unlabelledView post →HELP!--PEDAGOGY! I'm teaching a new lit & film course called "Fictions of Writing and Publishing" about representations of cultural production. Think watching "You've Got Mail" paired with reading Percival Everett & Mona Awad novels. What critical-theoretical lit & film readings would you teach?
unlabelledView post →Im watching You've Got Mail for the first time in years OMG THEYRE HAVING AN AFFAIR???? THATS THE WHOLE MOVIE????
unlabelledView post →I now want to have a Bookstore Romance Day panel discussion with the premise of "You've Got Mail Is Not a Rom-com: It is, at the least, a tragedy. It's possible it's a horror movie." A panel of indie booksellers & authors shooting down every argument for YGM supremacy, one by one.
unlabelledView post →Nora Ephron's complete cluelessness about the internet (which was unintentionally hilarious in You've Got Mail) actually helped the film version, I think. It adds an appealing gauzy naivete. That and licensing Julia Child's memoirs instead of the jarring and odd fan fiction in Julie & Julia.
unlabelledView post →you know what else I hate about the movie You've Got Mail is that Meg Ryan is almost completely in the wrong in the fight she has with Greg Kinnear right before they break up it is ACTUALLY INSANE if her auntie/surrogate mother fell in love with Generalissimo Franco. & she was WRONG not to vote.
unlabelledView post →lol I loved the reference. Do you know that Kate Bush and Prince did a song that starts with the AOL "You've Got Mail" sound? It wasn't inspired by the movie, but I like to imagine it was.

unlabelledView post →Just thinking about when I threw a very thoughtfully-planned You've Got Mail theme party and 2 out of the 30 invited showed up. One had never seen the movie and didn't know why I had a eucalyptus candle going, or daisies, or tall decaf cappuccinos. I was bummer, but I didn't bomb Iran over it.

unlabelledView post →This movie, man. What a beautiful, strange thing. If you didn't see it, thinking it's a wacky You've Got Mail-type romantic comedy, well, you're sorta right. But also NOT right. This is a big piece of *art* that affects me decades later, moreso as friends & I face illness & the end. See this movie.
unlabelledView post →Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail are really the same movie. Change my mind.
unlabelledView post →Sorry Sober Bun. Zodiac was not on Netflix anymore. We're watching 'You've Got Mail' tonight. I know it wasn't an option for school, but it is a great fucking movie. We're welcome.
unlabelledView post →Barnes & Noble is the corporate supervillain in "YOU'VE GOT MAIL," a movie that itself is a reference to a then-omnipresent corporation that no longer exists. War never changes.
unlabelledView post →I rewatched You've Got Mail (1998) probably for the first time since the 90s and it was so fun to see 90s NYC. Also hilarious that Starbucks got such huge placement in the movie. The movie is supposedly about how bad chain superstores are but in reality, ultimately the movie loves them.

unlabelledView post →Add a letter ruin a movie You've Got Mail Because....because they correspond through email you see. It wouldn't work if they were waiting for paper letters in the mail. This is a meta joke. We are laughing.
unlabelledView post →You've Got Mail, 1998, was the last and only movie that made meeting online and dating via DMs seem even slightly romantic.
unlabelledView post →Exceptions noted, I don't connect with Nora Ephron's humor. Yet I've read younger film writers praise her. What am I missing? I try to figure it out after watching YOU'VE GOT MAIL for the first time. wp.me/pzXeC-lAF
unlabelledView post →Not terrible because the leads are charismatic but there's something annoying about a film that wants you to think of You've Got Mail so much that it name checks it and Meg Ryan on separate occasions. Plus tonal imbalance between cartoonish comedic performances and more earnest romantic stuff 🍿
unlabelledView post →Is it time? For my annual rewatch of the greatest movie ever made?? The 1998 romantic comedy masterpiece You've Got Mail ?
unlabelledView post →I had never seen the 1998 film "You've Got Mail" until recently and I don't understand why anyone believes that this movie is romantic; It is a horror film! A woman has her business and life's work destroyed by a manipulative liar, who expects to sleep with her afterward. That's terrifying!

unlabelledView post →Of course, Schlesinger then decided to stick with Everybody's Talkin' anyway, despite Nilsson's new song being lyrically tailored to the content of the film (and also, IMO, a better song). Ah well. It turned up in You've Got Mail instead. Which is not as good a film as Midnight Cowboy.
unlabelledView post →I've been at an all day celebration with old friends, which has been lovely but now I have nothing left in the energy meter. Can't decide which film this evening will soothe me more; Sleepless In Seattle or You've Got Mail.
unlabelledView post →How much of the film "You've Got Mail" would you have to explain to a teen? Instant Message... on AOL... dial-up? Romance through rambling email? Independent bookstore a thriving business? Meg Ryan a bankable star?
