. • Crossing Delancey - Cute, very 80s NY Jewish romcom. Shrug.

This one about an insecure young writer trying to write his follow-up in a remote cottage. Really good, unexpected - a thumbs up from me. homecinema.curzon.com/film/afire/

unlabelledView post →Afire (Petzold; 2023); friendly meal that goes awry might be the scene of the year. A great film about solipsism. 🎥
unlabelledView post →Afire (2023) Christian Petzold (director) The second of Petzold's element series, after his water nymph film Undine (2020). Bought it straight away because I like everything of his that I've been able to find. 📽 #CriterionCollection #JanusContemporaries
unlabelledView post →Afire is great. My one note is Leon should've been named Joe. And the movie should've been named Mopey Joe. But seriously, not seen Petzold play with comedy like this before. The spirit of Rohmer lives: a tale of a writer living a story but being too distracted to see it.
unlabelledView post →AFIRE: Quite possibly the most relatable film about a writer going on vacation one ever seen. As per usual with Petzold, the power is derived from the most minute gestures. Schubert excels with a difficult part, Beer characteristically radiant. “In my mind. In my mind.”

unlabelledView post →watched Petzold’s AFIRE (ROTER HIMMEL in german, a much better title). for the first hour, it feels like Petzold trying his hand at a Maren Ade film. Curious, fun, good even. the last act though delivers with a vengeance. takes the film to a whole another level.
unlabelledView post →Likers of Petzold's Afire will like Sarajevo Film Festival winner Everytime. I thought it was too much strewn with metaphor, I wish Wollner had stuck with one and carried it through. Pretty pictures tho.
unlabelledView post →I just watched Afire ("Roter Himmel," 2023), a German #drama about a self-absorbed writer struggling with both his manuscript and the people around him. It's an interesting film, and definitely one that some of you #writers out there will appreciate... 🖋️ #Filmsky #Moviesky #Writesky 📽️

Tom Petty's Walls aptly describes the heart of the film, the walls we put up to protect ourselves. If we're lucky, someone will see through the cracks in those walls, and maybe even take them down.

unlabelledView post →The best new movie this week is "Afire," a sly comedy-drama from Christian Petzold ("Transit," "Undine") starring his go-to leading lady, Paula Beer — who twists the "manic pixie dream girl" conventions into something sensible and amazing. (Broadway.) 2/4
unlabelledView post →christian petzold’s AFIRE (2023) is maybe the first film to bravely ask, “what if there was a writer guy who was a loser?” fortunately for all of us in the audience, the answer is that he’d have a hot gf. 7/10

unlabelledView post →I haven't seen a Petzold film in theaters since PHOENIX (which is still an ending I can't shake), so I was elated to catch his latest, AFIRE, at the local theater in Victoria. Another remarkable film from one of the most dependable directors working today.
unlabelledView post →Rewatched Petzold's PHOENIX last night. Between that, AFIRE, UNDINE, and TRANSIT, dude really knows how to end a movie. Love his work with Franz Rogowski and Paula Beer, but it might be time to put the two of them in a film with Nina Hoss as well. Avengers-style team up of Petzold's greats.
unlabelledView post →screenshot from Afire by Christian Petzold. Still the best film of the year for me.
unlabelledView post →But an action 🎥 needs action. Afire is the kind of film festival movie I don't get to see much any more, where a dickish male writer mopes about, you're trying to figure out why you shouldn't be rooting for him and there's lots of quiet moments, simple dialogue and you have to unpack it after.
unlabelledView post →Now rewatching a film that I'm glad I caught at Sundance and am looking forward to writing more about next week. After Afire, really liking the trend of movies I'm on about assholes whose stories pull no punches on excavating all their flaws in what is only lightly about their possible redemption 📽️
